Well, im an english lit and language student so in theory i shouldn't be spelling many words incorrectly, but it doesn't bother me if some people can't spell well. As long as they make some attempt to spell things correctly instead of that ridiculous "leetspeak" crap and variations of words just to sound "cool". Its ok if you're saying half these annoying words as a joke, i do that often but if it gets OTT i'll get annoyed.

I completely agree with this. I've become so good at typing that even when I misspell "the" as "teh," half the times I backspace through two entire new words just to correct it as it bothers me so much that I made a mistake.

 

 

 

I do this all the time! I sometimes notice a mistake at the beginning of a PM or message I'm typing, and instead of pressing enter, I press backspace. And if I ever do make a mistake, I send a correction (eg. *the, not teh). It really ticks me off when you hear the people who say "yo dud wtf r u doin?". It is actually more challenging to me to type like that than it is to type properly.

I'm a lot more lenient on foreign/non-native speakers of English when it comes to typing and whatnot. Even I've made the occasional 'teh' error when it comes to typing the, and various small errors.

 

 

 

I can't forgive it when it's someone that's native of the language...c'mon, at least put some effort into showing us you know the language...

I backspace any amount to correct a spelling error if I see one, that's just how I am. I think things like ty, nty, nfs, lol, wb, brb, afk, bbs etc. are acceptable abbreviations in the world of e speak. I mean, you'd have to be a complete pedant to insist on writing etcetera instead of etc., exempli gratia instead of e.g., id est instead of i.e. and so forth.

 

Also, I haven't seen anyone saying "buying/selling dragon scimitar" in quite some time. So desriptives like d scimmy, d long, addy large, possibly even rune pl8 would be acceptable to me. :

 

 

 

If you started typing sentences like "Would all clan members rendezvous on server number 99 in Edgeville bank at two-thirty post meridiem Greenwich mean time please?", you'd spend most of your time typing.

 

 

 

"Clan meet w99 edgy 2.30gmt" would suffice. Even without a capital 'E' in 'edgy! :shock: :shock: :shock:

 

 

 

I do agree that all this "wer joo get wip? iz ownge" is stupid. I automatically assume I'm being addressed by a ten year-old. -.-

i use thoes words quite abit but i never use leet speak. i use them in game because i am normaly typing over a chair back so it is easier to do that so my hand don't go to sleep.also about people saying kool. i say that because i got into the habbit of it as when i started playing nearly 3 years ago the censor wouldn't let you say cool so it is habbit now which i try to get out of but when you have been doi8ng for 3years its quite hard. i also have rubbish spelling and make lots of typos so please excuss me if i have done any of them.

Ok, seriously, why make butchered English a crime? It takes the life out of foolish players. It isn't our business about how people spell as some people use them as shortcuts (kinda lazy at times).

As a bad speller my self (dyslexic) I hold the stance that as long as people attempt to communicate in propper english I wont hold any spelling errors agains them.

 

 

 

Leet and abreviations however are what annoy me, it's lazy and shows no effort to communicate.

One thing i've actually found out with alot of player whos do use poor grammar, and which you do need to be careful of, is that English is not their first language.

 

 

 

For example, alot of Dutch and Polish players use Runescape, so do find it easy to short-cut words for memory.

 

When players start to rant at them for this, its not nice... They feel like they're being penalised for being a different language- I know this from when i wrongly accused a Polish player- of whom is now a good friend of mine.

 

 

 

However, the example i use is for just a small, small portion of Runescape. Alot of English, literate players are using poor grammar as they're 'lazy'. Many younger players use AIM and MSN, so when they play a MMORPG, see the chat box much like an MSN box.

 

 

 

As an older player, i rarely interact with less-intelligent players, so my experience with these kinds of 'lazy' people is limited... But i see why people get frustrated.

 

 

 

I mean, come on... It takes about 3-5 seconds longer to turn;

As for the first point I have always felt the opersite, by using L33t and shortened words you are stoping less fluent people from reading it..... as they are only able to read proper english.

I myself feel that it is stupid to chat in such an abbreviated form, but when the chat line is so many characters you have to make some shortcuts.

