Facebooks, Myspaces etc.

I was just wondering what people thought of these in general.

Myspaces are a lot less 'safe' than a facebook, because with facebook there are a lot of options letting you choose who can view your page.

I personally think they can be a great place to arrange stuff with friends, and even just store pictures of yourself.

Myspaces can be dangerous, since I don't think you can make it so only certain people can view your page (or you couldn't when i last checked), but with facebook you can set it so only friends can see your page.

Anyway, do you think websites like these are a good thing or a bad thing? Which one is your favorite?

Just curious to see what people think.

EDIT: 10000th topic!

I use facebook every day as means of political campaigning, and for new forums. Plenty of discussion boards there.

Um, I've also networked with quite a few people, have found job opportunities, lawyers have helped me prepare my case against the honor court, and I've met some amazing people.

Hell, last night I was on the phone for 3 hours with 6 people from one facebook group.

Pfft, I found an old friend I hadn't seen in years through Facebook. Greatest internet tool evah :o.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

MySpace is soooo 2 years ago. Laggy, spammed with adverts, full of comment spammers and giving people the change to edit the design of the pages... ick! Some of the worst examples of html vomit ever created are myspace profiles.

Facebook however is clean and simple, if you dont count annoying apps (which are easily minimised or completly removed by greasemonky scripts) and the privacy options are great (still needs more work tho). I use Facebook everyday to keep in touch with rl friends and organising things. I have a few internet friends that I trust added but most of them are "limited" and cant see most of what I put on there.

Myspace appears to be the thing for the "cool" middle-schoolers, Facebook seems like it's for more mature high schoolers and college students. I plan on getting one soon, never getting a Myspace though...My sister has a Facebook, and I've seen some of the functions. Looks pretty cool.

Been using both for a while....Myspace hit its low a year or so ago but seems to have taken control of the spam issue and has restored itself back to semi-respectability.

Facebook on the other hand was always purported as the more sophisticated alternative and actually required a valid school email address to log in. They have since opened it to everybody and a number of issues have arisen since, such as the overuse of "applications".

Anyway, I'm sick of all of the unfounded hate on Myspace, it almost seems like the "hip" thing to do lately is to actually not have a Myspace, and hate on it, pretty hypocritical if you ask me. Saying its just for scene kids and 14 y/os is getting a little old.

A lot of you people are stereotypical.

I have a Facebook and a Myspace. I find that Myspace is easier to use then Facebook, really.

And I don't use Myspace because I think it's the "hip" thing to do. I use it so I talk to my friends. That's it. I haven't edited my Myspace since like, I got it. I do occasionally put Explosm comics on it though. :D

I have both. I rarely use them. I only keep my myspace because my older brother uses it, and not facebook, and I want to stay in touch with him.

I am not sure I like facebook either, but all my friends throw fits when I make my account inactive.

Good social tools, if you ask me.

I just don't understand the point of those sites. I mean if you want to talk to friends use the phone, instant messenger, or god forbid you actually go see them. Now if they're far away that's understandable. If you want to show them pictures and they don't live near you you can email them.

Seems like a cool little fad to me. One that's been going on for a while now. Seems pretty pointless.

It's plenty useful for getting in touch with old friends.

As far as myspace goes, the only reason I really dislike it is for the reason Matt stated -- the pages are horrible. Seriously, you try and visit a page and get blared with the most obnoxious scene music imaginable, and let your eyes bleed to some crappy image tiled over the background with red hot letters for text.

Ugh.

Most myspace accounts are a mess. People who dont know HTML just copy bits and pieces.

Facebook is way cleaner. Best features is the wall and the tag with the photo albums. Use it everyday. It's a really easy way to keep in contact with other peeps.

I can't really stick MySpace or Facebook. The people on them are too self-centred. It's all about who's got the most page views, or who's got the best photos, or who's friends with the latest local band. Secondly, most of these people are only on those sites 'coz they're bored so they're not really that interesting to talk to anyway.

If people want to talk to me, they know where I live, they know my mobile number, they know my email address. Why do I need some website to organise my social life for me, or put my life story up on a page in order to attract new friends? I'm an adult for Christ's sake.

I never made friends on Facebook. I meet them and then add em on FB afterwards. I trim my friends list all the time too. I've had it for years now but I only have like 110 or so people there. I think some people just add everyone they can recognize

Yeah I do that a lot too :) I went to a totally different middle school and high school than any of my elementary friends so I didn't see them after 5th grade, but thanks to Facebook I've been able to talk to a lot of them. I actually just found out one of my old friends got his band signed to Victory Records

I don't really use MySpace though. I have an account but it only gets checked one someone is like "I wrote something on your MySpace!"..

Exactly my point of view. The whole Myspace/Facebook thing jut doesn't make sense.

I don't have any profile on any site besides tif. sorry guys, but I'm not in the mood to get murdered by old men claiming to be Miley Cyrus. ;)

Every one of my friends besides a certain person I know has a myspace. the two of us try to be rebels who stay away from that corner of the internet.

But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Apparently a lot of people say it. I own.

Absolutely must +1 to everything in that post except the adult part, legally I'm not.

It's funny how some people can't read/hear that and comprehend it. I used to say something along those lines every time someone asked me if I had a myspace and most of the time they would just be like "get one anyways." I did make one 2-3 years ago, just to see what all the hype was about, but I quickly got bored of it and found it pathetic, and thus my current view on them came to be.

I do use instant messengers though, mostly because it's more private, easier, and if you're sending something to someone, they must be online, else you wouldn't be able to talk to them. Plus, quite a few of my friends have AIM on their phones, so instead of wasting minutes, I just message them from my computer (or any computer, with the online messenger things), that is until I get texting.

You were a couple years ago.

Hmm... I wonder how one goes about throwing someone out a window in a mystic fashion :-k

The mental image for that is freaking awesome.
