March 28, 200917 yr I'm not. Other stuff is still happening. Focusing on the economy more than already would be stupid. Besides, whats he gonna do, throw more money at it? There isn't altogether a coherent plan. I don't know what this means, since everything seems to be conflicting. I've volunteered before, it isn't like it's hard. Right now we literally give away thousands of dollars to thousands of students with no expectation of return. Fafsa gives out many scholarships and if you don't file for a scholarship you are considered dumb in any school. I'm excited to see some return on that money through community service. Since you are serving your community it's what it says. Have we really become so jaded as a society that we won't help other, in exchange for a grant? Really how many of you campaigned for your presidential choice, I spent more than 30 hours in the last month sorting door hangers, walking door to door, meeting at rallys phone banking and supporting other campaigners. It felt great. When north carolina wasn't decided for a couple of days in the election I knew I had done my part. At the very least I had helped turn a strong red state into a leaning red state, and at the most we had won it.

Look at you guys you are complaining about not having time and you have characters with thousands of hours put into them. When I see someone argue that they work 30 hours 3+ jobs go to school full time and don't have available time for this I can see how that might be true. But the second I glance down and see they have a singe skill above 40 I know they are whining without cause.

Everyone I know (high school and college students, in a variety of grades and at different levels) has at least two free hours a week. However, if they only have two free hours, and they have to spend those two hours doing community service, then well, they're mostly likely screwed. Quite a few schools in this area already require community service, so it wouldn't be too bad. Not to mention, yes, at least it isn't conscription... Change we can believe in! [spoiler=click you know you wanna]Me behave? Seriously? As a child I saw Tarzan almost naked, Cinderella arrived home from a party after midnight, Pinocchio told lies, Aladin was a thief, Batman drove over 200 miles an hour, Snow White lived in a house with seven men, Popeye smoked a pipe and had tattoos, Pac man ran around to digital music while eating pills that enhanced his performance, and Shaggy and Scooby were mystery solving hippies who always had the munchies. The fault is not mine! if you had this childhood and loved it put this in your signature!

I campaigned for obama, and at best your sentiments against me is strict conservatism, at worst it's thinly veiled racism. The fact is he has been president for 2 months and certain groups are already saying he is the worst president, that he's communist. Before he took the oath people questioned his citizen-ship, some still question it. Then while reciting the oath, Justice john roberts mispoke, obama knew the oath and took the chance to correct him. Conservatives said he isn't their president and he had to redo the oath twice. I think that you campaigned for mccain, someone who didn't vet his vice president at all, who selected a woman who will take womens rights back to the state in the 19th century, someone who complains about ear marks but who doesn't shy from using them, and the person who likes to champion his POW status but would have been discharged after his 4th plane crash if his daddy wasn't an admiral. Think about this, his dad gave him multiple chances the common citizen doesn't get, it was only because he crashed the 7th plane he was a POW. He shouldn't have gotten the chance to fly the 4th plane, let alone the 7th. It can be community service if you are paid for it. When I volunteered for 30 hours at the library in 9th grade, they gave me a gift card to a local book store. I got that gift card and I had no idea it was coming. Right now people get a free ride for college, but nobody complains because it's for their white privildged children. Yet you complain and ask for drug testing for minorities on welfare, and say that welfare is taking my money. Right now we spend more money on social security and medicare than any other form of government spending, I'll never get a social security check but yet I keep paying it. I'm only 22. Go ahead and complain about this act, but studies prove community service actually improves grades. CS actually helps people feel better, plus you get a chance to directly affect those who need help. If you are getting 4 grand in free tuition already I see no reason why you should be against this. There is afterall, no such thing as a free lunch.

