Parents and runescape.

Recommended Posts

My parents are exactly computer savvy, so they don't really get what me and my brother are doing when we are on the computer. If she asks what I'm doing while I'm on Runescape, I just say my game and she just shrugs and carries on doing whatever she is doing. We are trusted enough to control our own time spent on the computer which is little anyway, so we only get told to get off the computer if we are on it late, but even then, they only seem to get annoyed at our consoles and the gun sounds while she is lying in bed.

Yeah my parents say Im growing stupider day-by-day, but MY grades have stayed at an average of 87%. That's why they banned Runescape from me at one point. But my Dad was more easy on me, seeing that he kind of has an addiction to buying expensive gadgets, so he let me play 1 hour/weekend.

To my surprise, I lost that privilege because I stayed about 10 minutes late on rs once. That's when i got banned from rs. However my parents started nor caring about stuff like that, so they let me play a bit, but I still had to be careful.

Again, I stayed late on rs (by 15 minutes this time) trying out the new Stronghold of Player Safety. My parents soon find out from a neighbour, and *bam* there goes my computer. I think some of my clan mates might remember me saying "must stop playing, parents will ban me" when I was roach killing, it came true -.- .

What happened next? My dad passworded every single computer out there including my own, but this time with one of his own passwords. Amazingly, he left one user unlocked: his own. I started using it, and I know that my dad doesn't care too much about me going on it, but my Mom does (It's just that I don't think Dad bothered telling her that I still play  .

Well, that's my battle with my parents -.- .

Wait wait, your neighbour told your parents you were playing the computer late?! WOW, they're missing a few screws to cause havoc in another family if you don't mind me saying.

Your parents just seem unnecessarily strict so you should sit down and have achat with them about what you wish to do when you have spare time. honestly, don't let them make you do things their way all of your life as theywill end up controling you. You're mature enough to take care of yourself (I hope).

Goodluck and I hope you do have a chat with them.

My parents never said anything and I would have been slightly annoyed if they did. If I spent less time on a computer than I did I probably wouldn't be as interested in Computers as I am and would have hindered me long term as for a long time I've wanted a career in computers.

Runescape teaches several things, has puzzles to solve and many more things, a lot of parents do not understand video games at all which annoys me. Being ignorant about it and only going by things in the press about it being "bad" is just silly. As long as it's not effecting your life in a bad way they shouldn't limit your time using it if you choose to do it as a hobby, no different than watching TV.

I agree with your first paragraph but the second is complete bs. Runescape does not teach you anything. All of you saying "Well Rs taught me this!" need to seriously get a reality check. The G.E. is not anything like the real stock market, You're not gaining "social skills" by chatting with players online, and the limited vocab that you do pick up will not help you in life to justify spending hundreds of hours on a game. Yes it is a fun distraction or hobby but it is not at all beneficial.

To the people saying "My parents let me watch 10 hours of T.V. but after 2 hours of Runescape they get mad!" It's because T.V. is considered socially acceptable or "normal", whereas sitting in front of a computer for hours on end, is not.

watching tv would probably teach you more about life then runescape would as your watching real people in real situations not avatars in a go happy runescape life and if your watching the news then you learn about current events.

i enjoy runescape more but its a game it doesnt teach you anything maybe you do basic math calculating skills but anyone that is calculating skills would already know basic math anyone playing rs should tbh...

My two little brothers both play runescape because i introduced them to it. However they play at the standards i use to. Honestly i use to play ALOT. They are always playing, my youngest brother was even given an assignment about the things in runescape which is shocking.

But I never intended them to play as much as they do, video games and the internet in general get in the way of many people's lives. They stop interacting with people in reality and everything they do is virtual it isn't healthy. But i have to agree that parent's are doing something good when they want you to stop playing it to focus on school work etc. It really is for your own benefit.

I quit but they didn't know I played or paid for p2p.

That is the worst thing you could do. Don't ever use your parents Credit Card with out them knowing. If they found out then you would be severely punished and they would not trust you.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

Everything in life is a waste of time because in the end, you die.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

I'm in a similar situation to you Haseo, however mine was a personal choice. I'm starting my A levels next week, and wont be able to give them the attention they deserve if I'm trying to complete my goals on Runescape :|

My parents do say I play on my computer too much, but they also respect that for me, it's a form of escapism and it would do more harm than good to stop me playing :ohnoes:

I'm sorry, but face it,in the end, unless you do an act of bravery that will change that world - Martin Luther King for example - your actions will not matter.

That's some incredible bs. If, for example, you become a doctor, you should save someone's life. If you become a physicist, you contribute to the advencement of technology/whatever. If you're an engineer, you can create something useful. If you're a teacher, you can help someone who will do one of the above.

