I'm pretty sure it's magic based. Of course they are seperate attacks, that's pretty obvious. It's just that the magic attack can be dealt with by protecting from magic, and the ranged attack can be dealt with protecting from ranged. WITHOUT protection prayers however, they will both use your magic defence to decide to whether it's a hit or miss.

Look at the Tip.It guide. It says even while DHing to protect from ranged, not magic! Then rag on this guy for protecting range in Bandos. =/
