The US Health Care system

Well I just got done watching the movie Sicko last night and it got me thinking the United States health care has some serious flaws. They deny people coverage, and leave people with huge hospital bills.

I know from somewhat personal experience when my grandfather has a stroke a couple years ago. It left my grandmother in huge debt and the insurance company only payed for half of it. Luckily her children (including my father) helped her out.

Granted the movie over glorified the health care systems of Britain, France, and Canada a bit but they are still better than the US. The United States should have the same belief like them no matter who you are, how much money you make, you should have free health care.

What are your guys opinions on this? If you personally live in a country with free health care, please tell me what you think about it.

The problem with the U.S.' Health Care system is that their main goal is to make money, not to help people.

It's pretty sad.

In Soviet Russia, glass eats OTers.

Thats what I forgot in my main post.

The health care system should be non profit. It's awful that they would rather have somebody die then pay for their treatment.

Your grandfather is a woman?

American health care is better controlled and more higher class than the UK one.

No, unfortunately my grandfather pasted away a few months after that and left his wife, my grandmother to pay the bill.

What healthcare system? Ok, seriously, it sucks hard, almost as bad as whats been done to Social Security, damn rich boomers are sucking away the money of everyone else... Lol, from what I've heard, one of the bigger problems the Canadian border patrol has is the number of Americans trying to sneak across for free treatment. -.- I hate living in this country.

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

Too bad it doesn't actually help people.

It boggles the mind how the most prosperous country in the world has such an expensive healthcare system. It doesn't have to be free, but it could be made to be a lot more affordable, that people must realise, even without the need for Michael "Look at me! I'm Controversial!" Moore.

Well do you expect anything for free in the Capital Country of Capitalism?

We live in a Capitalist country...Don't believe politicians when they say they're going to find a way for cheaper/free helathcare...They know it won't happen.

The goal is to make money. They charge you $20k to have a baby, and $12k for a broken toe. $250k for a new heart, and $25k for reconstructive plastic surgery after you get your face smoked by a bus.

And they like it that way.

I'm a very healthy person...I think free healthcare would be nice, but it's also iffy for me because I am so healthy...I'd be paying extra taxes for fat, stupid, lazy-assed people who go to the doctor every 3 weeks because they weigh 400 pounds and can't "figure out whats wrong". Before free health care, we need a better food system, period. No more high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING (go look in your kitchen, it's in 90% of your food and it's pure bad-as-hell-for-you), no more deep fried snickers bars smothered in fat and extra chocolate.

After people stop being fat [wagon] (not likely, some people are even proud of being fat pigs), then you can get free healthcare. I'm not paying extra taxes and stuff for fat unhealthy people to go get checked out every 6 hours when I myself NEVER go to the doctor. I've been to the doctor about twice in my entire life and both were for chicken pox when I was like 10 - the only time I've ever been sick.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

Don't glorify Canada's health system too much. Let's say you make 40 000 CAD a year, nearly haft of it will go away in taxes, and for everything you buy you have a 15% tax in most provinces. Your left with a lot less money than if you lived in the USA, but you're covered if you get sick, or need an operation, but depending on your operating you can wait months, even more than a year, like for a kidney operation. For other things, you get operated very soon, like eyes or andrology/gynegology because they're not a lot of people on the waiting lists in those domains.

In that sense, it's quite clear to see why there's such a courtroom culture in the U.S.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'll get around to it. If healthcare was made free though, would doctors still make the same amount of money? From what I understand expenses would be spread into taxes so they'd make money that way, but would this effect insurance companies or doctors' salaries?

Yes, it's a shame our health care isn't free like our neighbors up north.

I feel bad for the soldiers. I've seen hospitals they've had to go into (via TV) and they're not in the best conditions. In my opinon soldiers who fight for the country should have the best damn treatment that the army can afford - and they can spend a lot of that on fighting a war that can't be won.

Exactly. One of the reasons we have soldier's dying out there is because of lack of medical treatment other than a surgeon with little more than maybe a knife, bandages, ointments, stitches, and maybe some other things if you're lucky.

I don't have any idea how it could be fixed (I'm not a thinker), but both American and Canadian healthcare systems are seriously flawed.

In America, your loved ones die and the doctor is there with a bill. You have to deal with your loved ones/self being sick and dieing, AND the added healthcare costs. You might not get an operation because you don't have the money.

On the other hand, we have the Canadian system. Sure, it's universal, but it gets abused hardcore. People go to the doctor for such pointless things, it just wastes their time and our money. And it's because of this that people have to wait so long on operations - our hospitals are clogged up with people who don't need it as much as those who really do.

So until there is unlimited resources and medical health professionals, no system of healthcare is going to be perfect.

Finland is socialist, so 100% health care coverage until you're 18 but 22% Value Added Tax.

I just ordered a computer from Dell, it will come to CA where I will pick it up, I can get them for 1/3 the price there.

Healthcare here is free too, it's good, no matter who you are, you can go in and be looked after. Not get into a stable condition then pushed out the door.

But it isn't 'free'. It's where higher taxes etc etc come into play.

What do you expect..Our healthcare is free

I watched a movie ages ago about some boy and his dad..his dad cant pay for a new heart (notu sure) or something, he cant pay for an operation so he holds people hostage in the hospital till they can give him the treatment for free..

Ah yes, our American universities are based on the capitalist system of making money, and they sure do suck, don't they?

Sure, free healthcare would be great, but as has already been explained by other posters, both sides have their advantages; it's not black and white here -.- .
