l0rd
The theory that states that given the existence, yet incalculable path of all the particles in the universe, there is a determined future, rather than one exposed to randomness. Thus, free-will would be merely an illusion, and an idea produced by the incomprehensible pathway that the particles of the universe follow. I'm on the fence. I don't know enough about quantum mechanics to make a valid argument for or against it. But I thought it was interesting. Do you think free will exists? dluvs
Fatalism is just science merging with the religious belief of fate. I don't buy it. Agreed. We do not have a fate, we all have choices which in turn changes the course of our future. As we all have the ability to choose our future this can change the world in its entirity. With the incredible advancements in science, technology and globalization it is impossible to know what will happen in the future. For all we know the global financial crisis along with terrorism could cripple our society completely, or maybe in 100 years we will have people living on Mars. warri0r45
I've not thought about it that much, but I don't see how it can be wrong considering how cause and effect works. I don't let it bother me.
mmmcannibalism
Well, I guess you could view things that way, but realistically since we have no way of understanding quantum mechanics to that level you do have free will. Maybe everything is predecided that way; however, your still choosing to do it in the sense that you arent being told what is determined. Wow that is confusing sounding. To simplify, its too complex to say what is going to happen through quantum mechanics so we still have free will because nothing is controlling us in the literal sense. Orthodoxy is unconciousnessthe only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed.
Bauke
Imo, fatalism is a point of view which can be intepreted as true. Though it is not a practical theory and therefore unfit to use in daily life. Lenticular_J
I dunno. I believe in free will, but I also believe in unfree will. That doesn't make any sense, does it? Yeah, doesn't for me either... catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Will H
I have a suspicion it might be true, but since we can't precisely determine the future just from information of the past and present, it doesn't matter anyway. From our point of view, free will is how we experience the world, and until there's an opportunity to escape what might be a delusion, you have no choice but to go with the flow and assume it. Ponder this: What do you do if it's fated that we will never find out that fate exists? ~ W ~

Quoi_Tu
Whether it's true or not, it doesn't affect anyone, so why care? This. Why care about Pluto? Many people do, its a science. Actually, that's a good question. I'm sure some unemplyed philosophy majors could tell you. One thing I dislike about ancient philosophy and thought is that a lot of it is now known to be wrong or just useless, unscientific speculation. It just seems unproductive. No. Don't get into that. My sister already annoyed me to no end when she took a philosophy course and tried to debate with me about things I didn't care about. On forums, remember, we have the great privilege of being able to leave the thread for good, so I don't suggest you try. Why care about Pluto? Many people do, its a science. Because one day, Pluto may affect us. And think of all the technology developed because of America's space program.

lobsta
This reminds me of a quote: "if you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics" I dont think the future has been planned. I am of the opinion that the human brain, that has evolved in 'middle earth' will simply be unable to comprehend the queerness of the universe.
