Okaaay... if he really confused those two things (bubble-gum and something lethal), then Darwinism is was at work here. (The stupid/weak/etc die, the strong/smart/etc survive)

Honestly, he should have known better than to be eating or chewing ANYTHING in a laboratory.

 

Especially since there are people that are idiots in the laboratory who would do screwball things such as carrying an open container with chlorine gas billowing out of it or playing with lithium/potassium. I've seen people do the aforementioned, as well as dumping an acid down the sink instead of properly disposing the substance in a container. I've seen someone touch test tubes after heating it up over the burner and then freaking out because it burned them.

Citric acid is commonly used to add a sour taste to food. I'm not going to blame him for pretty much squeezing lemon juice into his food, but assuming he was not in a lab at the time (do we know this?), why did he have explosive substances?

I'm a chemistry student and I've been yelled at for having my water bottle (closed) out of my backpack during a lab session. Any food or drink on a lab is only asking for gasses and other things around to be absorbed into it, that's why you never chew gum on a lab. So I guess this guy wasn't on one, and if he was he was pretty damn stupid to dip his gum on ANYTHING while on there, since it's really easy to get substances confused when they look almost identical and you have all them scattered around your table...

You know, I feel bad for him.... But a part of me wants to wonder what he was thinking. The other part of me just wants to laugh.... :(

A weak organic acid. Like I said, that part of the story isn't dangerous, it's the possession of explosives that is.
