Chubbysanta
As an experienced player of the game, with a low level and a high interest in the community, I thought I would try to learn some more about the 3 million or so players I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know about. At first this seemed impossible and I spent a while trying to compare the community to something. Then it came to me- High School. High School is a hierarchy of jocks, cheerleaders, geeks, nerds, new kids, stoners, try hards and the increasing group of people who hang out as normal people should, talking to anyone and not caring about this hierarchy. Now in modern day society this is of most importance, as we don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t want smart influential people sweeping streets and drunks becoming our head of government. High School is different: Without this hierarchy does anyone think that kids who were wearing the wrong pants and shirt would be shoved in the hall way and talked about until they left at the end of the day. No it would simply make an equality, and a huge balance of egos, brain power and kindness. And at the end of that day you feel as if you are surrounded by and aurora of invincibility, as if you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re untouchable due to your equal status. I feel that way most days, as at my school only three or four really horrible kids are left out of the balance. At tip.it-you are to some extent anonymous, you choose what you want to say and do and most of the time it is to someone you won̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t ever meet, and the majority of people leave it at that. Getting more the point, forums somewhat define a person more, as if they were kind and considerate they wouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t abuse someone else̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s thread or spam etc. In the game a scammer, lurer or hacker can be one of two things; inconsiderate or content on breaking up a six year community. Is that how YOU want to be perceived? Personally I wouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t like to be seen as a scammer or an untrustworthy person. I want to be seen as the player who helps out a lot and doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t expect much in return. An example of this is the following statement by Buddha: The Buddha said, "When you see someone practicing the Way of giving, aid him joyously, and you will obtain vast and great blessings." A shramana asked: "Is there an end to those blessings?" The Buddha said, "Consider the flame of a single lamp. Though a hundred thousand people come and light their own lamps from it so that they can cook their food and ward off the darkness, the first lamp remains the same as before. Blessings are like this, too." It means help those who are helping as every person makes a difference- just like the lamp. It another category of our players; helpers, people you give you a anti poison when your dying, someone donating food at barrows- it all helps! It would take me too long to discuss each group, but let me assure you: For every bad category of people there are five good groups out there helping friends with quests, showing noobs how to make it to draynor and generally being the people that give the game and the world a good name. Well done to you people, take thought on my comparison of highschool, help when you can and seize the day! If you Follow that way I hope Buddha̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s words come true for you. Please discuss my topic with thought and sensitivity. I Quit. You should too.

Celt23
Internet is great that way. So much more diverse and flexible than things like, as you said, a school 'hierarchy'. Can't think of anything else to say. Great post.
GrimHams
Is it only america where everyone cares about a "social hierarchy", maybe im just lucky with schools but we dont have any groups..apart from the emos and chavs but they do it on purpose, everyone else is just a person. On rs i also dont care what people think of me.
Hiierarch
/\ Lol. "Hierarchy"- My name- "Hiierarch". I had to use two I s because one was taken. But related to your topic, I like what you said. There is that small percentage that will go the extra 9 yards. You've got that arrogant high levels, the rich merchants, the pures, the noobs, the skillers, the stakers, etc.

hellbellz
I'm with Stilev, looks like a good article, maybe if it was a teeeeeeny bit larger. Hehe. I try to come out as a guy who tries to make his GP not by scamming, luring, or hacking. i try to help people out, and I'm laid back. When I know people, I act like I do in real life, I'm funny, I can get offensive sometimes, but in reality I don't mean stupid things I say, or type. I try to not act like a jerk, but I can be. :-#
Dalcyte
i totally agree with one good deed from one person sparks good deeds throughout the world, and i think that is a refreshing statement to make. You'll give someone some food or cash, and they'll remember you when someone else is asking, and do the same...creating a chain. But the problem arouses when you come across someone who is one of those icky types who just begs off of ya, and you give them, in turn hoping for a good deed to someone else, but they remain selfish and seclusive. mcneilp
Great Post! I agree with what u said and i usually try to help new players, eg when i started fletchin i had hundreds of normal longbows, i went f2p nd handed em out in lumby for free, one per person so more people could get one but then there were the other kind of player who, no matter what u do for em, they always want more and kept tradin even tho they alredy had one. Just goes to show that, like high school, there is a mixed bag of players who frequent the runescape servers... It isn't in the castle, It isn't in the mist, It's a calling of the waters, As they break to show, The new Black Death, With reactors aglow, Do you think your security, Can keep you in purity, You will not shake us off above or belowScottish frictionScottish fiction

