DevBlog - 5th June - Design Review: New Fairy Quest

Not sure if this deserves a topic any more, since they have said they will be posting shorter blog entries more frequently.

It might sound like a simple thing to write a quest brief: come up with a cool story and write them down.

The reality of it is that it is a lot more complicated than that, and turning our initial ideas into a fully described quest, ready for development is fun but can be hard work. I was asked to do a design review for the third and final Fairy Tale quest, and that's what I'm going to talk about today.

Most of the time, Mod Mark does quest design reviews himself, but this time he was too busy, so he asked me to do it. Mod Mark had already approved the bare bones of the idea, but I needed to help the developer turn that into a full brief, ready for final approval. In doing this, there is a lot to think about.

This quest continues the Fairy Tale series, and so has to use the same style and tone. Fairies in RuneScape are a curious race. On the one hand, Zanaris is a strange and whimsical place, where the absurd is normal (take the cow-powered windmill, for example), but, alongside that, Mod Greg had created a story that dealt with some serious themes: betrayal, war and resistance. Fairy Tale 3 has to take those themes to a conclusion, and add something new and unexpected as well.

I also had to ensure we werent repeating story and game-play ideas used elsewhere in game, that the story was internally consistent, and that we could explain all of the plot elements in a way that fits in with the canon of Runescape lore. We also had to make sure that those elements that added to skills or acted as rewards were suitable for the game as a whole.

Finally, since this is the finale, this quest has to be a fitting end to the story. Working with the developer on designing a boss fight for this was challenging. It needed to be new but work with the engine, epic enough to act as a climax, interesting enough to be a challenge to the player and also make sense in the context of the narrative. It needs to feel like the end of the story - not just another fight and reward.

Although it took considerable rewriting and tweaking, we have a brief now that were happy with. there are some cool ideas in there that Im looking forward to see in game! Development on this is starting soon. Im sure well tell you more about the quest as things progress, but if you want a little teaser, dont forget to brush your teeth!

Post it here instead? I know you can update the first post.

Wongton is better than me in anyway~~

It's a new update, so it gets a own thread. Just like all other development diaries that is been posted.

Sound interesting though

Brushing my teeth will help me beat the quest?

Well... Okay... You're the boss...

Yeah, I am confused on that last bit as well. But this blog wasn't really too exciting for me, most of this is understood to hopefully the average scaper. It was to me at least.

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

I think they are referring to tooth fairies, anyway, good read, but less informative than the last ones, but I they are gonna be released more than once a week, I'm in.

The Tooth Fairy.

The Tooth Fairy...really? Originally I hated the idea...then I liked it...I'm hating it again though.

I'm interested as to when this was actually written to be honest...We received the Chaos Elemental's message months ago and according to this the only thing that had been approved was that the conclusion to the fairy quests would happen. Nothing else had been done, and in that time the only thing that had been done was getting a write up on the plot? It kind of worries me how work efficient Jagex really is...

More importantly though, it scares me to know where the Myreque quest, that was talked about in the same Chaos Elemental letter, is in its development. The desert quest seemed to be close to completion...but fairies weren't even close...was the Myreque somewhere in between? *sigh*

We already got the desert quest.

I think this is the problem with giving away even the slightest hints....you folks inflate these ideas too much. Then they are mistaken to imply that there is a set schedule or point of development made up in your head that you impart too much faith in.

So, what, this is taking the place of development diary? And it's not on the front page?

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

The Tooth Fairy.

Damn, you beat me to it. ::'

As for the boss fight, possibly a similar battle between you & Zanik versus Bandos Avatar?

Of course, in this case, Zanik could be replaced by hundreds of resisting fairies. The boss itself could be the Fairy Grandfather aided by those Orks wandering around Zanaris.

From the diary, it sounds like it's going to be unique, can't wait to try it out. :)

Only fear God,

The weakness of the hard.

Fairy GODfather, not grandfather.

But I want this trilogy to END!

Yup, it'll be the third and last quest in the series. Not much can happen anyway, we got Zanaris full of Orks and the Godfather, and a hideout of the Fairy Resistance full of Fairies and the Queen. You will probably do some scouting or invent a secret weapon, and after that they'll clash.

Due to my epic stats, I have now started WGS (but I still hate spoilers).

The secret weapon? A tooth decay ray that will signal to the Tooth Fairy to painfully extract the enemies' teeth in the most gruesome fashion. Afterwards, the enemy gets a lollipop.

This is the imagination of one lacking sleep, sorry.
