tefda
[hide=]Development plan as of 31-Mar-04 Now that we have finished our big game engine update we can finally get back to producing regular updates to the game. I'm sure you're all wondering whats coming next now the update is finally out, so read on for a summary of some of the things we have planned. The new game engine allows for us to do a much greater variety of updates. We will be able to produce many exciting new features which we simply couldn't do previously. We have also expanded our development team over the last few months so expect the updates to start coming thick and fast. These are just some of the many of the currently planned features. New areas: # A viking style area, including a new quest and town. Complete # A large 'frozen lands' area including penguins, mammoths, polar bears and more. Complete (Almost) # A pyramid quest in the desert full of traps, treasure and mummys . Complete # A barrows of the undead area to explore and find new equipment. Complete # Some good training areas designed for rangers. Complete (Up to Debate) New quests: # There will of course be lots of new quests. We will be adding these on a regular basis again, including Part 4 of the ongoing plague city storyline. Complete(They did release part 4) New items: # Enchantable rings. Complete # More rare weapons and armour - including weapons with impressive special moves. Complete # Armoured boots. Complete # More clothing to help give your characters a unique look. Complete # Special prayer book items which can be wielded in the shield spot for prayer bonuses. Complete New features & skills # Treasure hunt mini-game with a variety of rewards, including some new rare items. Complete # Summoning spells - summon skeletons, demons, etc...!Complete # A quest journal for you to read and recap what point you are up to in each quest. No more coming back to a quest after a break, and wondering what you are supposed to do next. Complete # More random events, to give more variety, and lots of chances to win unexpected rewards. Complete # More pets and followers with different properties and abilities. Complete # Special organised game events on holiday. Complete # Many new monsters such as Orcs, Lizardmen and more. # In game versions of our boardgames such as chess and draughts. And are also planning on adding even bigger features, that really take advantage of our new engines abilities, such as: Player owned houses - Each player will be able to have their own unique house. Use the new carpentry skill to make new/rare things for your house.Using the farming skill to grow herbs and plants in the grounds of your house. Build your own private party areas] and shop areas, and more! Clan support, to allow you to optionally form your own clans with your friends. Mutiplayer castle arena for massive team based wars! Complete Randomly generated scenarios, where a new adventure is generated for you and your friends each time you go on it. Form an adventuring party and go on your own personal quest. So there's lots to look forward to! We think the next year will be very exciting.[/hide] I thought I might bring this list back up to the communitys attention. We've actually received nearly everything they promised. The only parts that I found were No Skeletons for Summoning, No Chess and Draughts (But after the flop of the Games Rooms I can't blame them), No Private Shops in POH (Although not necessary with G.E., also it's almost like your own private store), Optional Forming of Clan (Not as powerful as we'd imagine but technically we have it), Still no Randomly Generate Scenarios (There is a mini-game with scenarios but you cannot form a party with your friends), and No Farming patch in your POH. Notice how it's nearly five years later and Jagex has managed to stick to this plan (along with developing loads of other stuff as well) and deliver on nearly everything. They've given more than any of us back in '04 could have even thought of. Jagex has been planning all of this for a very long time and I'm sure that we have even more awesome stuff to look forward to. Would anyone else like a similar update list for the future? I know we have Behind the Scenes and Jagex announced that this is the year of the update but I want to see what they have planned for years down the line. What quest lines will be continued, closed, hints of new skills (Notice how Hunter wasn't in there at all...)? I hope you've enjoyed this quick blast to the past. Take a look at the old Behind the Scenes archives/Game Updates and you can still find things from RSC. I think we all can be thankful that we have so much cool stuff to do in this game. The updates we've received have almost always there to add value to the game and I'm sure that those who have stuck with it all the way have gotten every penny's worth. Omali
Around the time that the Grand Exchange came out, I think it was Mod Paul that said Player owned shops were not possible at the time, but could possibly come out in the future. I don't know why they would do it though; what use could the POS do that would make it preferrable to the Grand Exchange? I've lost hope for Player owned Shops, farming plots in houses, and Clan forming. Jagex said on the RSOF that clans are not possible, referring to how difficult it is just to have two teams in mini-games like clan wars and castle wars, noting the system couldn't handle it. Troacctid
They did release chess, they just made it part of FunOrb instead of Runescape. (And rightly so.) They also did let you plant stuff in a POH...bagged plants will give you farming experience for putting them in your garden. Blingkachi50
What was wilderness tag supposed to be? Jagex was going to add pillars all about the wilderness that you can could run to and tag. It would of been fun w/ the right rewards and if pkers were still around, but with the removal of pking I don't think it'd hit off well. Although now with the introduction of PvP it could be another great idea, I for one would play it if the rewards were anything decent at all. me
Nice look at the past. Jagex have definitely done a lot. Let's go back further, to some of their earliest plans... Newsletter 1 (21 Jan 2001): We are of course working on many more improvements to add to the game to make it even better. We have nearly finished work on the bank which will hopefully be added to Varrock city tommorow. The bank is a safe place to store your money, such that even if you die it can't be lost. After that the magic system is due for a big overhaul with lots of new spells being added, plus we'll be adding some entirely new professions such as crafting and fishing to add even more variety to the game. The next planned quest is 'The vampire slayer quest' in which you must work out how to slay the evil vampire currently sleeping in Draynor Manor. Newsletter 2 (7 Feb 2001): We've received a lot of good suggestions, a lot of which we are planning to add to the game. In particular the following changes are planned next: -Modify the trade window to display the names of items to prevent unfair trading. -A lot more spells are still due to be added to the magic system. -Proper support for clans, with a full system to allow people to join and create clans. -A 'duel' feature. Challenge your rivals to a duel, with the risks and rewards set as you like. -More skills such as fishing, and fletching. -A friends list to indicate which of your friends are online, and allow easy communication. -And of course more quests, more monsters, and more areas of map. I guess you could argue that our current clan support isn't "proper clan support", but mostly they did what they said. ...Now, even further back, to what they intended for the game before its release: It's been 2 years in the making, and now our latest greatest game is almost complete. Runescape is a massive multiplayer adventure, with monsters to kill, quests to complete, and treasure to win. Trade and communicate in realtime with other players. Your charactor will continue to evolve and improve the more you play. Choose good or evil the choice is entirely yours Mechscape World (the original MechScape fansite)

tefda
Much of those that aren't complete might be argued that they are in fact complete. I liked seeing the even further past that "me" posted. Looks like some of the cornerstones of the game we take for granted didn't exist at one point. Something that might intrigue you all is going through each behind the scenes and quantifying what they promised and what they delivered on. As from the previous posts we can see that there are certain updates we never received and even more have no clue as to whether they will or will not ever be a part of the game (although it's probably safe to say the will not after half a year). diib
Randomly generated scenarios, where a new adventure is generated for you and your friends each time you go on it. Form an adventuring party and go on your own personal quest. One could argue that the temple trekking minigame is already a randomly generated scenario. "Noob" is an insult. "Noob" is overused. Be polite. Try to say "noob" less than once a day.Thank you.
