  1. Aside from the warped correlation(s) to RWT and it being against the rules [which, in fact, it is not], I completely agree with this rant. About a day and a half after I got members back, I was interested in trying out some Godswords, to see which one I'd like more in PvP or PvE. My friend loaned me a Saradomin GS for free for twelve hours, and so I had a great experience with that one. However, I wanted to try out the others. The rates were ludicrous, varying from 90 to 100K an hour. I truly don't believe it allows RWT, but I do believe it's a corrupt business. It shouldn't have come to pass.
  2. Myself. If I finally determined that I was too busy, or that this game took too much away from me, then I would quit myself. No update of Jagex can change that determination.
  3. @doomsavenger: Case in point, in regards to fat_klutz's post. Notice how he hasn't presented anything worth discussion, and instead of giving something for other Rants posters to comment/criticize/barter with, he gives us all an unusable anti-Jagex post. I'm not against them ranting, like I said earlier. I'm just against someone lambasting Jagex as if they were Communist.
  4. ...After this statement I just stopped reading altogether. If you think that the only way for your friend is to really enjoy the game is to buy gold, then he shouldn't be playing. To me, this just screams of laziness, and because of players like him, we had to endure the updates. IMO, he shouldn't even be allowed near a computer. Oh, not to mention, this was off-topic; the real topic at hand was how to combat the new and improved RWT (if it even exists). IP blacklisting, yes? Been there, tried that, it doesn't take much time to renew it. You'd think that they'd eventually run out of IPs, but you'd be surprised -- there is an astonishing amount of networks/available IPs out there.
  5. I don't think so. My reasoning is actually rather simple -- adults that do it on a frequent basis aren't very social, and people don't hang out or associate with them after a while. Of course, children/teenagers are just discovering these four-and-five-letter words, and they think it's cool or adult to use them every other word. It doesn't seem like it would be the best thing. I don't like it when adults that I associate with on a daily basis swear every other second, so why should I tolerate some kid swearing?
  6. It's kinda miraculous that you've missed my entire point by such a massive margin. -.- Anyway, I don't see at all how we're forced to deal with kids in-game. Hell, you're not even permitted to ask their age. All you have are conjectures and theories as to their real age; and no, not everyone uses proper grammar all the time. I also don't see how they're the ones that send in false reports to get "innocent" players banned. For all you know that could be a 14 year old. Wouldn't that be a real kick in the teeth. Lastly, I can't see how they're also the ones begging. Panhandlers, which could be seen as a real-life comparison to beggars, are as old as sixty-five in my state. And as for the noob thing, we were all once noobs, it's nothing new, it's not even an argument. As for the whole soapbox about how kids younger than 13 shouldn't be online, or the "no-benefits" thing, or the non-online fun+educational thing, doesn't that ring true for yourself? Granted, I make the assumption that you're at least older than 13, but RuneScape offers you no benefits, either. It doesn't offer ANYONE that plays it ANY benefits, unless they grow up and work for Jagex. Is this you being a hypocrite? Lastly, companies don't exist unless they turn a profit. Jagex is no exception. Even a twelve year-old could understand that.
  7. The one thing that kills communication between other generations (and simultaneously making students' English grades look like they were taking Chinese) is our lack of grammar. We don't use it because we generally accept the philosophy, 'As long as they understand the point I was conveying, there's no need to use proper grammar'. There are separate cases when not using grammar is applicable, such as in RuneScape, but when you're on a forum, or have at least some time to put together a response, then it sure doesn't hurt to make sure you're using the right conjunctions, or that you've spelled out your words as thorough as you can. @Fenrir: There are situations when sentences like that actually make literal sense. For example: "Your point makes no sense." Rearrange a few words in that, and you get, "Sense your point makes no." It's still using proper grammar, nothing is out of place or misused.
  8. How has it been ruined? Does the presence of children ruin the game for you? I don't really believe that online gaming is good for children under 15 (yeah, fifteen), but that's ultimately all up to the parent. I know that I haven't suffered worth anything with children in the game. Heck, they at least refresh my thinking on adult things. [Even if I am just a young adult.] I believe this is a game, and as such, should be enjoyed by as many people that choose to enjoy it -- regardless of age. Do you believe this is a game or real life? Because the way you're sounding about it, you might as well be in Congress, lobbying against video games.
  9. Agreed. So... You believe it's for the best if players are able to curse like sailors? You believe it's for the best if the rules were made so that the more fortunate players held the advantages? [Read] You believe it's a bad idea to improve barriers around dangerous parts of the game? [Read]
  10. 1) I thought that players under 13 could only use QuickChat. This means that while yes, there are children in the game, they CANNOT speak with their own freedoms. 2) I thought that the parental dashboard was for PARENTS. 3) I thought that players had gotten over the xenophobic pedophobia associated with younger players. Are we honestly not mature enough to play with children < 13, or am I the only one that it doesn't faze? EDIT: If you can't tell from my sardonic train of thought there, I can't believe that they're genuinely marketing the game for younger people. Consider that GTA is marketed at a mature/adult audience; that sure as hell doesn't stop 14 year olds from playing it, now does it?
