1_man_army
Um, how hot is 46*C exactly? Because a converter I found on google says 114.6*F, which isn't THAT hot...especially when you consider they were playing tennis at the Australian Open with courtside temps upwards of 140*F/60*C. And record highs of 30*C in the UK? What? I said just above 30 but I was a little off, it was 37.9*C. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3138865.stm He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)
Madmanpur3
That's still barely over 100 degrees F, which is semi common during the summer here in the Midwest (of the U.S.). But still, this thread is acting like 46*C is unheard of...and considering it's Australia I'd guess it would be somewhat common. :\ Temps around here honestly range from -25*F to 110*F and it's not uncommon for there to be 50 degree differences from one day to the next. Giordano
This reminds me when some idiot hiker started a rescue fire here in California and it spread to over 400 thousand (?) acres. What gives these people the will to start fires? To kill? To have fun? :wall: Pyromania is classified as a mental illness & impulse control disorder, which can persist even after heavy Thorazine/Depixol medication and is usually formed already in childhood. It's extremely hard to treat, I do have some sympathy for the people who genuinely can't control their actions http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_g ... 2602000316 Researchers have discovered a link between the control of impulses and the neurotransmitter serotonin, a chemical agent secreted by nerve cells in the brain. Pyromania involves the repeated setting of fires for no specific reason (such as sabotage or revenge). Rather, the pyromaniac is someone who tends to have a fascination with fire itself, often expressed as an interest in firefighters and their procedures and equipment. It is not uncommon for a pyromaniac to set a fire, report it himself, and then watch as firefighters put it out, even offering to assist them. I don't hate them, what they're doing is horrible though, as far as I read from the news at least a part of the bush fires were intentionally started, even if the person responsible has pyromania, he is more or less involved in the mass murder of civilians. The main difference is that southeastern Australia also has to deal with dry (low humidity) heat and very little water. And we've got a huge honking hole in the ozone layer right above us. Remember that this is in the south of Australia - the area in question including Adelaide, Melbourne and the top of Tasmania. Their average summer maximums most certainly aren't 46*C. In fact, many records were broken or reached, including the longest streak for days above 40*C in Adelaide since 1908 and the highest ever recorded temperature for Tasmania and Melbourne. It may even be worse but I'm not up to date on my news sources. Make no mistake - these are very exceptional temperatures. jemathonical
Its bad enough we became litterally the Hottest Place on Earth with a staggering 46*C heats but these idiot arsonists continue doing this causeing it to be worse. Up here I'd say that 18 or 19*C is good Summer weather 19 degrees is a good maximum for our winters :). Mother Earth is amazing ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it! Up here I'd say that 18 or 19*C is good Summer weather 19 degrees is a good maximum for our winters :). Mother Earth is amazing 18 or 19 is only a couple of degrees hotter than the winter temperature in the coldest places of victoria. (Source) Um, how hot is 46*C exactly? I didn't think Saturday was too bad actually, sure it was 45+ but i didnt have any big problem with the heat. theres no air con in my tin roofed, no front veranda (where the sun hits) house. RichieMcD
I'm not entirely up to date on the matter but how are so many dieing? Is it mostly firefighters getting trapped and then burned or slowly recovering bodies from the two destroyed towns? It's an extremely high figure for a disaster which can somewhat be avoided and predicted.

RichieMcD
The arsonists, if apprehended will be tried for mass murder. Legally speaking, the most I think they can be done for will be manslaughter unless it can be proven physically they created the fire with the intent of the fire/s causing severe bodily harm or death. In an article I read today it said an unconfirmed police statement said that the maximum they can face is 25 years though :| Shameful to think there could be so many dead yet these people will only face 25, most likely 15 if they act on good behavior throughout their sentence. remoteman
The devastation is absolutely astonishing, it honestly looks like a post apocalyptic scene. One kid in my mum's kindy class lost a pair of grandparents and another's aunty and uncle lost their house, and i live in sydney. Just shows you how far reaching the affects are. Kranked1, i believe most of the people who have been killed were the ones that tried escaping from their homes, a lot have died in their cars by either trees falling on them or they're just catching fire. Others have been trapped in their houses and perished, the fire moved at astronomical rates. I haven't heard of any reports of firefighters dying by being trapped when trying to rescue people from houses, they're not really doing that kinda work, it's more fighting the bush fire that they're doing. IGoddessI
RIP the photos and news footage were very devastating. Oh and I hope the arsonist/s get life in prison. I heard the fire swept through at up to 180km/h thanks to the wind and so people in their cars had no chance to escape. I don't know if that's true or not. The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.
