MMG recently did a QnA with the Mechscapeworld fansite

In this QnA he revealed that when he and Andrew played the completed game, they felt it was not up to their standards and decided to stop trying to "fix" the game and just build a new one. He also revealed that the name of Mechscape is in fact Stellar Dawn.

 

Now it makes sense that the previous head of mechscape, Henrique Olifiers, resigned.

 

This means that the game will not be released around the holiday period of 2009 as was previously confirmed, but late next year.

Nooooooo..

 

Ah well, at least they're pushing quality over speed. Still, I feel this could be like the MA release - overhyped and gigantic expectations for something that's decent and fun, but not as amazing as everyone thinks. I'm hoping they don't follow that path again.

Shame it isn't coming out this year and it's only a chance for next year. Must be some serious things they want to change. I hope they figure out PVP in the new game before it comes out (I heard them talking about that so I am interested in how that works.) I just can't wait for that day! And what is with Space Pies. Did I miss something? :P

I highly doubt the CEO of a multi-million dollar company would do something so stupid

I thought they were busy to make it perfect.. meaning all the basics of the game had been done. Wouldn't that mean they simply made a mess of the whole developing process if they only discovered just know that the game isn't what it should be?

Some things don't add up. Mod MMG and Mod Mark G do a Q&A with Mechscapeworld then a day later a video is released showing Mechscape from a year ago or so, then they say they scrapped the idea.

Yes you can expect more regular info on Stellar Dawn from us in the future, I'm not 100% sure it is going to be released in 2010 although I certainly do hope so, I am however 100% sure that it wont be this year as initially thought.

I suppose it is important to also add that when I was initially saying "soon", I really did believe that from everything we were being told and naturally gave that feedback in good faith. That is no longer the case and whilst I can understand news of a delay is frustrating to you all as much as it is to myself, I can assure you all that everyone involved in this project is doing their best to ensure we get a great game in the best possible time frame.

I doubt it will be the next Duke Nukem Forever. This is Jagex we're talking about here, they're like the VALVe of the MMO world!

Except that Valve has a proven track record of excellent titles when the only thing Jagex has is a click-based browser MMO full of 12 year old kids. ;)

 

A more accurate comparison to Valve in terms of the MMO world would be Blizzard.

After working on the game for so long, I can understand why Olifiers resigned.

 

If they scrapped the whole thing, there is no way on earth they would be able to get it launched by 2010, especially not Q1.

In the end it's not costing them anything really. They've learned so much from creating Mechscape that even runescape has been effected. Without the work done on Mechscape we would not have HD, full screen, and tons of new features that are not even out yet (Specular Lighting, Bloom, skybox's).

 

Not to mention Stellar Dawn, which is the new Mechscape, is going to be so much better than what they had created before.

 

Although, I do sort of wish they could start a small limited game of the unreleased Mechscape. It would be cool to play the game that never got released, and in it's own way should be considered SDC (Stellar Dawn Classic). They could take the game off servers when it's time to release Stellar Dawn.

Did they REALLY have to abandon ship so late in the project!?

 

I waited long enough :evil: . They could at least release the Beta version as a teaser....

That can't be right.. there hasn't been a hint of failure from any of them, and to cancel it this late? Just because something doesn't meet their standards doesn't mean they won't release it. BAHA!

Well I found the link while looking at another forum. I've personally never heard of gamesindustry.biz but if it's a legit article then wow, although I can understand why they'd do it.
