October 4, 200817 yr Heh, this got a reference in Time. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

October 5, 200817 yr Excellent idea PETA. Let's force-impregnate women, cause them to go through excruciating labor every 9 months, not to mention getting squeezed dry around the clock. While we're at it, let's petition to start slaughtering humans to cause the cows less suffering. I support doing this only to PETA members as an effective way to make them realize that they aren't the most rational number in the calculator. Cows go through much less suffering on dairy farms than one may think. They're treated quite comfortably, and can walk over to the milking machine whenever they feel they need to be milked. They live a much more luxurious life than almost any other animal in the industry. Pigs are crammed by the dozen into tiny stalls, and are fed just enough to keep them alive; many other animals live this life style too. If you compare dairy cows lives to any other animal, this is unbelievably rediculous. PETA expects the same thing to happen, but with a more intelligent species? They also need to take into consideration the mass amount of ice cream consumed. People willing to go through hell like this don't come by the bushel.
October 5, 200817 yr cows do not have a comfortable life actually. of course if it is milked locally (i mean like raised on a farm, fresh air, open fields) then they are good. But alot of factories have cows crammed into tiny spaces, head to head, eating crap, crap all over the floor, terrible conditions.

But alot of factories have cows crammed into tiny spaces, head to head, eating crap, crap all over the floor, terrible conditions. Not necessarily true. Most dairy farmers (not just locally, I'm also talking about factories) try to raise their cows in the most comfortable conditions, in order to produce the best milk. Of course, there are limits to the comfort you can make for them, but they are better than you may think.
October 5, 200817 yr Have you ever even been to a milking barn? There's really a lot of space. Milk cows are a lot more "comfortable" than meat cows. They just cluster. EDIT: CRAP TIM FINCH AUGH THAT WASN'T FOR YOU! >_< catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
October 5, 200817 yr well yes, there is a local milking ranch in my hometown and the cows do live quite nicely, but I mean like big business industries, all about the cha ching.

October 5, 200817 yr Pigs are crammed by the dozen into tiny stalls, and are fed just enough to keep them alive; I know this is threatening to go on a tangent, but surely the logical thing with raising pigs is to feed them lots so that each pig produces more meat? As a person living in Norfolk, England, my knowledge of agriculture is appalling. ~ W ~

As a person living in Norfolk, England, my knowledge of agriculture is appalling. I think it's cheaper to save that food and raise more pigs to compensate the meat. But my knowledge on the subject also failz.
October 5, 200817 yr Pigs? That depends. The farms I've seen usually don't have more than a few pigs per stall, and feed them fairly well. But I'm sure there are larger factor-farms that don't treat them as well, as there are with cows. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
October 5, 200817 yr I may have been wrong on the feeding part, but they aren't fed a lot. And on my farm pigs are packed extremely tight into the stalls.
October 5, 200817 yr I've only seen family farms raise pigs, anywho. One of the larger milk farm owners I know, I asked him why he didn't raise cows for slaughtering or pigs or chickens or whatever. He said it was more expensive. I was kinda leery, but, hey, he does own the big dairy farm. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
October 5, 200817 yr And on my farm pigs are packed extremely tight into the stalls. so... you are saying you are part of the problem? i personally don't care about how my meat is treated before it gets to me, as long as it tastes good and doesn't like poison me, fine by me. kinda fun to say that though on a topic discussing PETA. Most dairy farmers (not just locally, I'm also talking about factories) try to raise their cows in the most comfortable conditions, in order to produce the best milk. I'm confused, why is it that if you put cows in comfortable conditions they give better milk, and yet if you put pigs in comfortable conditions they don't give better meat? Hang on... your farm? :-s ~ W ~
October 5, 200817 yr I don't get the your farm thing either, but when cows are happier (and obviously healthier), they produce better quality milk. Not sure why. As for pigs, really just feed 'em and eat 'em. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
October 5, 200817 yr Wouldn't a relaxed cow produce better meat? I remember watching a show on venison farms before and when they slaughter the deer they always try to do it quickly to cause no stress, as stress makes the meat tougher and adrenaline is released by the deer giving the meat a somewhat acidic taste. I assume the same goes for other agricultural meats such as cows or pigs.
October 5, 200817 yr What don't you get about the my farm thing? And I never said that better conditions didn't affect the pigs meat.
October 5, 200817 yr Author he lives on a farm. its not hard to comprehend. and people dont have to be forcibly impregnated to lactate, its just hormones.

PLANTS HAVE FEELINGS TOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! :ohnoes:
