Anybody think of pursuing a career in gaming?

Featured Replies

I'm torn between choosing a career in something along the lines of developing videogames (like the guy who writes up the story, adds ideas for helpful little things and such) and a screenwrite/producer or something. I have a lot of ideas for games, but a lot of them just to make videogames better in general, although I'd love to see them develop into a final product. The other thing isn't necessary.

Yeah, lots of ideas. Feel free to share your own. I won't write them down or anything.

I won't even be settling down to do something like this until my 120's, I'll be far too busy doing other things between now and then. So, how about you guys?

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Yes I plan on having a career in video game development. I have some great ideas already for a story. Besides that I'd probably want to be one of the people that make the game tick (programing).

If I can't get into that I plan to do something in the movie business. Maybe editing.

I have a notebook where I've wrote many ideas for an MMO I'd like to develop. It's full of ideas about battle systems, classes, leveling system, PVP, quests, locations, and more. It's pretty fun, though I'm not sure how good it is since I haven't shown anyone .

I hope to be a designer or programmer for video games, and possibly work for Bungie lol :twss:

EA > Bungie.

And yes im currently "pursuing" a carrer in video games .. but will take an extra year due to a course i have to do at college.

Yup, I'm currently studying physics maths and ICT at AS level, hope hopefully 2 years from now I'll be just starting at the university of Derby on a games programming course \o/

Not sure what company I would like to work for but I want to be a games design/programmer

very unlikely that i will get a career involving games since i want to take other jobs that are more exciting for me. :)

I don't know..I'm stuck somewhere between Computer Programming/IT and Video Game Development/Programming. Helping create a game sounds fun, but I've tried making some small games. It's a lot harder than it seems!

I would love to have a career in game design. I think I've played enough games to realize what makes a good game.

I'm planning on being a games journalist. :)

If anyone here becomes a developer, remember to send me your games first.

3D design, I hope. I guess I'll find out in a few years. :)

It's something I've considered, not like I should really be seriously considering anything yet...

But really, Programming is going to be my main non-core course during high school, and I love video games (I'm a PC gamer to be honest, always will...), so...Why not? A few years ago, I went to a computer camp where there were courses where you learned to make games, but I don't remember a thing. I'd most likely get frustrated though and smash a few computers in the process.

I wouldn't mind not being a programmer though, but I'm not extremely creative.

I wish I could work at Harmonix charting songs, but by the time I'm old enough to work they probably won't be nearly as popular as they are now. (I'm only 14) :(

Plus I bet they don't hire "song charters" specifically.

I think it would be pretty cool to actually design game worlds though, from things like TES Construction Set. Or design character models. Whether I go into Game Design or not, I'll always be a gamer >.>

Other than Machinima, then no...

But that's not really for the game...o.O

Which reminds me; I know this guy who wants to be a pro gamer when he grows up. I laughed. :(

I want to be a doctor. :)

But seriously, working on machinimas might be fun for a casual thing to do. I don't think I'd want a career in this kind of business, though.

Hey, just look at the RvB guys. They wanted to do something else but ended up in Machinima.

if by "gaming", you mean being a billionaire playboy, then yes.

The way I see it; I want to be a director and writer of my own animated show and the experience in machinima might help me go up to it.

A few months back, a very popular WoW machinima maker got a job at a gaming site: that would look great in a job resume. =P~

There certainly is a lot that speaks volumes on a resume for a job at a gaming company. I would love to try and do even some 3D models for a game, when I get to that point, but really the more experience the better.

As far as what I want to do right now (as I said before) I have my eye on 3D design. I have 3 more years to really get a hang of it, which I hope I can. However I wouldn't mind actually trying to be in charge of ideas, brainstorming and all of that for game design as well -- I'd like to think I know what goes into a good game. Little things like never taking control away from your character (I.E cutscenes. Valve does this so well because they let you move around in a cut scene, even if it's just looking around) I think are pretty important.

Really though right now the 3D is what I'm aiming for. As far as Machinima goes I am meaning to get into it, at least for PvP videos, come Warhammer. If I do or not really depends though.

I see what you mean, Nick. I'd definitely think that you should start getting the experience with that sort of thing.

I don't know how to make a machinima. I know that Homer does, but I don't. I'd love to learn, but I'm not sure how much time, skill, and money it would take. Could someone help me out on that?

Most Machinima people seem to like Vegas Pro 8 as their software of choice. Mac kids tend to enjoy Final Cut Pro and some people might like Adobe After Effects.

I've only had experience with Vegas Pro 8 and, well, it was kind of confusing. You can always try the trial if you want. Really all else you need is a good base for your machinima (A game, pretty much.) and of course an idea. Oh and then you need your "video camera" which would be something like Fraps to record your screen.

It helps if the game has some way to externally view models as well (WoW model viewer many machinima makers for it use, really helps) although you can just do it as if you were "filming" in game. Kind of think of it as a mix between a traditional "film" idea mixed in with Digital Art.

Money wise, well, it depends where you look ;) . Skill-wise, well, honestly anything can really be learned over time. As far as time I guess that varries, and depends on how creative you are. You don't need fancy editing skills if you have some great ideas to back it up.
