Is it still a 99, or a skill cape?

Featured Replies

I've recently been cooking up to 99, and I was thinking about why I was actually raising it.

Before skill capes, the only reason to get a 99, was to have a 99. With the introduction of skill capes, it seems more and more people are getting 99's only to get a skill cape now. I know the reason they released skill capes was for people to have an incentive to get a 99, but that seems to be the ONLY incentive now. And for people with more than one 99; Was trimming your cape the reason for it?

So after thinking about it, the only reason I'm getting 99 cooking is in fact to trim my cape. I got 99 fm because I wanted 99 fm (and it was before skill capes).

My question(s) to you is this: Are the tides turning? Has getting a 99 to have a 99 vanished as an incentive? Why did you get your 99? Your second?

Skill capes gave players a way to physically show off skills. Before capes, having a 99 stat was unnoticable. People wouldnt believe each other, and it would turn into a "look me up" war. So it was not only hard to show off your stats, it was also barely believeable. But now, players have the ability to show off thier stats, just as they can show off wealth. It adds a greant incentive to leveling up.

It's comparable to merchanting. People would work up to wear a phat or masks, to show that they have wealth. Now they work up similarly, but for skill levels instead.

I know it adds a great incentive. My question is if it's the ONLY incentive. Is that the only reason people want a 99? To show off they have it? Not because they want a 99 just to have one?

Good job not reading the whole post.

I don't have a 99 but if i did push to get one, it would be for the skill cape, and then i would get a second to trim it.

thaT's what i was answering...and believe it or not, soome people actually don't have 99's! i can't believe it either! omigosh! i don't have a 99 either!

do u really think that a person will remember why they got a 99? i am personally going for 99 wc just for the massive amunt of money it will rake in. does that answer your question? :?: :?: :?:

For most skills, I see no purpose in leveling to 99. Reasonings why people didn't have that incentive are stated quite well in the Introduction section of TipIt's Achievement Cape Guide (too lazy to get url). Now after skillcapes, we have a reason. I mean, hell, there isn't a jet-black cape other than the slayer one (just as an example of the uniqueness of skillcapes), and the lapel things hanging over your chest look great too.

And the stats aren't bad either :D. Personally, I don't care why you got your 99. If you achieved it legitimately for whatever reason, good for you, congratulations.

There's cake through here, apparently.

i dont see a point in getting a 99 just to have it... how fun is that?

Long since retired.

I know it adds a great incentive. My question is if it's the ONLY incentive. Is that the only reason people want a 99? To show off they have it? Not because they want a 99 just to have one?

Thats what i was saying :P, now people get it mostly for the show-off. I wasnt saying it adds incentive, I was saying it IS [the] incentive. Why else would 11k+ people suddenly decide to go for 99 cooking as their first 99? Statistically, it points to the capes.

It's more or less the reason (next to making money) for getting a 99 before skill capes.

i get 99s just so i can have that certain skill maxed... Maxed skill = no more training unless i really like it lol.. I don't care too much about the skill cape i like the actual level itself..

Runescape has always been about flaunting your ego; this is nothing new.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

people just want capes now-a-days

yeah they just get them to show off, but honestly i have no respect for 99 cookers or fletching simply because there too easy to get and far to cheap

clansig7.gif

I have to admit, you're right...the main reason people are getting 99's these days is the incentive of the skill cape. My first 99, thieving, I got because thieving was my favorite skill, and I wanted to get it as high as possible. I have to admit, though, that the only reason I got 99 cooking was to trim my cape.

^Thanks Lil_Atza!

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. ... Smells like...victory.

i dunno about everyone else, but i get a 99 for the 99, could careless about the cape. most people dont believe me when i say i have 1900+ skill total, with 3 level 99s kuz i dont wear a skill cape, but i do ::' personally i think they look ugly and they are to common, i much more perfer legends, and obby capes

legends2.jpg

some skills only incentive for getting 99 is the skill cape. By this I mean 99 offers very little to no advantage over having a level lower then that.

For example, constuction...with 93(about half of 99 xp wise) you can use tea+crystal saw to get the 99...

Firemaking is another one of these skills, crafting, fletching, fishing, mining, slayer...

Skills that 99 is not only just for the cape include all combat skills, magic, range, prayer, cooking maybe, smithing, maybe woodcut...

I raised strength to smack people around. Not like you can wear a cape into castle wars anyways =(

People get 99's for the new emotes...

lol, just playing.

For me, personally, I was pretty close to 99 woodcut, so I decided to just go for it since the skill capes came out. And now, I'm working on 99 fletch just to trim out my cape, since it was the next closest skill to 99 for me.

I understand what you are saying, about people wanting the capes more than the level, but I just kinda see it as more incentive to get to 99. Personally, I like wearing my Fire Cape a lot more, as it feels like more of an achievement after dieing to Jad 4 times before killing him. :?

It's both, and the added pride of accomplishing something.

The emote actually was one of the reasons that I got my 99 wc cape :XD:

Other reasons for my getting 99 wc include the money that I am going to make after I am done fletching and alching all my logs, all of the mage and fletching esp I will get from the above activity, and the combat stats that the cape gives.

However, I must say that I probably wouldn't have gone for 99 wc if achievement capes had never been released.

i got my 99 stats because i wanted them, not because of the cape. I think people with 99 cooking and fletching arnt anything special... Just another noob with 99 cooking lol

A bit of both, when I got 99 construction I did it for love of the skill, but I also wanted the hawt skillcape. 99 defence was so that I could trim the skillcape indeed but there were other reasons as well (like more survivability at the abyss)

Finally the secrets of goal achieving are revealed! (give my guide a read :^_^: )

3 of my 4 level 99 skills are 99 because I just plain like them and wanted to max them out level wise. Neither the cape nor the like of the skill caused me to get 99 cooking though. It was just something mindlessly easy and fast to do.

Oh, and I'm getting 99 runecrafting mainly because I love it so much. The cape is motivating me a bit as well though.
