Runescape in the mmorpg community

Now ive quit for awhile and was looking for a new game, so i jumped over to mmorpg.com forums looking for another game. There i told em i played runescape and stuff and was looking for a similar game, i got many replies like welcome to the real gaming community or welcome to MMORPG'S, it kinda confused me what they were talking about.So after spending a good 2 weeks in the forums ive come to see what runescapes real reputation is in the mmorpg world, and it really set me off how biased it was. All runescape was to these people was click and stare at your character as he gains exp,worst community, bad graphics...It dosent even deserve to be called a game. Now theres also alot of comments saying that look around you, theres way better games out now. Now theres also this thing...

 

 

 

I've played it since RSC, im guessing since 2000.

 

 

 

Main reason I liked it was staking, and Pk'ing... and occasionaly merchanting.

 

 

 

Now that all three are gone, so is the game.

As you can see, if i hadnt been playing runescape before, i actually wouldve been the same kid spamming the forums like this.Actually now that i think about it if runescape wasnt the first game i played, with no experience at all with other mmorpg's i really wouldnt have gotten the same feeling about runescape too, i wouldnt have really understood what the game was and how everything worked, what skills really meant. If i had played other games i would jus log on kill one thing and laugh at runescape.

 

 

 

So what do you think?if you didnt start off with runescape,werent open minded about it, or didnt have any help at all... would you still be here?

I play alot of games, and i've always done it.

 

I keep playing RS because it's cheap, kinda fun and you can play it anywhere, even on a bad computer.

 

I haven't played WoW or AOC or something else of an mmorpg, because most of them costs way too much, 20$ a month or something?

 

I'm waiting for DB3.

 

 

 

And i don't care what other people say about RS, it's their oppinion.

Runescape is more enjoyable than other games because of the whole skill system in my opinion. I've always been the type to love leveling up whether it be on a game like Pokemon or Final Fantasy. I guess I'm just a perfectionist when it comes to video games. No other online game really even competes with Runescape when it comes to that, so that's why I stayed.

The biggest problem with most mmos is that after you reach about level 20 they just become endless monster grinds. I do not enjoy that kind of gaming.

Another big plus side to RuneScape is the fact that it doesn't take up a huge amount of space on your computer. I have played many other mmos on my old computer, but the laptop I now use doesn't really have the space to operate effectively with many other games on my computer.

 

 

 

The biggest downside to RuneScape, and the main reason why much of the MMORPG community looks down on it and WOW, is that it is too popular. As a result of it not taking up huge amounts of space (and being free), people who aren't serious gamers will play it. This means that ou get people who don't understand what an MMORPG is - and will spend the whole time talking about football, where they live etc. - which is really offputting to anyone who actually want to fit in to the game.

 

 

 

Go on something like Rappelz or PlaneShift and you won't meet anyone doing that - especially in the case of the latter, everyone is actually getting into the game and actually acting as their character would.

 

 

 

Plus there is still the association of RuneScape with bots and 1337est idiots - despite the fact that the majority of both groups quit due to the updates at the end of last year (the first were mainly RWTers and the second mainly pkers)

 

 

 

 

 

With regards to graphics, a lot of people still think of RuneScape's graphics as being 2D RuneScape Classic graphics. Nowadays, the graphics of full screen RuneScape, with all the options turned to max, is about the same as mainstream MMORPGs - and just a little more laggy. Bearing in mind that graphics makes up the vast majority of Rappelz' 1.85Gigabyte download, is it really worth it?

 

 

 

You ask for another RS-like game? I'm afraid to say that there isn't one.

 

 

 

Furthermore, most of the people who don't like it weren't around even when construction came out. Think how much runescape has changed since then...

 

 

 

My advice is to ignore the flamers. Their loss if they want to miss out on one of the greatest mmos ever just because of an elitest style prejudice...

I dont care what anyone else says about runescape, its fun for me. Only game im really looking forward too atm is diablo 3 and that wont be out for awhile. If you dont enjoy it then dont play it, nothing you can do about what jagex dose. Either adapt or move on, 8 years playing any game is a good run. Hope you find something else you enjoy.

So thats all you did on Runescape so you quit? I enjoyed runescape more than just merchanting of pvp. Most people didn't quit except for the macros,mules,drop traders,rwters. They moved on from pking and if you were a good pker you'd adapt and go to bh and if you fail there well usually they go to cw and try to pk -.-. Frankly I'm mainly a skiller I guess but I do enjoy PvP and Boss Hunting too. Even though I rarley if ever pk'd or staked the loss didn't hurt me. But the trading did I'm the type of person who will give a friend something thats more than 30k maybe a B-Day gift(Happy B-Day Gothic Gaara) or something. But I'm still playing I enjoy GWD,skilling and alot of CW and frankly it never crossed my mind. Also when you say bad Graphics I want a list of every Java game with better Graphics than runescape. Frankly your just whining about pking,staking and ripping the uneducated off. We've heard it a thousand times and frankly I am tired of hearing whiny noobs whine about what Jagex did. I'm glad you quit because we don't need more whiners and spammer on the forum or in game. "OMG no pk no play omg!!!!!!!!!1" What am saying is it's been over 6 month your a bit late and quit whining and just forget about it.

I never heard the word "frankly" used so much. :P But anyways, I agree. You either need to learn how to adapt or just move on if Runescape doesn't interest you.

Good point. I think a lot of it has to do with situation. Some people play RS because it's cheap and it's all their computer can handle. Some people play WOW because all of their friends do. Some people play RWT MMORPG's because they are rich in real life

I think your really misunderstood my thread, ive been playing for years and praise runescape over anything...i suggest you read the thread again.

Now i think this is the only guy that really understood the point of the thread, the point here isnt that if runescape is good or not...its how its being biased to lots of other people and how people dont get into the game and just make statements about this game. You really cant judge a game on its graphics or how it works, its the variety you have in this game is what keeps alot of people playing, as he said in other games all there is grinding. While in runescape, feel like doing some fletching? or wanna kill some monsters?maybe do some quests? and from most games ive played all the quests that they have our kill x amount of this monster or get x amount of this material.

Exactly my point it isnt jagex's fault, theres a demand for people buying gold, so theres all these gold sellin websites?no demand from the players= no gold selling sites...so it is the players fault.

First of all, ive been playing for years... i said that after reading posts like this on the site, i would have the mentality to hate the game and jus look over it cuz thats what is being implemented to me. All that is what the community there thinks not me...and i didnt quit for any of the reasons above, i am just done with runescape, was great fun while it lasted

Well if you want a game based soully on PVP WoW,Guild Wars or some Korean MMORPGs are good. RuneScape was never based on PvP it was based on skill building,and to people who say RuneScape isn't an MMORPG, is it massive, yes, is it multiplayer, yes, is it an RPG, yes......you do the math.
