Player Moderators: Are They Really Worthy?

Featured Replies

... Worthy of wearing the crown next to their name?

What's your opinion on the entire situation with Moderators these days?

Do you believe some abuse their powers?

Basically, let your mind do the talking and be brutally honest :)

Personally, I think the majority (95%+) are unworthy of it.

Example: I came across a Level 9 the other day who didn't even know where Falador was... How is he helpful to the in-game community at all?

I actually think the statistics should be swapped around. Literally EVERY player mod I've come across has earned that silver crown in my eyes. Never have I seen one abuse their powers. I'm sure there are some who get the privelage randomly (that level 9 for instance) but for the most part they do their job just fine.

Some are, but not all.

I think people are reporting offensive players just so they can get the silver crown and, once they do, they just slack off.

Several times I have seen player mods who did nothing but chatting or training their skills. Once I asked one of them to mute another player for obvious message-flooding rude languages (not censored), she told me to get a life and kept to her business. How rude!

Hmm, that really depends on the situation. I have a couple friends who became Mods way later. They are really good people and I have nothing bad to say about them. I've also never seen one abuse their powers in person. However, people like Zezima...that's a different story. I look up to Zezima. He's practically beaten the game. But does he deserve the Mod Status. Probably not. It makes me wonder if when he gets a crowd around him that just want to stand next to a God...does he start muting people? I haven't heard any stories, but it makes me want to avoid him. If he is feels a little irritable, will he drop punishment upon his fans?

Again, I guess it depends on the situation...

Zezima is a Player mod?

He isn't know, I heard that "popular" players weren't allowed it simply because of that reason (crowds around = spamming = excessive muting).

Yes, I think that the vast majority of them are. I've never met a PMod who has abused his/her powers, and they have all been friendly and helpful. Jagex doesn't ask them to go vigilante on rule-breakers, they just have the potential ability to mute others. They could ignore any rule breaking happening around them if they like, they are not like some kind of RS police.

3_Hit_U, that was a huge generalisation. You can't back up a percentage like that with a single example.

95%? I don't think so. Some, maybe, a rather small number, but really, 95%?

I was only using one as an example, I can't list all the bad mod-experiences I've come across, the internet isn't big enough

Just now I saw one saying "power training is when you use a program to train for you". Some noob was taking it all in so now whenever someone mentions power training he will report them. I didn't say anything as I know how report happy these player mods can be.

Trust the Gene Genie!

Yes player moderators are worthy and Jagex does carefully select them. About them abusing powers isn't really true, though it depends on how you define it. Abusing powers to the degree of muting innocent people won't work for long, because when you mute someone you send in a report as well so Jagex can investigate.

The fact that a large number of them can act rude, or more accurately, annoyed, is because tons of people bother them or sometimes even insults them based on generalization.

They don't get any favors besides that crown and ability to mute and aren't obliged to help out even if you ask them to or if there's a rule breaker nearby.

If there's one thing that holds true for a large percentage of Player Moderators, it's the fact that they report too much and even for small and harmful matters. This is caused by the fact that a player must send in many reports in order to become a moderator, and thus continue to do so after getting the position. Other than this you can't generalize.

I've based my thoughts and opinions on my own time as a previous player moderator, so I've been in the pmod environment.

They really don't at all, a guy leaked the entire process of how they do it years ago (he was a co-admin of one of the biggest cheat sites) and the process is still the same apparently.

I find most player mods are pretty good at their job, I think I might of met a bad one once, but my memory of my f2p days aren't so good. :twss:

(Slightly off topic, but is it just me or do some p-mods have the weridest fashion senses? :? )

I've seen the odd one or two be slightly rude. I daren't pass judgement on them for it tho, God knows what stupidly irritating questions they get asked throughout the course of a day.

I have heard numerous stories from other people regarding abuses of power and the lack of Player-Mod accountability though, but again, I've always found them rather nice! ^^

Why worry about something like this when your so freaking awesome at runescape? you invented pures! No one ever thought of it, you were the very first, and you sure flaunt it in a big headed fashion.

On topic, your wrong.

No matter how careful Jagex is, they can't control stuff like this. That player could've done the things required to become one in the game and do bad things outside of the game. Jagex cannot just ban him if they even happen to see his name on a cheat site, and a very possible explanation could be because screenshots (or whatever evidence you have) can be easily faked. If they relied on that kind of information you could get a lot of player moderators or players busted.

No, he didnt invent pures, he just pwned them all and crowned a king back then.

Man basiliko, its weird how much knowledge you have.... Did you ever watch him pk back in the day? Because he wasn't that great at catching.

Stop being suck-ups, and stay on-topic.

I'm sure there was a thread on bad P-Mods or something, or might have been an imageset in another thread.

Imo they are not needed.

There's definitively some mods who deserved their status, and some who didn't. But at the end of the day, it's their attitude that's the most annoying. I don't like people who defend Jagex all the time out of some sort of misplaced faith into them. And I especially don't like people who put themselves on a pedestal acquired by kissing someone's(in this case, a company's) [wagon]. All the noobs follow them around, noobstruck in awe and keep complimenting them and whatnot. Well, that's a good thing, noobs go and annoy these suckers. What's annoying though, is when they brag about it, or use it. For instance, I offer my opinion on a clan chat, and a pmod says his opinion at the same time. Then in a very typical fashion, the noobs go omg stfu the pmod is more right than you are. And that, regardless of the fact I know more about the subject than that sucker does. Now the polite thing to say from the pmod to the noobs would be, listen chaps, I'm a pmod but I don't necessarily know more about the game than any other normal player. Do they do that? Nah, they enjoy their ego getting petted, that's why they accepted becoming a mod to begin with, even if they know it is an unrewarding noob-swarmed job.

The day I meet a pmod with a good attitude, then we'll see. But for now, pmods are useless and unecessary. They just create a gap between ordinary players, and for what? It's a blindly given title, hit and miss. Sometimes Jagex hits someone with good discernment, and sometimes jagex misses and gives the mute power to a complete idiot. And that's the thing, they miss so often it's not worth it.

2480+ total

I wouldn't say that they "abuse" their powers. They're just stupid and ill-informed, which makes society all the worse if those who are supposed to be "enforcers" don't even know what they're enforcing. Abusing their powers would be going about muting everybody for minor offenses.

This applies to the player mods who are sub-par. I'm not generalizing all player-mods as this.

Regardless of how long it takes before Jagex takes action against a rogue p-mod, p-mods have strict guidelines on what is mute-worthy. The mute is really meant to be pure damage-control.

Jagex has many things they investigate when searching into potential p-mods, including forum presence (if any), account security, # & quality of reports, etc.

Regardless, a few people who simply wern't meant to be mods will slip through the cracks by simple law of averages.

In any case, remember that people who arent the above are doing what action needed to be taken in their own eyes.

Yes player moderators are worthy and Jagex does carefully select them.

Would you like to share it with us?

Lots of accusations and you still cant present anything...

I think most of them earn it, and, to the person who said the pmod told them to leave them alone, if you read the Kbase, it says player mods DO NOT HAVE to help you, and they are FREE TO PLAY THE GAME, any way they want.

They are simply players who have proven to be able to handle reports successfully.
