And the speed advantage between the longsword and the maul is less than the maul/godsword and the whip... So that further leads me to believe the maul would be a better choice, unless you have a divine/elysian.

Dude in the back was safespot maging with fire bolt with no armour aside from a black cavalier, glory, and a skillcape. Also saw a guy there earlier with accumulator, bcp, tassets, glory, and a bgs. The worst part? They were all over 120 combat. Inefficiency at its best!
