The lost art of Runescape?

Featured Replies

I was killing Hill giants today when I heard a shout from a level 40 saying "anyone here craft?". I duly say "yes" (Though I'm not a hardcore crafter as my level is only 41  ). The player then quizzes me on how a rune is crafted (actually not attrubted to the crafting skill I know but hey why not...) So I explain how a rune is crafted I am thanked and he leaves with me feeling good about myself.

However, that then causes me to be bombarded with people asking "how is a ring made?" or "how do you make leather armour?" or "how is a pot made?". Now don't get me wrong this isn't a rant I do like helping people, so know we come to the crux of the post, is crafting is becoming a lost skill in Runscape; are people (or at least just f2p as I can't vouch for members) ignoring crafting for more lucrative and higher 'status' skills like combat? Is it becoming the lost skill that most people are leaving to the extremely lower levels? As the crafting guild always seems rather empty when I walk past.

Furthermore, Might this have something to do with more people tempted to purchase their "ready-made" materials/items like leather and jewellery then make them from scratch?

Just thought I would see what other people think, all comments welcome! (and I apoligise for the length and use of fancy words I tend to waffle after a while)

Woodcutting does not raise your combat level because most people do not play as yew trees.

Well, honestly, for the longest time, I had no idea how to craft. I eventually had to look it up in the Kbase because all people would do is say, "Wow noob, you don't even know how it is made!? Quit now!"

I guess it is almost the lost skill for a while.

tfssig.png

I got mine high enough to enter the guild and then stopped for a while. For a few months all of my crafting experience came as a result of cutting gems I got from random events and monster drops. However, after getting to 66 crafting, I went on a little crafting spree that got me to 71. Now, I am using all of my gems almost as soon as I get them.

As for other people, most don't seem to know anything about it, of those I have encountered.

hmm interesting maybe just unlucky group of nubs but i dont know :? most ppl know how to craft.... :-s

Let your yellow mellow.

it might become a lost skill, but hey; the guild is a lost guild, almost every place to train crafting is better than the crafting guild

jagex can do 2 things:

1. update the crafting guild (a bank and/or furnace would help)

2. add the crafting skill to turtorial island, so 'scapers will know from lvl 3 how to craft. Oh, and a crafting tutor in lumby

It's just that the people asking you havn't been around that long :s

anybody who has knows damn well how to do those things

I'm going to hazard a guess and say you're f2p

It's because the ways to make money with crafting are quite hard and in f2p it's almost useless, only useful for making stuff for yourself. I will get it to 60 though in the next days :D

You're being watched.

I'd saying crafting is as farming and construction are to members.

It is so diverse and 'complex' to train comapred to the regualr point and click skills that players who are new to it and or have never tried it just don't understand it

There is another new art, buying money from gold websites.

The average layer is getting bored of a game; they̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ll quit or buy money to advance their skills in the game, effectively cheating. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s why there are so many bots in the game, there is a huge demand for items for hard RL cash, if that market went then so would the autoers.

I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t think the teenagers/adults who buy this care about the community, nor do they care about others. :(

99 Woodcutting goal: Complete! :D

It's not as if there was any real money to be gained from crafting. Any profit you could make with crafting revolves around buying enourmous quantities of either haft keys, or dragonhides, and both are very hard to find in large quantities. And when they are large quantities, they're too expensive, and there's absolutely no profit to be made. You can sell glories, they sell nicely. Or you could try and sell dragonhide sets, but good luck  Tbh, you might aswell just rc, less hasstle.

Oh, and a crafting tutor in lumby

There is one. If you want to speak to him, and/or get advice, go to the 2nd floor (with the spinning wheel) of Lumbridge castle and you should find him there.

Other data was removed when acoount got hacked...

my crafting level was 1 when i became p2p, them i got into spinning flax and got alot of exp from that

Check out my 50M+ Blog

The skill requires buying raw material to get levels and usually you turn out losing money which makes it a not so pretty skill. Alot of skills are ignored because they are boring, costly and maybe even stupid to level.

Bit it's basically people are lazy and want everything handed to them. Nobody wants to sit there and smith or mine or craft the same stuff for hours on end. They are just not "fun" skills.

The difference between Combat and Crafting, is the fact that you can get straight into Combat if you have a Weapon. But with Crafting, you need various materials/equipment before you can even think about leveling.

So, a lot of people can't find the motivation to Craft straight away, and neglect it for a while and think about other things, such as Combat, Woodcutting, Fishing, ETC. Skills which you can get into straight away, just by obtaining 1 item.

That's my opinion Crafting, and from personal experience, I crafted to a high level when I had enough money to afford it. I wouldn't want to get stuck into a Skill if I could only level 20 levels or so. Instead, I would wait until I had enough money to raise to an appropriate level of which to my satisfaction. And to what I'm capable of.

Interesting topic, I must say :-k.

It's because the ways to make money with crafting are quite hard and in f2p it's almost useless, only useful for making stuff for yourself. I will get it to 60 though in the next days :D

That right there is why Firemaking and Crafting are considered "useless." Everybody is always after the quick buck.

Back in RS1, I was a jeweler. I would mine gold in Karamja, and then smelt it in Falador, then make gold rings, and sell them to the shop in Port Sarim.

I think in F2P the lost skill is rcing>.>

I could see crafting though, not far behind with rcing. The reason is, it takes some time and effort to level it, if you don't but hides, or if you even know how to level it.

Most F2Pers aren't quite to bright, and most of them haven't been playing long enough to fully understand how to come up with idea's on training(I don't mean disrespect, but its true).

That's why they get to level 20-30 and just stop.

Although some could just not know what crafting is for, and just leave it for another time, and forget about it...

it might become a lost skill, but hey; the guild is a lost guild, almost every place to train crafting is better than the crafting guild

jagex can do 2 things:

1. update the crafting guild (a bank and/or furnace would help)

Exactly, the furnace would be helpful, but not a bank. There are a handful of gold-mining autoers as there is

mememe513.png

I have the same problem with peolple asking me those questions, other common questions are:

How is armour made?

How is mod made?

How is zezima made?

How is baby made?

etc.

fudgy999 is mean :-( throw rocks at him.

I thank all of the skill guides so much because I think that without those, runescape would be so much harder and nobody would really know what to do to level things up. I mean think about it. Playing runescape with only the knowledge you know they give you at the tutorial island. A level 99 runecrafter would be as rare as someone beating Zezima now.

Maybe this was a way that runescape was supposed to be challenging and not time consuming.

Even though the skill guides are great, why doesn't everybody use them?? Same with the world map. Maybe the skill guides can be excused because as someone new, you wouldn't know where to find them but the world map is just a millimeter above the screen you play runescape on.

Primeaction.jpeg
Not all F2Pers are beggars or scammers, some are respected members, but these respected people are over-populated by these beggar and scammers.

The crafting guild definetly needs a bank and a furnace. That guild is dead. I can sometimes keep it alive...

Hmm yes I have noticed that most low levels, say under 60?, sometimes higher, do not know how to craft. I think a simple solution for this is to add a crafting guide to tutorial island, although there is one upstairs in Lumbridge Castle. But I suppose as this would mean an F2P update, which kind of means we can forget about everything I mentioned, Ok? :-k

Its nice to help people once in a while, but when tons of people keep asking you stupid questions it gets out of hand. Usually I can answer all their dumb questions but I really, really, hate it. But I still love my 65 Crafting.

crafting doesnt have clear uses to most and isnt simple thiers lots of options with it. so lots of people do not know how to craft.

Huh? Mystics and dhides are still at large, f2p, well, it's not as big a money maker.
