Especially since there are people that are idiots in the laboratory who would do screwball things such as carrying an open container with chlorine gas billowing out of it or playing with lithium/potassium. I've seen people do the aforementioned, as well as dumping an acid down the sink instead of properly disposing the substance in a container. I'm a chemistry student and I've been yelled at for having my water bottle (closed) out of my backpack during a lab session. Any food or drink on a lab is only asking for gasses and other things around to be absorbed into it, that's why you never chew gum on a lab. So I guess this guy wasn't on one, and if he was he was pretty damn stupid to dip his gum on ANYTHING while on there, since it's really easy to get substances confused when they look almost identical and you have all them scattered around your table...