Aquashock
Ive quit helping people. After years of helping people more and more often im seeing a backlash of stupidity in rs. This just is NOT the community (in general) that we had in early RSC. While i still help people, they must prove to me they are not an inconsiderate jerk. The ammount of lurers, scammers, and hackers has gone up soo much, playing the way I always have is actually hindering me and my friends ability to play the game. Now im getting to the point where I just don't care about anyone who proves to me that they are idiots. ^^Click For Monster Hunting Blog (180M+ in drops)^^

Now im getting to the point where I just don't care about anyone who proves to me that they are idiots. I'm not gonna lie. I'm torn between these two sides. On one hand, i want to help people and make others happy. On the other hand, if someone asks "Can i have 10k plz!!!!!!!!!" one more time, I'm gonna lose it. There's something to be said for the true effect of the kindness you're willing to give. To the common beggar, giving 10k doesn't really do much. You have merely provided them with the ends they were seeking. They're about as thankful and pleased with you as I am to the people of Miscillania every time I unload 10k flax (which is to say, not at all). It's when people are in a jam, and they truely need help, when being the flame is really important. For example, a level 80 dies and loses his brand new whip at hellhounds, and you pick it up, pm him, find him, and give it back. You know they worked forever to raise the money they needed to buy that thing, and they are CRUSHED when they die (this is how many people quit). By doing the right thing, and not keeping it, you will make this person's month, and they will truely be thankful for helping them out of a huge jam. In case you skimmed that last lengthy paragraph, my point is this: kindness goes a long way sometimes, and not so much others. If you hate beggars and value your sanity, help people out of tough spots, but don't encourage the lazy to continue to be lazy. You can't help everyone. Its the people who become friends with you, and when they are in a bind, take full advantage of you and your assets. If a friend of mine died and lost something really expensive, I, as well as most people, would lend them the item if we had it untill they can get their own. Yet this encourages the lazy behavior, and what happens, they get careless and loose something else, and something else. This keeps on going until you ask for an/all item(s) back, and then poof, they get angry and log out and you loose everything. Now, ive given BACK items that i saw people loose to add up to over 50m, but i have also kept about 5m in items due to people being jerks. ^^Click For Monster Hunting Blog (180M+ in drops)^^
Hevendor_Guy
Excellent post, make it longer and send it for Tip.It Times. =D> I try to come across as a laid-back and carefree person, I don't really dwell on someone else's misfortunes or unkind deeds, but I can be a satirical jerk if I have the motive :-# There's cake through here, apparently. highlanders
In high-school, I'm considered as the 'mysterious guy'. And hit yourself with a spade if you're imagining an emo! Ahhhhh.... EWww... And in Rs, ummm, Idk, we look alike. On tip.it, we got the 'serious' boring people, always taking themselves SOO seriously. We got the off-topic philosophical freaks which go on discussions that never end up anywhere.. I call them the 'everything is relative'. And this is exactly this kind of thread, ahh the boreness.. Then we got a few of nubs that ended up here, the lurers/scammers, 11 yrs old kids, Rc pkers, the lame-os of Rs. How did they find this forum anyway? Then we got the 'cheer-ers' always cheering up and saying 'omg, nice!' to everything and everyone. Then we got the fun, easygoing, clever ppl such as me (rare finds  ). Ahh I'm forgetting some. But anyway, point is, we can classify ppl here too lol Ah, and it's true greatness and happiness passes tru compassion. Now that you know that, you must find a way to apply it, not so easy, I'm at that point right now. :XD: 2480+ total