I just want to point out, please, please, please don't pull the racist card on anyone if they happen to dislike Obama; it makes any respect for anything you write go away from me. Anyways, on-topic, I really don't think community service should be required; the whole point is to make you feel better about helping others, not being forced into it. March 28, 200917 yr Fact obama won the election because of race. Seeing as how this topic is about community service, I tried my best to tie in community service with that lengthy reply. I never said you were racist but I said it was the worst possible case. Seeing how I work in a very redneck bar the attitudes can range from the idea that he's too liberal (my first point) to he's black (my second point). You can try and say racism doesn't exist, but my coworker ( a white female who is married to a black man) has to listen daily to people talk [racist term] this, [racist term] that. How my own brother said obama supports the gays and the [racist term]s so he won't vote for him. Just because you have black friends doesn't mean you don't have a preference for race. Take the MIT test on racial bias, I'm sure you'll be surprised. If you really want me to bring up why I voted for obama and supported him I'll list a few: He supports the removal of don't ask don't tell. He supports removing the tax cuts bush gave for the very rich, that have hurt our budget. Along with fixing the loophole ridden tax system for companies that export jobs. He supports equal rights for all races and all sexes, as well as a very liberal agenda against discrimination based on sexuality. He's already said they will stop raiding medical marijuana dispensaries, and is focusing more on preventing weapons from leaving our country and the flow of money, rather than trying to enforce drug laws. The economist, a [cabbage] heel economic magazine that is based on economic conservatism gave them their endorsement. Yes that's right, economists think that obama not mccain would see us through this recession better. You can sit here and debate all day, but it ain't politics. It's political correctness, because you froth at the mouth with rage when someone pulls "damn race card" Now tell me who you supported and why.
March 28, 200917 yr I guess everyone likes to continue to follow Alex Jones' word as gospel, especially because he appeared on Fox News! :wall: When will the internet just drop the loser off a cliff and actually "think for themselves?" People so callously call others sheep left and right, without actually thinking for themselves. The irony would be hilarious, if it wasn't coupled by sadness and stupidity.
March 28, 200917 yr So... What's the age cutoff and when will it go into effect? No age cut off, and it's right before we complete the roads for the North American Union, the New World Order has a leader, all pro-life activists are arrested, and when we ban all guns/don't allow people to grow tomatoes in their front yard! Tomatoes!
March 28, 200917 yr Isn't it a little bit unconstitutional to make it required to do community service? Hehe. In Finland at age 18+ you either go to the military for 6-12 months, community service for 12 months, or the police issues an arrest warrant & takes you to prison for 6 months the day you start skipping service. Some kids complain about it, but it can build character for some people who are still undisclipined/too childish to yet enter the workforce after school. For emotionally mature people it can be hell though, I expect that now that a similar law exists in the US, exceptions will be made for people such as college/uni students who already have jobs. In Israel/China where universal conscription exists as well (mandatory service isn't equal, but still), people with high societal positions/important jobs can be exempt.
March 28, 200917 yr hmmm 100 hours a year in college is kinda silly... I am already pretty busy with work (doubles every weekend day), papers and other school work, and service learning projects (where I have to "volunteer" about 20 hours of my time a semester). I guess I won't have fun anymore :( . Also, the fact that they want to hold college loan money without completion of the 100 hours is [bleep] :x. Racism is basically dying out, I don't know of a single racist but one, ans she's mentally challenged, and always says weird stuff. If he removes the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, will that not make it worse for gays in the military? Hey, guess what. Why would you want to put more taxes on top of the wealthy. Who do you think owns businesses? Who do you think gives jobs? If we tax the rich too much, they'll have less money, so they'll start firing off workers. How about instead of blaming all the problems on the rich; they stop the ridiculous bailouts. When the Swedish gov't was asked if they'd help bail out Saab they replied "Why? We are not in the car industry business, we have nothing to do with Saab." I think thats exactly the attitude we should take. The economy is a cycle, sure we'll have bad times, but it'll always correct itself. And btw; the Left is thinking of another bailout before this one is already done, and someone calculated that if the gov't instead gave every American CITIZEN an equal increment instead, we'd all get around $500,000. March 28, 200917 yr If he removes the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, will that not make it worse for gays in the military? It doesn't matter if it makes it worse or better, it's the right thing to do. If the military is full of homophobic idiots, then we'll soon find out. The sooner gays are integrated into the military, the sooner it will be common place to accept them for who they are. Segregation worked out so well for racism...oh wait.... Lol, and since when does bailing out companies have to do with a higher tax on the wealthy? You're arguing for the Swedish model? That's what I argue for. We're bailing out a company in which our entire financial structure revolves around, not some car company that really won't affect employment. Besides, nationalizing is something we should do for insolvent firms, but of course your ilk of beliefs doesn't believe in that either....but wait, that's what the Swedes did! This is not a "business" cycle, this is effectively the biggest failure of the deregulations of banks (allowing for Shadow banking) since Ronald Reagan. And back on topic, it seems like you have nothing to say about your circus news network, or Alex Jones' craziness.

They squandered investments so they would make money, they took toxic assets and tried to sell them as securities to other banks that by the time it was over for every dollar in debt that someone had on their house, there was 30 dollars in debt down the line. It's the rich who lobby against unions, against a working minimum wage. I want to put more taxes on the wealthy because in the 20s the highest tax bracket paid 90 percent. In the last 90 years it's gradually gone down to levels us, as a country cannot afford. I consider it shameful that you think those who who have no dispensary income should be taxed the same as those who who have mostly dispensary income.
March 28, 200917 yr I'm glad there is at least one like minded person on these forums. I know a forum based on a game where the userbase is mostly children, would bring out the talking points of conservative parents. But is it real that you cannot think on your own? You are looking at a future where minimum wage should be closer to 10 dollars an hour based on inflation and you just now getting 75 percent of that. While you go to college if your family loses their job, you would have to drop out or take loans, and work for that 7.50 to pay your 4 grand a year in college. Try thinking for yourself, and stop with the homophobic sentiments. racial bias study: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/07/09/vi ... index.html
