Tip.It Times - 19th August 2012
I disagree with phasing out a word simply because it's misused. We don't phase out the term lag when it's frequently used to describe FPS drops instead of actual lagging connections. The difference between these two issues is the conflict it generates. But as you pointed out in the previous paragraph, that's due to ignorance/stupidity. You don't combat stupidity by removing the things they've yet to learn, though. You continue to educate in different ways. Censoring is a particularly bad idea, especially since if we go with the replacement method, we're assuming that everyone is using the term incorrectly. That's not acceptable and it's not a proper way to teach. There would be no tangible progress there. When it comes to clarifying the board's own rules, I actually wouldn't mind removing the term trolling from 1.3. You pointed out the misuse of the word, and you're correct. But it would serve no purpose because whether or not it's the word "trolling" or "harassing", they can be equally misused. Applying the word trolling to that clause that covers offensive behavior communicates a clearer picture of what is okay and what isn't than simply stating "harassment." As staff, if someone marks something and it violates the rules - yet not for what it was originally marked for - we take the appropriate action regardless of what the submitter thought it violated. And if it doesn't break any rules, we take no action. That's a bit of bad research there, but I just had to address it because that's a very personal issue for me and I can't help but be a little sensitive to something like that. Like I said at the beginning, I think you counter stupidity and ignorance by continuing to educate. You don't make lasting progress by cracking down like some Big Brother-styled dictators. Action like that should only be made in the most dire circumstances as a (very!) short term plan so you can control the situation long enough to enact long term changes. I think your article did a great job in explaining the problem with the common "troll." I just hope that what you sought to teach can be effectively communicated to those who need the lessons the most. If not, I fear that a good effort like yours might be wasted. (There's so much to talk about in this week's Times, I feel like I have to wait until the discussion switches to another article before I can post more! @_@)

No. Being a pansy makes you a pansy. \:D/ :twss: But I wasn't a pansy before so I needed to clarify if reading that made me one. Brush up on your troll logic boysonmankidson.

Graphic work for a 2D RPG
If he's paying you for the one on the right, that's his funeral. I personally think after all the detail you put into the artwork to look realistic, that choosing a chibi character model "devalues" that work. To put it bluntly, it looks weird and out of place. Cartoon-y rpgs don't really stand out in the market, either. Off the top of my head I can only really think of one, and that's AdventureQuest...which should answer some questions for him right there. >_> Other than that, the environments are beautiful works and the fully clothed player kit looks amazing. (Can I get the name of the RPG? :3)

Well Known RWT'rs banned.
Jagex can't even track MASSIVE VOLUMES of traded gold now. Do you really think, assuming the old system of restricted trade comes back, that they will track mule trades of 200k+ at a time? More to the point, that they'll be able to ban them then? People who think that re-instating restricted trade will stop the botting problem probably thought last year's bot nuke would last forever, too, I bet. Added to the fact that I'm almost positive Angry Aussie was being sarcastic.

Well Known RWT'rs banned.
Well when you get banned for RWTing, the thing is you can just buy a new account and wealth from private sellers using the RWT'd funds. I doubt it would even take 3 or 4 days. More like...hours, honestly. That's the state Jagex's "detection systems" have left the game in. It's kind of pathetic that RWTing essentially becomes insurance against ending your game experience permanently as well as an income generator.

The Bot-o-meter; How do you feel about Jagex's actions towards bots?
Your post reminds me of the movie Fun With Dick and Jane: I've got no doubt that tackling the bot problem is on their to-do list. I just think it's so abysmally low because there is more money to be made elsewhere rather than trying to temporarily break a problem that has no end. They'll do it when the time period they pick gives them the most benefit, and from then on the clock starts ticking. I don't think making the changes they need to - that they're fully capable of - in order to improve what they're offering to their customers is very high on their list of priorities. Their customers who potential profiting, instead of being limited to just memberships, has opened up to almost limitless possibilities thanks to microtransactions. So no, I'm not saying they don't care. I'm saying they don't care enough to fix things like account recovery, "duh" bugs in the game, and really hitting organized RWT groups. It's easier for them to continue as they are and gain more revenue via MT's while reciting hollow warnings about how botting will get you banned. (The thing about giving orders you know won't be obeyed is that it puts people in the habit of disobeying them.)

The Bot-o-meter; How do you feel about Jagex's actions towards bots?
Money was always their primary concern because turning a profit ensured they kept their jobs. That particularly shouldn't shock you. I don't know how that makes this topic bad, though.

The Bot-o-meter; How do you feel about Jagex's actions towards bots?
Unless you're an employee of Jagex, you're going to have to be making a few assumptions. By going, "OMG OBVIOUSLY WRONG" to the data presented that happens over time in line with bot wipes and using it as a platform to attack the topic creator is just silly. We all know what's happening here when they do these wipes. No need for us to play Statistician here, because that level of accuracy isn't necessary here.

Well Known RWT'rs banned.
I don't give two craps that they banned these accounts, because it's all fluff. But this? Hiscores for F2P again? Yes. This...yes. I'll even ignore the fact that they're backpedaling because of the bad press and lack of promised membership increases from such a horrendous update for the F2P Hiscores to return. Implying they removed it because of gold farming bots... lol.

Certain Corrupt Mod Oblivious to Recent Update?
IVPex are born without an innate sense of irony :P Meh no one reports it, mods never handle it. That's the problem when you have a system wholly dependent on user reports....but then have the SHITTIEST report system and response time ever. Basically if it's not gigantic ascii penises, you're never getting reported content handled at a reasonable time. There are good reasons why the RSOF is regarded as a cesspool. And Jagex refuse to work on giving a good forum platform for their own freaking game. Their own game! They need to take a page out of Gamefaq's book and re-structure their boards in a way that handles high volume traffic - stealing snippits from fansite boards here-and-there (and then poorly implementing them!) isn't enough.

Kid gets robbed over RSGP
No one is saying that if he never RWT'd he'd be robbed at gunpoint, just that something that is illegal can have negative effects sometimes. You know well enough to see the difference without shouting "FALLACY FALLACY."

Quest points in dynamic signatures
You're right. It belongs in Website Discussion, and I'll move it there now. It was an honest mistake though since those signatures are easily mistaken as a forum feature since that's the only place you use them on. ...Or you could have just saved the snark and reported it since you cared enough to comment on it. :P But hey, to each his own and all that crap. Moved to WD.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
How about me wearing a viking helm in a brothel? >_> Only if you hold a mug of mead in one hand and a saucy wench in the other.

What book are you currently reading?
I finished book 12 and I'm on book 13 now and I can say, Sanderson gets better as he goes. Still abrupt and strange at times, but at least it isn't as bad as before. Or maybe I'm just getting used to it. At least this book seems to be setting up for a more satisfying conclusion than 12 did - which was just plain weird.

Fero ring glitched?
Then you need to provide evidence to the fact as per H&A rules.

Kid gets robbed over RSGP
I think that says more about the communities of WoW and RS than the respective companies policies on returning items. Not in this case. This aspect of the community is shaped (or controlled) by the policies of the company.

The Evolution of Combat: BETA discussion
I am able to do infinite trips had I wanted to do so. But I'm simply noticing things; it was even stated here in this topic you "simply had to get the right equipment". I'm not sure about you, but I -at almost all 95+ lvls- have not 50m laying around to buy things. You don't even need that much money to buy good defensive gear, even though you're wrongfully assuming the prices of today will match what they'll settle to post-EOC.
