The Future Of Runescape

Featured Replies

How do you see the future of runescape 5, 10, or even 15 years from now. What changes do you expect to see in runescape? What differences?

Some people may think that nothing dealing with graphics or sound will change drastically, becuase jagex is trying to make the game compatible with most computers.

What about the skills? Will there be anymore additions? What skills will they be?

I doubt the game will still exist in 15 years.

In 5 years...

* Graphics somewhat improved.

* Moved off browser based game into something other than Java script since this is what limits many potential game features.

* At least 5 new skills.

* 99 cap raised to 126

I exspect a new game engine, with better graphics. Either a quest ending RS2 for some players meaning a new game, or something of the works.

The new game with better graphics would either be Before runescape (the god wars era) or after the fall of runescape (new territories)

Either that or start from scratch and make a whole new game

runescape requires a lot of skills, napoleon dynamyte would love this game

i am the proud owner of the quest point cape; all quests done 12/04/06

Give a man a lighter, and he will be warm for a while.

Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

rs is going to blow up na i think it will be going storng still in 10 years and um alot of people will play it

We will actually allowed into the Priffandis :)

I doubt RS will improve that much in 5 years. New challenges could be good, and to fix the game they could just remove Pest Control.

The 99 cap is not going to be raised.. ever.. I bet my Irish heritage on it...

I hope to God they make it on a CD. I also hope to God that they do not take Madeof12une's idea, (no offence) but, I mean I;d quit the game if I had to start over. Also, they should not get rid of pest control, whats so wrong with pest control? Thats like saying using a guilded altar for training prayer is noobish, thats ridiculous. You are given an awesome mini game to help you raise some maybe expensive skills for free, you turn around and Blame Jagex for trying to do good.

OT: I also hope they make more skills, and to stay with swords and medieval armor. (My bro made a suggestion of having guns in RS, BLECH.)

Just my two cents,

RS will not exist in 15 years, 8 at most. If it still does exist then, the membership will likely be drastically reduced (25% or less of current numbers.)

I agree that it's possible it will move off of online - and possibly onto a downloadable/buyable basis (like WoW or others). This is especially true if it goes to RS3.

Skills? A few more come to mind, but rather than naming anything in particular, I'll say what "Skill Gaps" there are at the moment. There are some gaps with "making" skills such as smithing / crafting / herblore / etc. Jagex could either expand on these skills or they could create a new one that fills the gaps. (Such as crafting mage robes.)

Clearly the most likely addition to a skill (as in the most room for expansion) has to do with the whole summoning / harnessing the power of monsters / etc.

Think of the last four skills they've released: Hunter, Construction, Farming, Slayer and all are somewhat non-traditional. Whether it's in the style they're leveled or the rewards of each, they really are greatly different than the rest of the skills in the game. If anything, they represent a sort of RS 2.5 and should be considered as such. If there are new skills added, then they will likely follow a similar formula as the most recent additions.

Keep in mind that Jagex's biggest commodity at the moment are the players who play RS2, not the product itself (this is strange and antithetical, I know). They could potentially release a whole new platform / game such as Blizzard did with WoW over a Starcraft super expansion or something. Though even in that case, Blizzard had a whole history of other Warcraft versions/games to base WoW on.

I think what will happen is that Jagex will play the junkyard dog for awhile and try to expand their game to other countries (e.g. German worlds). If that isn't successful by late 2008, they may consider in mid to late 2009 doing the whole platform / game switch.

Please don't forget that it's evident to many of us that Jagex management is horribly incoherent in a "grand strategy" at times. (Latest letter from the editor is evidence of this.) This is beginning to look like a game that has reached its end (not because of creativity), but because of managerial incompetence. The game's creators are reaching the point where their programming skills and talents are no longer sufficient to carry them through the minefields of managing a successful game. Their nebulous approach to the third-party world switchers is evident that Jagex Towers does not have a consistent grand strategy to where this game is going. They could clearly develop a client with most of the functionality (ahem: calcs and hiscores) that you find in the world-switchers, but they choose not to for unknown reasons.

I think Jagex has been happy with their success to this point (as am I), though I feel their decisions have been for the last 8 - 12 months have been to a greater degree been focused on getting the glut of f2pers from miniclip 2 years ago to sign up for members. (Just a FYI: As of now, Runescape isn't even in the top 10 of games played through Miniclip....food for thought.)

Lastly, if you're truly interested in some honest discussion about this, perhaps check out the Bugs / Suggestions forum (there should be distinct forums for those mods!) and check out some of the threads there. You'll find a bit deeper discussion there than the regular "polling" threads on general or general p2p.

Values? What do they mean?

How well Runescape does in the future, if by you mean how "well" is how many people play it, depends on a great degree with the competition. If the new games are better than Runescape, people will begin those games, passing up Runescape. And, since most people do not play two mmorpg's, Runescape will ge hurt. There are several new, expensive mmorpg's being released later this year. Over the next 5 years, there will be many. It depends on how it stacks up.

Jagex has made some bad choices lately....

But i don't think that they will change anything drastic like raising the level cap or exp cap. I just hope the blokes at Jagex Towers get a hold of things or they will not be able to control it anymore.

IM A RC PKER 4 LIFE

just think...we've all put so much time into this game....personally, i really dont know what i would do without it....its kinda my way out...to relieve stress....and if in a few years it just dissapears? was 2 or 3 years of my life wasted playing this game?

Its kind of a contradiction.....i want runescape to stay the same for a while, but there are so many people that play now....some days, there are like 1.1k people in each world....its insane. Jagex has to make updates....to accomodate the new players. (even if the updates are bad, Jagex still has to create new skills.) They probably know that the updates arent the best, but they have to continue to update the game.

I just hope if they make a runescape 3 or something...we will be able to keep our stats and items.....some people have worked hard for their items just to have them stay on a previous game.

I think in the future there'll be a 95+ requirement to play pest control and all of the worlds would be good.

Go to a high-level pest control clan.

The game probably won't be ported to another platform any time soon. It's written in Java, which is not meant for games like WoW or Age of Empires and such.

I have a feeling that eventually, we'll be seeing plans for a whole new game engine, run not on a java applet, but on a locally installed executable. I'm amazed what they've been able to do with the java envirnonment, but it does put forth quite a few performance limitations.

In effect, I'm looking forward to a rs3

In the future Pest Control will be back where it belongs, in Hell.

Dangit, it's already there.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

I'd like to see something like a quest you can only do after you've finished every other one. one that leads to a new god war or something, you choose a god to support and have to eventually defeat the other gods, something along those lines

Yeah, if Jagex currently consider themselves Java game experts i don't see them having any plans to move the game off browser, at least not in the next 5 years. maybe after...

how about the future lying in the future of the java engine or handheld devices. mobile rs anyone??? =P~ =P~ :XD:
