The main reason IMO is because people don't know proper english and saw these words said in this manner over the internet so they picked them up.

Another reason is lazyness?

People are just to lazy to type the whole word.

I doesn't annoy me most of the time, just makes me proud i know english so well even though it's not my first language :D

I agree. The most irritating thing to me though, is the constant abbreviations that are used today. "U" "Y" "R", and my most hated, "wat" and "wut". I mean seriously, how much longer does it take to completely type out the word? An extra second?

It's just pure laziness...

If you believe you came from monkeys, you probably did.

I assume they just see everyone else typing things up like that, and imagining there was nothing wrong with chat-speak, they just happily dive into it... That's what happened to me, anyhow.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

It's rare to find good grammar and spelling online these days. And yes, I know, some people don't speak English as their native language and/or have a medical condition that prevents them from typing well, but even then those people still type very well. A few abbreviations don't bother me, but when I'm on the RuneScape forums, I almost never see people who type well. It's a little more harsh in-game, but it's never too bad. Well, it's always bad on a F2P world.

There is a difference in a few typos ingame and just blatantly spelling something wrong. On the forums, however, there is no excuse for it. You can spellcheck and edit your posts. If you accidentally type, "Hye", thats ok, its a typo. If you type like this, however, you should be muted for a while. "i ned fere stuf plz i porr".

If you want to be taken seriously, examine your grammar and make sure you haven't typed anything wrong. Countless of times on forums I have seen a good idea, sale, etc., go to waste due to the lack of proper grammar. No one can understand it very well so no one pays attention or takes it seriously.

Should it be a crime? Yes, a minor one, but still a crime. Learning proper grammar will only better yourself so why not learn it?

But for truth I get annoyed for people typing like that because you can't understand a darn word from them. Perferrably i rather have a monkey on 5 drugs than a person you can't understand.

This is the thing, literally NO ONE speaks like that. I have no idea where people got the myth from that some people use "leetspeak" to that extent on runescape.

Here's a list of words that irk the [cabbage] out of me:

Plz

Dis

Dat

Wif

Wat

Wot

Kool

Halp

does kool include kewl? i love that word

  • 2 weeks later...

i dont mind them unless i cant understand what they are saying, example:

Buying water runes - perfect

Buy watr runs - acceptable

13uy \/\/473r Ru/\/3z - wtf?

Buy watr runs - acceptable

13uy \/\/473r Ru/\/3z - wtf?

Even taking out just a few letters, whether it be to save time or because of a typing mishap, can confuse people. When chatting with a sibling using a chat application(not in Runescape), I find that when they frequently spell words incorrectly(or use shortcuts) it only confuses me and frustrates me. And I don't think you should be called stupid for not knowing Chatspeak. I don't know of anyone who was raised on that, they've always taught me English at my school. And using bad grammar and making spelling mistakes is a sure-fire way to make people ignore you. It is "unattractive." Who would you rather help out? (Let's just pretend you're a slightly helpful person for this scenario)

Person 1: "Cn u shw me wear Varoc is plz?!?!?!"

Person 2:"Can you show me where Varrock is please?"

The answer is obvious. I believe that typing out your words is a sign of maturity and makes you look smarter too.

Yeah, it's painfully obvious that most of the time the misspelled words are done purposely, in a sad attempt to be "kewl". I throw out the customary "ty" after a trade, rather than type out "thank you." But anyone who has to say "wat" to save themselves a keystroke really needs a keyboarding lesson or two.

how do i seg local guys comment lol :(

In RuneScape, I don't think it's as bad, to a certain extent. Personally, I occasionally use a few abbreviations, but I normally use grammar. The real place it's bad is in the forums. On forums, you've got all the time in the world to type out your post, so why not make sure it's got at least decent grammar?

It depends on how many letters are missing and how many words are misspelled and how they are misspelled.

For example: Hei mei naym iz K1ll3rred005

It wouldn't acceptable.

i understand what you are saying and no one should be called stupid for not knowing chat language but since person 2 looks smarter and more mature that would mean person 1 is most likely younger and more in need of guindece from an rs seinor. ......i think :uhh:

Yes, I definitely agree, it is not hard to spell a simple word out on a computer. There should be no tolerance...I get people come up to me all the time asking for stuff..."gime fre stof plz"..absolutely horrible..

I agree. but why do ppl have a problem with kool or plz? yeh dat tat skimmy is annoying. R u spelling perfectionists or something. and this is more of a rant not a debate

lashan_r.png

Note: some of my stats aren't in the hiscores and i only update em every once in a while.

It's like chavs have attacked the internet. I for one support good grammar. The only time you might see me mess up is when I'm talking quickly and it has the letter "g" in it (because the "g" on my keyboard is messed up)

Sometimes it can be because a person is from another country, then i feel for them, but it's those who just talk in 1337 speak really hack me of, because they talk in that way thinking it's cool :shame:

So i say we get some grammar sheriffs in! (Just a little comic from the internet i found)

off topic but woot im in 2 peoples siggys >.>

Make that 3!

I sometimes type "teh" on accident and don't bother to correct it. Other than that, I usually type with perfect grammar, even up to the point where I use apostrophes in my contractions. However, there is a difference between a mostly grammatically correct sentence with one or two typographical errors and "wat is tat wep? its kool, can i c in trad plz??" If someone talks to me like that, I either act as though I didn't see what he said or I call him a noob and then ignore him. In my opinion, despite that "noob" is overused, someone is a noob if they type like that. Peoples' typing habits are the first thing I use to judge them when I meet them, before levels or anything else. I am often known to be one of the nicest, most sociable high levels people meet, that is if they prove to me that they are not immature and illiterate. Often, one's typing habits reflect his or her maturity.

kingmerik999.png

Tis the great kingmerik!

Things I don't mind:

-Chatspeak whilst pking, after all, no sense in dying while spelling out 'Greater Demon Ruins'...

-Occasionaly accidental typos, I.E.: 'Come to Lumbrigde...'

Things I do mind:

-'leetspeak'

-moronic drivel, as in: 'p00mig m33 mak3 d00d13 1n m3s m0uh7!11!!'

-'plz c0em 2 teh faly 4 to maek hapl 4 th3 m0rchint'

Basically, idiots bug me...