My parents are sometimes moaning about rs screwing up my life, but then again I remember them that I didn't do any homework (that wasn't going to be checked by the teacher) last year and I still got a 93% average, and that I won First prize for superior knowledge two years ago and second one last year in the provincial Génies en Herbes (a quiz game) tournament

It IS a waste of time. the reason they are forcing you should quit is probally because you wasted most of your summer sitting in front of a computer. there are PLENTY more important things than runescape which is tbh a stupid game, i used to play and wasted a couple of quality years in my life playing a pointless game. theres so much more to life and so much more to do, you should try going for a walk or a bike ride with some mates or going skating or chilling about town or meeting up with girls or going to parties. doing stuff that you SHOULD be doing that helps you grow up and develop interests and more of a personality, playing a game for riduculous ammounts of hours a day leaves you no memories, plus its just unnatural to sit and stair at a screen for hours. get some interests, learn to play an instrument with the time you spend on rs. trust itll benefit you

if you ask me all of you should quit because im sure that there are a WHOLE lot of rs players that are playing like that and are missing out some of the best years of your life. when i used to play my parents didnt realy say anything and tbh id much rather they did. be grateful that your parents care that much for you man

cheers

dude life really isnt just about grades. you need to go out and do things (which im guessing you don't if your parents say it screws up your life) to experience life and to mature and to develop interests etc..

Ive just read all the posts and i seriously reckon i lot of you are in denial about how bad it is spending say 5 hours of a day on it.. you all need to think a bit, you cant do 'well' in runescape unless you spend RIDICULOUS hours on it. a 99 for example in fletching took me 6/7 months but you still dont feel like youre doing that well because so many other people have so many more. its just a waste and i think you should think about whether getting 99 hunter or whatevers realy worth the ammount of hours you have to spend..

I just wasted the last two weeks of the summer playing RS. But no, other than that, none. My parent's have given up. I don't have good grades(they dropped by an average 4 or so percent last year), but I'm still getting a 90 in the only one I care about and try in, Math.(I'm in grade 9. Don't be proud because you can get a 90 in elementary school - well, be proud, but it's harder in hgih school. In elementary I had a mathematical average of around 92%, in 4 subjects(2 of which I never got above 88%s in)). And, yes, I have friends. I also play 2 sports - rep football, and houseleague baseball, because it costs too much(couple thousand) and all of the kids who play it near me are cabbage.

I'm a rather safe guy. Another person says that he spent 3 hrs on comp and 4on TV, parents said nthing on the TV. Well, When you're at the comp you're jsut about 10 inches away from te monitor. computers give off mro radiation than TVs, and you're alwas sitting further away when ou're watcing TV.

Also, not only about health. you can't control what the TV does, and can't view TIF on your TV (unless it's hooked up to your computer). in computers, tere are bad sites that mae change in your brain becuase yo view too much of it or something, and that affects your real life behviour.

if your parent are conceerned about radiation, ask them to go to a computer store to buy a screen for your computer... I can't really get a better name: It's this frame taht you connect to some metal with a hook and the computer screen gives off less radation. Also, if possible, make your computer screen furter away from you, only have yor keyboard and mouse connected close to you, and get the keyboard/mouse as far away frm your screen.

if you have the frame I mentioned earlier and you computer screen 4 times it's hieght away from you, your computer gives off less radiation then a mini-TV!

talk to yor parents and ask them, what they're stil concerned about.

I'm not a parent, and I'd say notto be at your computer for over 5 hours a day.

when I was 11, I sat at teh computer, once for 1 hour, once for 2 hours. teh 2 hours felt muh better then the 1 hour, but then I sat for 3 hour, it felt a little btter, then 4 hours. 4 ours for me was little better than 2 hours.

ok, I just drained half my brain of it's knowledge. time to go get a drink and fill taht gap with TIF/RS knowledge =DDDDDDDD  \' =D>

Death should not be taken as 'the end,' but a very effective way to cut down taxes.

Frist off, thanks for the post. Second off, i do a lot of other stuff with my life. I have a wonderfull girlfriend, who i would not trade anything on this earth for, Also i do go out with friends, even more now that school has started. I also know how to play instruments...( 10th best baritone player in the state FTW) And once i get a job, i should get away from the game, however, i dont my job to interfere with my school work(Being a senior is hard  )

I understand where you are coming from, however i still want to play.

And i care that my parents care about my will being, but I want to quit the game, i dont want my parents deciding that for me. Anyway, thats what i think, your opinion on the topic was good though :)

My parents think it is really sad how much I play and don't mind telling me that... >.<

I have this problem, though thankfully my parent only hint to it, and directly complain, though as long as i'm fit and not failing the SC they don't mind.
