There is one reason I can't stand HD...

Featured Replies

The fog. I hate seeing runescape covered in it. Compared to low detail, I feel like my range of sight is so limited. I know the black screen that blocks unloaded areas isn't much better, but at least runescape isn't enshrouded in that ugly mist. So what do you prefer tif? The black screen or the fog?

I assure you this is not a sig.

Isn't it possible to turn it off?

You can turn Fog off and HD gives you more vision in Fullscreen.

I much prefer the fog. The LOS feels alot smaller to me on low detail without the fog, but perhaps that's just the widescreen.

The only thing I hate about high detail is how atrocious robes look.

If your talking about the option in game to turn off fog, it turns off the stuff like in Dust devil's lair. I'm talking about the white background for unloaded things. I'm pretty sure you can't get rid of it.

Still unloaded things load.

In Standard its just a black wall instead of Fog its so unrealistic.

It may make it look more realistic, but couldn't they have found a better way? Is it possible to have everything in our range of sight loaded? Then we wouldn't need either. I'm not sure if runescape can handle this though.

No, the Fog option in the graphics setting will remove that fog at the edge of the map which "smooths" the edge of the map. It wont turn off the Dust Devil's Lair Fog.

As far as the color white, HD map edges change color depending on your location. If you are in a location like a swamp, the edge of the map will turn black, if your in a light area like Edgeville, it will be white. Its just a location function of HD to give a better sense of your surroundings.

I kind of like that function personally.

In standard detail it's black instead, and the range of sight is the exact same. The reason the range of sight may feel smaller in HD is because you have a bigger screen. So don't worry, it's the same range of sight.

Yes, that sig was annoying.

Still once Jagex improves graphics we may be able to see the sky,the sun,the moon, and fog.

Gief less lagg? Or does this get less after a visiting an area a few times in HD?!

That doesn't really bother me much...

The main thing that bother's me in HD is the lighting, it's always so dark!

I always put it on as bright as possible but it's still really dark in dungeons and stuff.

That was the point of the new graphics, to make dungeons and so on look more realistic. You wouldn't walk into a underground dungeon and expect it to be like daylight would you?

I much prefer the HD graphics, they are definitely an improvement no matter what.

Yeah. So change the lighting detail to low.

With fog off and lighting detail on low HD is much better in terms of vision.

While i love the detail in HD, I can't stand the lag. I prefer the fast paced, non-lag of low detail.

Like other objects placed within the game, the fog's presence has a purpose.

Let me try to explain.

Runescape is a game that caters to the masses and runs itself on a web browser. It is impossible for Jagex to load up (or unpack) all the scenery and remove the fog on startup as it will take up precious memory space, both on your computer and their servers. You'll suddenly find yourselves complaining (on RSOF's rants section, no less) of the awfully slow startup, the lag when you attempt to run, etc.

On the other side, Jagex faces the risk of losing customers who do not have a Runescape-optimized computer and are incapable of loading all the scenery during startup. With the involvement of money, the profit-driven organisation (i.e. Jagex) will veto this suggestion and pass it off as an infeasible one (since anything that is unprofitable is also infeasible).

Runescape HD is an excellent implementation. It allows players with more capable computers to fully immense themselves while providing others with the option of playing in low detail. Also, it retains Runescape's popular in-browser characteristic, which Jagex have found to be a selling point.

The downside? You might have to stick with the fog for a little while.

Yeah i had the same problem too, especially at experiments. You just have to turn the light flickering or *something* like that on the display menu to either "low" or "off". It really helps, seriously- although I wish Jagex made it a bit brighter on its own anyway.

wow, is a little bit of fog really that big of a deal? and it aint hard to turn off either

I'm gonna be walking down an alley in varrock, and walka is going to walk up to me in a trench coat and say "psst.. hey man, wanna buy some sara brew"

walka92- retired with 99 in attack, strength, defence, health, magic, ranged, prayer and herblore and 137 combat. some day i may return to claim 138 combat, but alas, that time has not yet come

Yes, because realism is what a fantasy game is all about.
