Could the prices of items ever drop so low without the grand exchange? could a d skirt ever be 160k, a dmed 60k and gs plummet that fast?

i think they couldnt, now its just the ease of putting your item in the ge and waiting for it to sell, thus more people selling and price dropping faster. previously you needed to stand hours in W2 saying: "Selling D skirt 900k!" and hoping for someone to buy and not get scammed.

Nah I dont think they had dropped so fast. Ofcourse they had dropped but very slow.

The GE eliminated a lot of the overhead and cost of selling a product... when you bought an item before, you paid for not just the item but also the effort of the person that collected it all so you would be able to buy it all at once.

Everything is bound to drop, it's inevitable (In most cases). But because everyone could see that it dropped with the G.E. beta, people will panic to sell their items. This causes prices to flux at a much faster rate. With trade caps, the only way to sell an item below street value is through the G.E. This ties in with the G.E. beta and supply and demand. The only time there is demand is if an item isn't plummeting. This makes buying a BGS without loosing cash much harder. Demand has now declined and supply has increased. If everyone didn't feel like they're walking on ice, the economy would be much more stable.

I personally don't mind the drop in the prices through the GE, without the GE it would have happened as well (maybe not as drastical as now). Still the GE saves us loads of spare time, since we do not have to spend hours on trying to sell items... This means in the meanwhile we can get more xp/gp, and also GE gives a base for the merchanter, he can even keeop merching during the night.

I do not understand why people insist that prices have dropped since the introduction of the G.E.

 

The price of finished products (armours,rares,potions,weapons,runes etc) have dropped dramatically. This is simply because demand has not changed but supply has become easy.

 

However the price of raw and half made objects have risen just as dramatically. Some examples:-

 

 

 

1. Iron bar - Was 200gp now 240gp

 

2. Steel bar - Was 550gp now 630gp

 

3. Coal - Was 170gp now 175 gp

 

4. Yew logs - Was 310gp now 440gp

 

5. Big bones - Was 300gp now 390gp

 

6. Gold ore - Was 400gp now 520gp

 

7. Raw lobster - Was 300gp now 340gp

 

 

 

This is because there are no autoers doing the donkey work and there is less availability ie demand has remained constant but supply has lessened. The G.E is a tool that has enabled players to seethe supply/demand process in action.

 

Personally my belief is that prices will still go further up overall especially when the PvP worlds start and supply is even more strained.

I don't see why would that happen. Certain massproduced items have been sold for cheaper than the alch price in the past just to save time and efford. Selling dragon items for that kind of prices wouldn't happen for few reasons: you got so few items that alching them would infact be easier, faster and even more profitable. Because of this I assume that non massproduced items wouldn't ever fall below the high alch price (or the price-nat price) even if we didn't have the GE.

I agree, the GE is so much more convenient then looking for items on the forums (not being able to post being a f2p myself) or going to a trade world to spend hours trying to get the item(s) I needed. Yes some items have dropped, but also a lot of items have risen, for instance I know before the GE full Saradomin was selling for 2.1mil or so, its now worth over 4mil. I also think that yes the GE was worth it.

They'd even go lower, although it would take several years for things to drop 'that' low, the GE just increased the speed, but because it's a controlled drop, it won't go lower than the alch value.

see, how its not the people who can live on world 2 who demand a set price and then 20 or so people with the same item sitting around demanding to sell for very similar price.

The GE certainly magnifies what happened in the old trading system. But remember it also lets prices rise quicker, and the GE affects higher priced items much more than lower ones.

D skirts and legs dropped so far largely because of visage hunting flooding the market. As far as rangers they've continually gone up since treasure trail rewards were expanded thereby making them rarer.

 

Personally I find enough good in the GE that I'm willing to overlook the bad(can't have your cake and eat it too =).

with ge everything is lower. back then u had to spend time to find a deal. time = money. so ur dealer would have to put more money in the deal. it was basically like this. the ge made this easier thus making it cheaper.

Not really. I don't think it's the time=money business. What I think it is, is a bunch of merchants and people who panic every time a price falls a wee bit, which actually causes a crash.

I don't think they'll get the same economic crisis we are in in RL tbh...

The Grand Exchange introduced investing into the Runescape economy.

 

Beforehand, it was ridiculous to buy items, hoping that they would go up.

 

People didn't invest, they merchanted.

 

 

 

Now, with the GE database and all, in addition to price limits, investing has become mainstream.

 

People see a minute change in price due to whatever, and then they either buy, buy, buy, or they see a small drop, and sell, sell, sell.

 

This causes severe fluctuations that wouldn't have happened before all of the GE was introduced.

 

 

 

As others have said, in the past, you were not paying only for the materials, but also the service of collecting the material.

 

Now, the vast majority of trading is done via the GE, thus eliminating the time required to gather materials.