  11. My first thought as to when I read this thread was that this was pretty much the same ol' nonsense coming from our most beloved troll. But I wanted to be the better man and give you the benefit of the doubt, so I checked the sites personally. What I found: * Every site wants credentials -- username, password, PIN, recoveries, etc., before ANY gold is transferred, period. * Every site needs a LOT of time for you to transfer goods, especially on a freeplay account -- consider that it's a rate of 12K/hr on freeplay, which means for 1M, you'd need to wait about 83 1/3 hours to get fully paid. Depending on how much more gold you bought, you can double or triple that amount of time. Natrually, BH is a faster way to do it, but it's much more risky. Didn't see any mention of BH, though. Sorry. What I didn't find: * Evidence that RWT is back and/or strong. * Evidence that macroing is back or will become rampant again. * Evidence that any of these sites even had gold to be selling in the first place. I'll spell it out for you. RWT was never given a true killing blow. That just can't happen -- it's too numerous and hard to combat in legal battles. What RWT was given was a severely hobbling blow, which in effect, caused a fatal wound. RWT will bleed for years at this obviously slowed rate of development instead of flourish. I suppose that my first hunch was right. This ain't the era of McCarthyism anymore, so until you get some real evidence, all of your posts are a mathematical error.
  12. I was never against anyone ranting about the updates. What I was saying that we should be able to discern between a real rant and propaganda against Jagex. I don't mind if someone wants to put together a comprehensive rant about this (and yes, it has to be comprehensive; time has already set in and if you're going to be complaining after THIS long, it better be thoughtful), but I do mind if someone comes through, telling me how much Jagex sucks, how much the game sucks, how much they hate Jagex, and so forth. If that much were true, they'd have left already.
  13. Just because they're going to be upset doesn't mean that they're going to get their way. Schools have been pushing to ban sodas for years now, and since it's all up to the parents/PTA, if soda goes bye-bye, the kids will have to live with getting it from the 7-Eleven after school. 1) In a sense, no skill relies on Summoning, but you can't deny its effect on them -- Yaks, Unicorns, Bunyip, Titans -- nothing relies on them, but they make other skills simpler to do. 2) Remove Thieving? How would you get the Pharaoh's Sceptre? Full Rogue? Those things are two that cannot be regained in any other method, and although they're probably the only two, it still counts. 3) Removing a skill is radically different than adjusting the Wilderness because of one simple thing -- audience. How many people use skills? How many people used to PK? Compare the numbers and there really isn't a contest. That's entirely up to them if they want to leave an entire school over something that minor. In retrospect, you have your real-life analogies mixed up -- you can compare the Monkfish change to no more soda, whereas changing the Wilderness is like having a closed campus. With the proper analogy, a closed campus is a serious thing -- puts a damper on upper classmen and their freedoms -- but again, it's entirely up to them if they want to leave over something trivial. Just like there are other schools, there are other MMOGs. I'm not saying that rants about the Wilderness are pointless, I'm simply saying that there is an exit if they really don't like it as much as they preach against it.
  14. I wanted to be well-rested before I responded to this topic. Sure hope that it comes across that way. I [at least] agree with you here. I condone the Rants forum to be a place of relieving steam. However, do you know the difference between someone venting and someone spewing propaganda? I mean, I can condone someone being upset about an update, but can you honestly say that half of the rants on the first page of the Rants board qualify as real "rants"? Some of the topics introduce complaints so minute (honestly, who cares about how we walk or what color a chest is now), players would either get used to it or stop complaining about it in two weeks' time. More or less, if the rant can't hold water, we'd like some justification to back it up. Sadly, this comes across as "come up with a solution"; that part I'll agree with you. How long ago was it that the Wilderness was changed? Seriously. The people that rant about missing it make it sound like they lost their arm or leg or some other appendage, and that they will never be a whole person until they can get it back. Sheesh. By the by, you can't compare this to the war in Iraq. Period. The war in Iraq is the real deal, and there is no 'scape goat to use to escape that reality; on the other hand, other MMOs exist for the ranters to play if they're that dissatisfied with RuneScape. Fallacious thinking. A skill is a staple of the game, or what the game revolves around. You can't just remove a skill. Minigames, side stories, mini-quests, on the other hand -- such as the Wilderness -- if they're changed, the affected will come to terms or leave. Angry about a recent update: understandable. Angry about an update that happened WAAAAAAY back: unreasonable. The Rants forums' initial purpose was to simply provide a place for players to relieve steam, but the reality of it is that players which are still clinging on to the olden days can never relieve steam. They seek a resolution which will never happen. In effect, they're entering a vicious cycle; bitterly upset about an update, rant for resolution, resolution falls on deaf ears, and so forth. This means that players get sick and tired of hearing the same rants over and over again, and as such, will say things like "deal with it", "get over it", and so forth. There are updates to the game that I don't agree with, most notably the recent "item loaning" update. But, that doesn't mean that I'm going to go on a tirade against Jagex, consider them "fools" for this update, and remain on a soapbox about this forever. While there are people here that rant and don't go on a propaganda crusade against Jagex and their updates, those types of rants are few and far between.
