  1. Nope. You can't enforce rules in PvP worlds.
  2. On the tone of more information, could someone please tell us if there is an error message that was spat back at you, or if there was a hs_err_pid_* file somewhere on your machine? Those would REALLY help!
  3. Two or more weeks without an update? Hell, I'd have loved that when I still had the time to play; it'd have meant more time to focus on goals. Anyway, if you really can't wait, go do something constructive away from the computer. The update's not coming any faster if you bellyache about it.
  4. I don't have any programs I don't use regularly, so I don't have anything to clean up. I've set Firefox to clear the cache each time I close it. As for defragging, I haven't defragged my drive in over 5 years, and I don't see any reason to, since I formatted when I installed Vista (About a month and a half ago). Defragmentation actually does a lot for Windows, since the file format is highly prone to fragmentation of files. I won't go through a whole spiel on fragmentation, so I'll give you the quickie version: It's a lot easier to find quarters if they're together than it is if you had to go through the entire penny jar. I would be slightly concerned too, since formatting over a fragmented drive could perhaps lead to problems later. Getting down to the nitty-gritty might be helpful if you wanted to go seriously meticulous in how you managed Java's memory. However, I really doubt that someone wants to think in terms of K instead of M. 524,288K is harder to remember than 512M, and that's tons simpler than 536,870,912. But, at least that jogged my memory too, I forgot completely that I could specify K, and I didn't remember whether or not the grouping symbol was case-sensitive. [Glad to be able to materialize when required. ;)]
  5. That doesn't sound so stupid. People make that mistake all the time. Check to make absolutely sure that it wasn't XP x64 or anything Vista.
  6. I've always been fond of OOo, and this release is no exception. I really like what I see with this. I can't notice much of a speed boost yet, but repeated use will soon prove how fast it is.
  7. Vista's not really so bad if you have a machine that is decent enough to handle it. In short, don't put it on your older PC since it probably can't handle it too well. Yeah, it's a bummer about WinFS, but I think that the reception for Vista would've been much more positive had they held off releasing it when they did, and waited to iron a few more issues out. New Windows 7 kernel sounds promising, too.
  8. Okay... We're looking at needing Clare to get her what-cha-ma-call-it in here. It looks to me like I'm lacking some key piece of info you need for being able to make it stick under Vista. :( ~D. V. "Aww, [bleep]!" Devnull Considering Vista's new user-level privvys, perhaps you need to run it as Administrator? Oh, and when you edit the Java settings, make sure that it looks like "-Xmx***m", where *** is either 128, 256, or 512, in terms of MB of RAM. On the issue of lag, perhaps it might be time to perform housecleaning on your machine, namely defragging, clearing your cache, removing applications you don't use, etc. I believe that the defrag program is still under All Programs - Applications, or you can use the Windows Search bar to find it. Here's a quick synopsis of what the priority levels in an OS mean. ------ The OS cleverly manages the amount of time any one program can have inside of the CPU by specifying priority levels. The rule of priority is simple: the higher the priority, the more CPU time it gets. However, the OS manages this in a manner that best suits the operation of the machine itself, not necessarily to boost any end-user experience (although advanced users can tweak it as such). The one major reason that people don't go around, saying that they should put their own processes at a higher runtime level is because of a simple phenomenon - starvation. Starvation is simply when a process or thread doesn't get adequate CPU time to perform its operations, and if it is a vital process, that can mean terrible, terrible things. Basically, don't go tweaking that stuff, since it can make your system unstable. Let the OS decide which process needs more priority; while a re-niced* process will produce a little bit more speed, it can severely degrade further performance. * Nice is a UNIX term, it basically means the same thing as setting a priority level. Re-nicing is basically resetting a priority level.
  9. In effect, I'd use GRUB too. I believed that the Windows bootloader (which should've worked by default, guess it didn't, big surprise) would be an easier course of action for him. If you really want to test the waters with Linux, Ubuntu is one way to do it. However, since you're used to Windows, Kubuntu might be slightly better suited to your needs (ironically, it's the same OS, different window manager. More on that later). Remember: If you decide to install Linux, it will "own" the master boot partition, which means that it will use GRUB. Of course, GRUB is good at detecting other OSes on the hard disk, so you shouldn't have problems from there. [Just remember to give Linux enough room to play! At least 12GB or so.]
  10. More or less, you're talking about a bootloader - and Windows comes with one right out of the box. Typically, when doing multi-boot setups, the idea is that the primary OS is always installed last. Anyway, Windows should have one, but if it goes right into Vista, you might need to hit F8 before full boot. Of course, you could try GRUB. That's findable online someplace, can't remember the exact location.
