Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK and Ireland! USA barely lets in!

Featured Replies

Manhunt 2 has officially been banned by the BBFC and the IFCO. ESRB have given it an AO rating, which means that it's gonna be pretty hard to get your hands on.

Personally, I consider the American's to have taken the best view. This is a game designed for adults, and placing it in the same category as most porn means that only adults can get their hands on it. It would also stop idiot parents from buying the latest games for 'darling Jimmy'.

Anyway, use it as an opportunity to discuss the classification system and whose responsibility it is to ensure that children don't play adult games...

so basically...

if a parent buys the kid something like that, is it the kid's fault if they do what is in the game?

there was an article in the newspaper about how games like 'scarface' and 'dead rising' could turn a small kid violent... you really shouldn't buy your child something like that, especially since a system exists to stop it from happening.

Whens it come out? If they have time, Rockstar will probably try to get it down to M in the states. Or else they will sell about 10 copies, because you'll have to go to an adult book store to get it.

The last time a game was 'banned' in the UK was 10 years ago, for a game called Carmaggedon. After an appeal, it was overturned. I expect the same tbh.
Carmaggedon is weak, it's more kiddie than GTA imo. Same deal with Postal 2 (banned in Australia), throw in car jacking and it's no different to GTA but it's banned :uhh:

Censorship boards make no sense to me sometimes.

God...if Jack Thompson nearly [insert anything here] with Bully, I can't wait 'til he gets to this.

jjroxlu7.jpg

*sigh* Here we go again. Jack Thompson will have a field day with Manhunt 2 and Rockstar whenever the time comes near for the US release..

Anyways. I say the Government should stay out of the video game industry. Obviously, the ESRB and other international companies like the ESRB are there to rate games. So, Grand Theft Auto 3 got an 'M' rating?

Here is an all too familiar scenario..

[hide=To shorten post]Little billy sees GTA on a shelf. 'Oo look mommy, this game is cool! Can I buy it!?'

"Im not sure..M rating..17+...well, you're almost 12, it'll be ok."

So she buys the game. Little Billy plays it..and in about 2 years, kills his best friend. The authorities go over it, the government gets involved..and it is the ESRB's fault for rating the game for the Mom's Ignorance..even though the store clerks clearly specified that the game was rated M for many reasons. As a result of the mom's ignorance, and Billy's poor, easily persuaded and corrupted mind..Rockstar loses millions, and GTA is banned throughout the world.[/hide]

[hide=To shorten post some more]IS THIS RIGHT?! No. The ESRB does it's job by rating the games with that white label on both sides of the cover that sticks out like a bucket of paint on top of a car. They also require store clerks at major retailers to inform parents of the rating and require legal ID to purchase the game. It is the parent's responsibility to ensure that their children are playing games they can handle..NOT the Governments....   [/hide]

I'm done griping now.

There's no way you can effectively ban a videogame these days. There's a gazillion ways to download games, both legally and illegally. This'll only generate more interest for the games, it'll work aversely in the end.

It is COMPLETLY ilegal to suply this game in the uk.

UK, June 19, 2007 - Manhunt 2 on Wii and PlayStation 2 has been banned after the British Board of Film Classification refused to give the game a rating due to its "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone... which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing".

Speaking about the ban, BBFC director David Cooke director said that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2 "would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public".

He went on to explain that it was a decision that hadn't been taken lightly and normally the board would "try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material that contravenes the BBFC's guidelines." However, because the violent themes run so deeply throughout the game the BBFC couldn't recommend cuts that would allow Manhunt 2 a UK release, although Rockstar does have the right to appeal against the decision.

Cooke said: "Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game."

The ban may come as a suprises to some, considering the original Manhunt game - which courted much controversy and also featured violent themes and brutal killings - was given an 18 certificate by the BBFC in 2003. However, David Cooke said that the sequel couldn't be viewed in the same context. "The game's unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game," he explained.

Carmaggedon is the only other videogame to be refused classification by the BBFC. The ban was overturned in 1997 after publisher SCi and developer Stainless Games appealed against the decision and the humans - which you ran over in the game - were replaced with zombies to make the experience less visceral and offensive.

Rockstar has yet to comment on the ban despite several attempts to contact them. We'll keep you updated with further developments throughout the day.

All that will happen is that take 2 will winge about this game. For those who dont know take 2 is the publisher of rockstar games.

They already have winged about an AO rating [adults only] and that it should be M [mature]

I personaly think the minorty have ruined it for the majorty, by murders in the uk BLAMED on this game.

Also carmagedon all over again where theyl change the people in to zombies bla bla bla.

Please, Jack Tompson was ranting about this game months ago. He tried to get Wendy's to stop their Wii promotion (I think it was based on the Pirates 3 game, not sure) on the basis that Manhunt 2 would come to Wii.

And this game isn't going to be reclassified on an appeal. The BBFC said that normally they allow things to be resubmitted upon editing, if whatever they thought was bad had been edited out or toned down. The problem with Manhunt 2 is that there is nothing but violence and gore - if you cut that you don't have a game anymore.

Ah well, I wasn't planning on buying it anyway.

The Wii version actually sounds pretty awesome:

Wii Manhunt 2's elaborated controls make it slightly harder and considerably more viscerally involving than its PS2 sibling.

Melee blows are dealt with jabs of the Nunchuck and the Remote, one for each fist or foot, and you can guard yourself by raising both: beating down a floored opponent with heavy swipes of the Remote has a grim finality. You lean around corners with a tilt of the Nunchuck, and aim a gun by pointing it at the screen (shakily - its high sensitivity is appropriate to Manhunt's extreme tension).

