Is the US at war with Russia?

Featured Replies

Well during the cold war it never went nuclear... came close with the Cuban missile crisis. I for one can see a potential for a military confrontation in Georgia, even a full scale conventional war if both sides are crazy enough to take it to that level. However even the Soviets where not crazy enough to step up the cold war with nukes. Worse case scenario: we start world war three with nukes kept in reserve, and ends in a stale mate some years later after millions die on both sides- most likely neither side will be permitted to attack the mainland of the other, or else nukes would be deployed.

Still I think it more likely this will be resolved by either diplomatic means, or with a military standoff between our forces and the Russians. The former is preferable of course.

Why do so many posts turn into people talking about nuclear war?

And why the hell did 14 people vote down the guy's comment? Sounded ok to me, unless Yahoo answers doesn't appreciate witty remarks, and this wasn't even witty at all...

They voted him down because he got trolled. This is not real, it is fake.

Middle Class people still live comfortably, even after all the taxes. Not to mention good education and pretty good health care.

Basic social economics - the majority of people are NOT middle class. That's just a term that's loosely flung about these days to describe anyone with a fancy job.

Unless you can live without having to work for a wage, you are not anything above working class. And believe me, without state subsidies, the working class do NOT live comfortably.

Why do so many posts turn into people talking about nuclear war?

I don't know, but that kind of mentality drives me freaking insane.

"oh my god we're going to war with russia, they invaded some helpless little country to their south!"

"oh my god we're going to war with china, they're ruining the world and taking all our [cabbage]!"

"oh my god we're going to war with iran, they must have some freaking nukes and want to 'wipe Israel off the face of the earth'"

Lordy people. Georgia kind of started the conflict in the first place, invading South Ossetia and the other separating group which had been (very obviously and for some time) allied with Russia after these two groups attempted to break off. Russia decided to intervene. I could understand you supporting either side, but there's no good reason for any other countries to get involved. It would be ABSOLUTELY FOOLISH for the US to take ANY military action there. There's no reason good enough to fight Russia.

That and then there's the doomsayers who don't treat China as it should be - an economic competitor and nothing more. And Iran - that quote was completely mistranslated.

Freakin doomsayers. Go cower in your little bubbles and stay there.

EDIT: Oh, and here's some of your stupid American media. Read the description on the side of the video, and then watch it.

Haha I <3 it. That literally made me laugh out loud.

That made my day a little better (knowing that I'm not the only dumb person in the world hehe) :P

Well like it or not we are taking action over their to prevent the Russians from simply taking over. We are taking control of the air and sea ports for example. I am surprised we haven't reinforced the capital by now to prevent it from being knocked over too easily... not all us Americans are saber rattling at the moment. I was surprised to hear Dr. Savage (one of the, if not the leading independent conservative talk show host) say that we have no business interfering in what he considers a Russian affair. I thought he of all people would be calling us to arms.

The Georgian president has made many claims and accusations about Russian persecution of his people in country. These claims include that they are murdering civilians, and putting them in concentration camps: http://www.nypost.com/seven/08142008/ne ... 124392.htm

If this proves to be true- to the full extent of these allegations I for one wouldnt mind at this time annihilating the Russian forces their. Of course I am sure I would regret that decision some time down the line.

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland finally agreed on Thursday to host elements of U.S. global anti-missile system on its territory after Washington improved the terms of the deal amid the Georgia crisis.

The preliminary deal was signed by deputy Polish Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer and U.S. chief negotiator John Rood. It still needs to be endorsed by the Polish parliament.

The signing comes after Prime Minister Donald Tusk had been holding out for enhanced military cooperation with the United States in return for consent to host 10 interceptor rockets at a base in northern Poland.

Washington says the interceptors and a radar in the Czech Republic would form part of a global "missile shield" protecting the United States and its allies from long range missiles that could in the future be fired by Iran or groups such as al-Qaeda.

"We have crossed the Rubicon," Tusk said just before the deal was signed.

"We have finally got understanding of our point of view that Poland, being a crucial partner in NATO and an important friend and ally of the United States, must also be safe."

Officials said the deal included a U.S. declaration that it will aid Poland militarily in case of a threat from a third country and that it would establish a permanent U.S. base on Polish soil in a symbolic gesture underlining the alliance.

"We are comfortable that we negotiated a strong agreement," Rood said. "It elevates our security relationship to a new level."

RUSSIA VEHEMENTLY OPPOSED

If everything goes to schedule, the interceptor base would be ready by around 2012, officials have said. The Czechs have already signed an agreement to host the radar although parliament there must yet ratify it.

Russia has vehemently opposed placing the shield installations in central Europe, saying they would threaten its security and upset the post-Cold War balance of power in Europe.

Moscow has threatened to take retaliatory steps against Poland and the Czech Republic, its former reluctant vassals who are now part of the European Union and NATO.

In the face of Russian opposition, Tusk had argued he could not agree to the shield unless the United States agreed to boost Warsaw's air defenses and enhance mutual military cooperation.

Russia's military action against Georgia strengthened the argument, Tusk said on Tuesday, ahead of the talks this week.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski played down the impact of the events in Georgia on the deal, apparently hoping to soften any criticism from Moscow.

In the first sign of Moscow's displeasure, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday cancelled a planned trip to Warsaw in September, Polish diplomats said.

The deal, if approved by parliaments in Prague and Warsaw, will be a rare success for President George W. Bush who has argued it is essential to contain the threat of a potentially nuclear-armed Iran.

Washington hopes the shield might persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear program, although Teheran says it wants to develop nuclear energy only to generate electricity and not to make nuclear weapons.

Let's just piss of Russia more, shall we Georgie Boy?

I always wondered.. Who are the idiots on Yahoo answers always voting down the witty replies (or even correct ones)? Or do they really not know there is a country called Georgia somewhere?

That place (yahoo answer boards) seems like a joke anyways. Almost like 4chan, just with genuine morons instead of trolls/twisted people.

Really, look through some Yahoo answers and replies. You can't help but feel mutual shame with other readers. Your first thought will probably be, "bunch of trolls". The truth will become more and more apparent later on when you realize the questions are serious.

I have the same view lol.

What is wrong with a missile defense shield?

Defence is the best attack. A properly working missile shield would make Russia helpless when compared to Americans and thus either cause the need for them to waste billions in something (same kind of shield, better weapons, etc) in order to keep up with the balance.

The shield itself is just a retaliation against Russia (not the current conflict!) and not Iran like USA at least used to claim. Russia offered places from their soil or countries loyal to them (Azerbaijan for example) and they even agreed to pay certain part of it, yet a spot with worse protection against Iran+no russian money decicion was made.

Would you be OK with Russia installing missiles somewhere in Latin America? Can you blame Russia for getting worried about an organisation which was put together to fight them constantly expanding east with missiles and radars?

They'll probably have them in venezuela within 5 years.

What is wrong with a missile defense shield?

Would you want Russia building missiles in say Latin America, Canada and Western Europe, basically encircling America and stopping them from any form of attack / protection?

No I would want us to do it to them.