  11. If watching television for prolonged amounts of time can damage your eyesight, and if watching a computer screen (any type) for prolonged amounts of time can damage your eyesight, then I don't see how RS can't damage your eyes. Of course, if one plays/uses the computer in moderation, i.e. no more than 4 hours a day, or 24 hours in a week, then the damage would probably be minimal enough to not need glasses.
  12. On the link you provided, it says that the author used Spybot Search & Destroy to remove the spyware, and I'd advise that you do the same.
  13. Couldn't find a server with a decent enough connection. I have been able to get over 7Mbps sustained connection while downloading an ISO...
  14. I looked at the graphics card to see if it was supported to begin with, and of course it was. However, this thread on the RSOF caught my attention. Your best bet would be to post there to see if they can help resolve your issue. Might also want to read the discussion thread for follow-up. While it's occurring primarily in Ireland, ISPs will normally cut bandwidth to users to ensure even distribution.
  15. I don't think that it should be exclusively P2P simply because of how many alternate characters [used to] PK. I'm not rich enough to afford four accounts' membership, AND use them all sufficiently enough to feel I got my moneys' worth, so if PvP worlds was not included in F2P, more or less, I'd be left out of the loop as far as that enjoyment goes. [Pay for four extra characters? Hell, that's about $30/mo for all of my accounts, and I can't afford my main right now. College midterms are a killer.]
  16. I like the cellphone analogy for this. Personally I'm so used to the QWERTY keyboard, I can't type with any indication of speed on a cellphone for any reason. Of course, there are those that have gotten used to it, and know its quirks. Same thing goes for QuickChat -- the more you use it, the more proficient you'll get in it.
  17. I won't look at levels, because someone could have got those in a matter of a year and a half (a-la N0valyfe). I won't look at quest points because people don't always like doing quests. I will happily look at personality, because behind the numbers, digits, and pixels, that's all that counts long after the server's offline.
  18. The only reason that I think camping fails is because it defeats the entire purpose of Slayer. I don't even camp at Abyssals, even though I could, because it gets so damn tedious that I want to move on to something more fun. Otherwise I'd agree with you, as that's how everybody leveled up their skills at one point or another.
  19. The only thing that playing early will achieve is probably bragging rights. That's all a person really cares about, so people usually flaunt that stat like it's something we all have to know.
  20. RuneScape would then become a massive grind-fest, virtually ensuring boredom and disappointment with the game altogether. It would also drop extremely in popularity, as the sheer amount of time required to level up in a handful of areas would be unfathomable.
  21. My guess is that it's using the icedtea-java7 plugin instead of a sun plugin. To begin with, query your java version by typing in terminal: "java -version" If you do not see it say something similar to this: java version "1.6.0_10-rc2" Java SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-rc2-b32) Java HotSpot Server VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode) ...then you're using Icedtea, and you need to get it off quickly. To do that, enter this command. Read it carefully and make sure you're not removing something you might like: sudo apt-get remove gnash gnash-common icedtea-gcjwebplugin libflash-mozplugin libflashsupport mozilla-plugin-gnash openjdk-6-jre openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre-lib swfdec-mozilla && sudo apt-get install alsa-oss faac faad flashplugin-nonfree gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-pitfdll liblame0 non-free-codecs sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin unrar [Source] By the by, I sure hope you're not trying to play HD. That machine looks like it can barely handle the normal version, let alone HD.
  22. If you haven't used any other browser, my advice would be to try using Firefox for this case. If you've been using IE6 for the duration of these glitches, then it might be a good time to switch. I believe you can find your graphics card info if you run dxdiag. Just hit WindowsKey + R and type "dxdiag", and you'll be able to see it on the "display" tab.
  23. System specs and Java version, if you please. Oh, and if you have it, there *might* be a crash log somewhere on your system to the tune of "hs_err_pid_xxxx". If you have that, paste everything after the "SYSTEM" subtitle, which is towards the bottom of the file.
  24. Yep...that's about all you can do at this point. Sure, there are ways to circumvent the netgear firewall, provided that it's not directly hooked up to the Internet, but why should you incur your parent's wrath over some game? Just strike a deal with them. If it doesn't work, then focus on your studies and wait to play another day.
  25. Of course there are better things we could be doing with our time, but then again, it is our time, so we're free to spend it as we please. Damn the person that dares to say that I've 'wasted' what belongs to me and only me. Besides, I play because it's a game. Games keep me distracted from reality, and no one person amongst us can happily admit that they can live their lives without games.
