The Emerging Runescape Intellectual Class

Recommended Posts

Beyond the casual kiddies, beyond the hardcore grinders, there exists people who not only play RuneScape, but think RuneScape -- those who not only train smartly, but discuss smartly, and act smartly. These players are emerging, their numbers growing; they have always been with us -- from the fansite pioneers, to the pixel artists, to the event teams, to the newsletter publishers -- and becoming ever more prominent. They share the common trait of love for our game RuneScape and their willingness to share the joy of the game. They use their time productively, creatively, going above and beyond the superficial and dive deep down to the details, methodology, the strategies behind the game.

Its surprising how much goes on kinda unnoticed concerning fansites, stuff that is taken for granted. Not everyone will stop to think how these forums got put up, how much time and effort are put into things like TET events and skill calcs and tables, just for an online game.

Great job and keep it up, i say!

Well, can I be included in this? I play to play and also I talk about the basic concepts of some of the theorys of black hole physics, the 4th dimensional concepts, fusion technology, anti-matter, and the advances in current nano and micro-technology.

Yes, I really do have to thank this emerging intellectual class..

Their mature posts, conversation and witticisms make Runescape bearable. { Especially as a F2per. }

Intellectual is slightly pretensious(?) though. Wouldnt mature and insightful be a better description?

Who ever you are, cheers. ::'

It's great that we have these kind of members, but it's not like they're emerging suddenly now. They've always been around. They haven't started suddenly exponentially increasing in the game. If this thread is just about giving praise to them fine, but I don't get why you think out of nowhere there became an influx of these kind of members.

I think influx is the wrong word, merely that their prescence is more noticeable in contrast to increasingly immature and silly actions of todays Runescape players.

As such, their contributions are percieved by more Forum users/'Scapers,

and as such they appear to be increasing as a percentage of RS players.

Also Adam, praise where due. <3:

I haven't started playing yet, but I can already see that most players will probably be smart like the community at Tip.It Forums.

I created this new specially designed scam detection software i've code named "common sense", it's saying its a scam.

No, thats called unwarented optimisem. Try to be about 20% more pesimistic in the future to avoid dissapointment (Actually I think I mean 20% more cynical but just go for a bit more of both to be safe <.< )

Actualy there are an amazing number of smart and interesting people who play, but they tend to be quiet to avoid notice by the masses of loud morons who are also very numerous. The people who arent shoutign out random things, who go about there buisness tend to be the best in my experiance. We complain about teh bad people alot, but thats becaus ethe more numerous smart people are doing everyhtign they can to avoid drawing attention.

X2. This thread seems to have no actual purpose other than an attempt to make a name for oneself or possibly some light brown-nosing.

How about:

Runescape Wiki

As with any wiki, thanks to open editing, it has it's problems (which have included plagiarising from fansites by unscrupulous editors), and some pretty major bustups from admin's gone crazy.

In the main, it is a pretty intelligent place, though given to occasional disputes on the direction that should be taken. The plus of a user edited wiki, is that with good user support, it could be first with any reports, since edits go straight online.

There have always been intellectual people playing the game, you just need to know where to find them.

Exactly. If you are referring to an increased amount of tools on fansites as a sudden increase in the intelligence levels of your average player, then you, sir, are a fool;

A) Draynor having more tools avaliable to use indicated they have a person willing to spend time thinking of, and creating new tools to use. It reflects nothing on the RS population;

B) Surely an increased amount of tools avaliable hints that the average IQ value of an RS player is actually lowering, otherwise they wouldn't need those tools in the first place. Of course, that's complete rot.

I have strong opposition to using the word 'class' as well. RuneScape isn't a classist soceity. It's not like the real world where you have several distinct classes (the proletariat vs bourgeoisie, for example) - the economic situation is the same for everyone is RS. Thus there are no 'classes'.

Yeah, even in game geographic distribution can demonstrate this.

Your theory works to a certain extent for job barriers creating economic divisions. People are free to move around as they please but some choose to take a different route then others. You are correct in saying that everyone gets the same opportunities however not everyone will choose the same things.

Some people can go for pking while others choose to only focus on skills. Therefore, there is a "class" system in runescape however, unlike real life and you have are correct about this, people are free to move throughout the various classes with a lot more freedom than in real life.

Those are the job divisions each forming lots of little classes. There are 2 other divisions that I can think of that form classes:

personal skills: Not everyone can have the same achievements because some people are just more patient than others

Parental controls. Not everyone is given the same amount of time to play per day and not everyone can get membership.

Very good points Solidus, except I think your terminology is a bit off. What you are referring to in effect is social mobility - the ability for a person in one class to move to the class higher up in the heirachy. As you've mentioned, there are no actual in-game restraints holding people to the hypothetical 'class' to which they belong, therefore because of that, social mobility in RS is high. I would argue so high, that the whole concept of 'classes' ceases to exist, due to the ease with which I (for example) could switch from skilling to PKing, thus the barriers between classes simply dissolve.

I link 'class' to opportunity, not merely the way in which someone acts, lives or behaves like you seem to see it. Everyone is RS has equal opportunity, except for a few exceptional rule-breakers and those who can only come on RS for a strict amount of time. Even then though, the possibilities open to them are exactly the same; it just takes longer to get there.