The most significant difference is in the stealth kills. These gruesome interludes are executed with a single button-press on PS2, but on the Wii that's just the beginning of a sequence of timed, prompted gestures with both halves of the controller that mimic the onscreen brutality - jabbing the Remote to stab, jerking both upward to strangle, etc. These become particularly involved with the new environmental kills, and intensify the bloody pay-offs by adding the risk of failure.

Like Zelda [Twilight Princess] Manhunt 2 uses motion-sensing for extra dynamic range, involving the Remote at key moments and letting it melt away to no more than a couple of buttons during downtime. The perfect expression of its savage, imaginative economy is when trying to avoid detectino by a guard peering into shadow; in place of the PS2's quick-fire button prompts, you simply have to hold perfectly still

Nintendo, kiddy? :-k

What is it with Jack Thompson? I gotta go find a couple of those comics....

Anyways, he doesn't even have his facts straight most of the time. Like with Bully, he made it sound like it was going to turn kids into mindless, violent wackos that run around with chainsaws. And then when ESRB got to it, they gave it a T rating :?

Edit: Most of the comics would get taken off, but go search "Jack Thompson" on google images and you'll get the picture.

Edit x2: Found an article on the Bully thing, for anyone who didn't know of it.

"Ok, last post about Jack Thompson, I swear! But I just had to post this little gem. Where to start, where to start? As most of my readers know already, Jack Thompson has some type of vendetta against the video game industry. No one really knows why, but many believe it's for more recognition and votes at the polls. Either way, the guy is a complete wacko and Rockstar (developers of Jack's favorite game, Grand Theft Auto) was nice enough to show everyone just that.

Mr. Thompson and Rockstar have some nice history together. Rockstar creates one of the most violent and controversial games ever and Jack Thompson is right there to try and "protect the children." Jack keeps trying to sue Rockstar and other big name companies claiming their video games are corrupting America's youth.

Well in the newest hiccup between the two, Rockstar games was developing a new game called 'Bully'. Not even knowing anything about it or what it looks like, Jack instantly went on his crusade to try and stop this game from being published. So he does what he does best and tries to sue Rockstar. He goes to court and somehow gets the First Amendment shredded. The judge in the case sort of agrees with Thompson but wants to view the game prior to making a decision.

Meanwhile Thompson keeps spreading hate about the game 'Bully'. In one of his many rants he stats that Bully is a game about being a bully in high school and beating other kids up. Rockstar on the other hand, didn't say a word about the game. They didn't try to defend it or tell anyone what the games about. They just let Jack do his normal thing.

Finally, the game was released and this is where it gets good. The game is not about being a bully at all. Instead in this game you play as a new kid in school where bullies run the place. You job is to fight back and eventually rid or free the school from its bullies. Not only that, but when the ESBR got a hold of the game for review, they decided to give the game a 'teen' rating! Ha!

So for the past year, Jack Thompson screamed to the high heavens about this new horrible game called Bully that would eventually turn all our kids into Satan worshipers. He also tried to get the game banned or stopped from being published. And all this time, Rockstar just kept quiet and let Jack dig his own grave. The game gets released with a 'teen' rating and is nothing like what Jack Thompson said it would be."

Banning videogames, where is this world going too. Although I was a bit shocked when I had a couple of 5 year olds in my shop talking about GTA "Then a woman goes in the car and then it starts shaking, that's really funny".

Yes they do but when do they blame a murder on a film?

Films seem to have some shield that says " cant blame me Bleep! "

Unlike games and music.

Virginia tec massacre : acording to kerrang! they pointed the finger at gnr apatite for destruction album

ah the innocence of youth...

anyway.. I dont see why its banned, just give it an adults only rating and i dont see the problem. I could rant for hours about JT and every other anti-game activist and group.. but I cant be bothered.

I can almost completely 100% guarantee that some whiney mother who believes that even saying stupid is a ticket to washing your mouth out with soap is gonna say that it should be completely banned. She's gonna get moral values involved, and it's gonna be all over the news. She will b*it*h and moan till it is completely banned. It happens EVERY time!

*Throws 2mil in cash on the table* There's my bet that is what will happen.

Remember the bill Number H.R. 554 of the 109th Congressional Party, also known as the "Hamburger Bill"? The one that says you cannot sue fast food corperations for making you fat?

I wonder when they'll pass a law that says you can't sue game companies or try to get their games banned just because some kid happened to play it and then decided to light-up a school for completely unrelated reasons. They're protected under the first amendment as far as I'm concerned, and if a kid is playing it, it's because they have irresponsible parents, not irresponsible game companies.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

- Me!

I doubt there will be an outright ban of the game here in the UK, although with the controversy surrounding the SONY game that includes pictures of Greater Manchester Cathedral, and the new one that's been taken off the shelves for its containment of images of James Bulger being abducted (he was later murdered in Real Life), I would expect the authorites to be more harsher than before.

The game was banned becuase of the killing that occured after the release of number 1 by a 14 year old lad. At the end of the day its the parents fault for buying the kid the game in the first place. Respect the age rating or don't blame the game, nuff said.

logo.jpg

I don't get it...1 person kills someone because of a video game out of the millions of people that played the game, and suddenly the entire world and their overeactive mothers are blaming video games for all the violence in the world :?

70% of the games I own are violent in some way. Am I typing this from prison? No. Have I injured anyone imitating a game? No. :?