  15. Simple. International laws are much more opaque when it comes to violation of a ToS on an online game, and as a result, the amount of money spent defending the [flimsy] litigation from Jagex's standpoint is unreasonably high. Also, you have to note that whatever legal power Jagex has only extends as far as the British Government; only in special cases can they take it a few steps higher to other national governments. Of course, the US and Canada are much more helpful with these types of situations, but it still takes a while to get a ruling. Using a legal battle to fight RWT is costly and time-consuming. Despite rumors to the contrary, lawyers are paid by the hour, and given the most recent example that we can associate with RWT and legal battles -- I believe it was an eight month long lawsuit -- those lawyers profited significantly more from the whole debacle than Blizzard or any other MMOG company ever would from those efforts. [by the way, it's trivially easy for a RWT website to disband and reappear somewhere else in the world. This makes legal proceedings a lot harder, depending on what nation their server is in.]
  16. The whole issue of players who call themselves "old school" and sit themselves on a pedestal higher than the rest of the RS community is hypocritical. Sure, I've been here since Halloweeen Masks, Santa hats, Bunny ears and the Scythe, but in the end, it doesn't mean a damn thing. Just keep it in mind -- in the end, it doesn't matter how long you've played; all that matters is that you enjoyed playing.
  17. What more needs to be said?
  18. Now rub your banhammer wounds, and start complaining to Jagex. Though if you don't want to sound like a douche you could just message Jagex saying they made a mistake, so that you don't receive a black mark. [/hide] Makoto... READ THAT. Read it. Regardless, one should always err on the side of caution, especially when dealing with random jerks in the fishing guild. It's still a website being advertised. Naturally, Jagex shouldn't have punished him, but you could see where someone could have made a mistake. Assume nothing when it comes to the rules. WBMs and their ilk are out to get you in trouble, and the only way to marginalize that is to not give them a reason to go report-crazy.
  19. Surely, you must see where you were in the wrong here. Regardless of how it's passed back and forth in banter, advertising just ain't allowed.
  20. I think I'll play Devils' Advocate here and side with highlanders. Your argument has no premise; it's honestly like inferring that we can still RWT with our (max 30K) trade limit. Besides, you're seriously underplaying the true supply of Godswords; it isn't like RWT companies have thousands of these things. Oh, and if you think they do, you'd better be ready to prove it. I don't buy into inferences and Google pages.
  21. Short answer: Yes with an if; long answer: No, with a but. [sorry, couldn't resist. Back on topic...] I do feel that we could definitely use more "ultimate" weapons, something that is insanely powerful, and only the strongest of players should ever even see it... but, the whole basis of combat must be revised before it could be accepted. Our limits of 99HP is...naturally, a *major* barrier. With this, we can only hit so high (and with the Armadyl Godsword, we're pushing the zenith). Our hitpoints levels (perhaps other combat skills, as well) shouldn't reflect the cap of our combat prowess; that'd be the only way that ultimate weapons would gain traction. [Oh, and by the by, make sure that magic can finally hit above a 30. Can we go for 35?]
  22. Well, that's ultimately your fault. Jagex can't put AV on your machine for you. Nor should they be responsible for the integrity of your machine. Let's suppose for a second that Jagex did put those mechanisms up. Would that still save you from a keylogger?
  23. Makoto_the_Phoenix replied to Alg's topic in Rants
Here's a nice theory that I've been using (since it's literally the only thing that I can think of): Raison d'etre. Simply put, it means "reason to be". Perhaps playing RuneScape is all they can do. Now, keep in mind, claims of playing other games and actually going through with it are two, very separate ideals.
  24. A little more than a year back, I wrote an article for RuneHead, when they were still doing editorials. Ironically enough, my topic was about hackers/account security. Here's an excerpt: [Source] To sum up: There is no cyberlock that can be created that can replace your own responsibility to keep your account and computer secure. Period.
  25. I didn't know that people didn't make board games or play cards.
