kam42705
Allow me to clear up the sun issue for you guys: The sun weighs in at 1 solar mass... That means that it is a main sequence star. It also means that it BEGAN as the planetary nebulae- after sufficient contraction, it facilitated fusion reactions. It was created 5 billion years ago. Using standard formulas, the sun's age as the main sequence star is 10 billion years, which yields 5 billion years into the future... That'll be when it exits the main sequence, and runs out of hydrogen within its core. Then it's in a dilemma. Thus, gravity pulls it tighter, and it heats up, facilitating helium reactions. This will cause it to swell into a red giant. Once it runs out of all possible fuel, it will shed its outer layer (Not by blowing up, but by dispersal)... After which it becomes a white dwarf (which is basically the naked core), and after it's done... a black dwarf. And before all that occurs, we may reach the state of Armageddon on Earth- self- facilitated suicide. However, we will disperse- technology will lead us to colonise other planets, which may or may not facilitate our existence... i mean wth no1 cares about that weak noob that was scared of the great almighty lord ZAROS! hellbellz
The Maya predicted that when this happens the demons of hell will destory the earth. Demons of Hell? And if you're talking about the supposed Quasar at the center of the Milky Way, I doubt that's gonna do anything anytime soon. redhaloguy
How many times do we have to die? Come on this is one of the more interesting years of my life. Maybe some people don't and are making up these stories to scare the rest of us. If you do things right people won't be sure you've done anything at all. The world doesn't need people propagating incorrect information, and I can assure you it was the maya, the Aztecs believed that they were living in the time of the 5th sun and that when Quetzalcoatl decided to destroy them he would. On a further note, the maya knew a lot of galactic events, so I wouldn't say that they were afraid of their imminent doom, they probably just accepted it as an event that would come to be. DieselX
I think it's lunacy. Some people are unhappy about how things work in the world, so they turn to the end of the world as the hope for everything to change. They need to learn to live in the present, instead of doing nothing and expecting events that might never happen. The end of the world would be horrible, everything that's beautiful would be destroyed, the only reason I can see that people would want that is if they are very unhappy and miserable and see it as the only way to get out of their misery. Anyways...Theres been million (or thousands) of doomsdays, yet im fairly confident im alive. *checks pulse* Sorry, that already happened in January 2008. Back on topic, other than science I don't see how people could just predict that the world is going to end on so-and-so. I think its just a cry for attention to get the media buzzing, I mean c'mon... my school keeps telling me about this rumour called "Global Warming". So anyways, I don't believe that on 12/12/12 we will all die. Infact, contradicting to my first post on this thread I believe that nothing will happen on that day and ultimately fear would be the death of us humans. 00:00:0500:00:0400:00:0300:00:0200:00:0100:00:00 Break the Walls down! Fire_Dude
Even if the sun were to "blow up", the world wouldn't go dark instantly. We'd still be receiving light and heat, for how long I can't remember. It would even look like the sun was still there. What I'm saying is that the rays that the sun let off before it "blew up" would still be on their way here. We'd be receiving the ones that left the sun however long ago. And if 12/12/2012 is the date of this supposed apocalypse, doomsday would be on my 20th birthday. :o

mrpez
you're right, my bad. it takes 8 minutes for the sun's rays to reach us normally. when it blows up, probably only a minute or two.
Mr_Adam
you're right, my bad. it takes 8 minutes for the sun's rays to reach us normally. when it blows up, probably only a minute or two. As meol said, when the sun blows up we won't be able to witness it, because it will swell, turn our planet into an image of Mercury, and engulf us. Don't worry though - It cant be a black hole (isn't big enough).