I really feel sorry for the text chatters, because when they grow up and get into the real world, they won't be able to type correctly, and heaven knows that even the most menial jobs require SOME typing knowledge.

 

 

 

Learn correctly now, and life will be much easier.

This really depends in what grade of grammar faults it's about.

 

 

 

Myself, I do often spell some longer words wrong, or make some typos when i'm writing too fast.. And the punctation, it's hard to remember how to do it, when the rules for it are different than in my country...

 

 

 

But as so many else have said, misspelling (or mis-spelling, mispelling or what it now is) a word because it's long, or just because you don't know excactly how it's written isn't really a problem. But when you start to type simple words like "you", "plate", and "please" "u", "pl8" and "plz" then it's just annoying, because they do it because they think that they are using less effort on it. Now, everyone here, how much longer does it take to say you instead of u? It's nothing. And if you instead offer those seconds that you'll earn during a lifetime spelling u instead of you, it would be better to just get a habit in writing words out. A really good thing, as people at school and work would probably not like you to use this "short forms"

I accept it, however players that use this kind of language are sort of... dumb :anxious: so I don't speak to them much. I'll only say "brb", for exemple, when something has to be done quickly, not leaving me the time to say "I'll be right back." which I do, when I can. It's very annoying when people call you a no-life when you dont misspell astonishing.

 

 

 

I eventually get a typo on my chat -- usually, I get more on weekends, because the keys on this damn laptop have to be pushed deep.

 

 

 

So as long as it's not excessive crap like: "k00l b0w m8 (4n I 8uy pl0x", it's just a "u", a "cya" or a "g2g", I'm ok with it.I do like conversations with Wenlok better -- they seem to flow :P

 

 

 

The foreign language thing is something else though, if they speak funny, I will ask them if english is their main language, and see if I can speak in their main language (german, un pocito spanish and french). Otherwise, I know that they're challenged and that instead of making them feel penalised, I should help them speak english better, and quite often, these guys make good progress.

I'm don't mind people who mis spell words by accident but I get annoyed with people who use slang words etc... and do it on purpose.

I have the feeling of (excuse me) that those who can't be bothered to type out their *damn* words are those who use the internet solely for chatting and playing RS. Not to be prejudice, but that's just a view I got. Anyone that uses the internet for something where they are exposed to proper spelling will after a while be affected and take after it.

Totally agree with you. Leetspeak does not benefit you in any way, it just makes it harder for the people you're conversing with.

Incorrect spellings in Runescape are only a crime when the incorrectly spelled word becomes a word that Jagex is trying to sensor, or somehow becomes a put-down to another player. Otherwise, all misspellings are just really annoying and confusing. I am completely supportive of everyone using proper spelling and grammar during Runescape, but the failure to do so is certainly not a crime. Though I may want to "put justice upon you" if you choose to chat on Runescape with no care as to how you spell your words. :twisted:

Yes, it is certainly bad grammar, looks horrible, and makes the user sound/appear as a complete idiot. However, it seems to me that some of these are used to be funny (Imagine someone screaming HALP ME! in real life) and also they could be used to get the point across by typing less. This seems plausible, only at the cost of what makes us humans different from every other creature on this Earth. :? :wall:

Intentionally misspelled words in large quantities are the most annoying, as it leet. However, I do not see a problem with some things. I am rather quiet usually, so rarely do I ever say more than "gf", "lol", "cya", "g2g", "np", and "ty" in public. I use proper spelling and grammar if I do with to speak in a matter to convey a meaningful idea, but usually for the sake of convenience, common abbreviations are fine in my book. I use AIM and google chat often, so that skews my views, of course.

Whilst I agree with much that has been said here concerning certain abbreviations, the original question was one of spelling and not grammar.

I was always lead to believe that language was a means of communication. Over the years many English words have altered their spelling, does that mean they are now incorrect?

 

 

 

Can you understand both 1 and 2 above? If so, then language has done its job, communication has been made and understood and everyone is happy (except the pedant who requires everyone to spend half their RS life typing correctly)

 

 

 

Having said all this, I have to agree with the posters who complain about "leet" and changing one letter in a word without making it shorter (e.g. kool), even though, as in my above premise, they can be understood.
