Honest1
This post is by no mean's about trying to petition for a new skill, but instead for the entertainment. I think it would be fun to see what kind of skill we would have in Runescape if Jagex was to drop in on us, and say "this is the discussion thread, GO!" How this worksThe skill we will be working on is Sailing. I will be updating this first post every day with all the new information on the skills as we obtain it. Please read everybody's reply and make constructive comments, and lets give this new skill some depth. Remember this is totally for fun, and so lets keep it that way. And GO! The skill has been updated, but obviously we'll need to fill in some areas..............................................................................SailingBy: The tip.it community The new skill of sailing is perhaps the most diverse skill of all. This new skill is a p2p only skill that uses many of the other skills to use this one. Are you able to handle the waters? New dangers lie ahead: PvP- All waters have been designated pvp zones. This new PVP system comes with a whole new scoreing system. Choose your path. Safe Zones: All major ports are considered safe zones. A player can enter your ship by being in your clan chat. In order to keep your ship from drifting away be sure to create an anchor for your ship using the smithing skill. Pirate- Become a Pirate by initiating combat with other ships out on the sea. For each person you kill you'll gain a rank in piracy. As a pirate bounty is plentiful, but danger is higher.Hero- Help out ships that are being pillaged by Pirates, and defeat the Pirate to earn a hero's rank. Pirates will be flagged to spot easier. Bounty won't be as high, however risk is less. Use new types of cannon balls in order to fire upon other ships, and board them. Hire a crew to help protect you and your ship, all bounty found during the experiance will be split up through the loot share system with the ships owner getting a larger cut. Build your own ship by use of new Ship planks which can be gotten off new trees found near all the ports. Ships for combat or travel.Combat Ships are more heavily armored, but move slower.Travel ships can outrun combat ships, but are not very heavily fortified. Traveling Vessels (Has few Weaponry)Level 1- RaftLevel 15- Row BoatLevel 20- Paddle BoatLevel 25- Small Sail BoatLevel 30- SchoonerLevel 40- Medium Sail BoatLevel 50- Hovercraft (After gnome quest)Level 50- Viking Long ShipLevel 65- Large Sail BoatLevel 75- CruiserLevel 85- Chinchompa Powered YachtLevel 95- Giant Sail Boat (Sail Bears a symbol that is chosen similar to acquiring the Construction family crest)Combat Vessels (For Combat)Level 30- Tall Ship (Pirate Ship)Level 40- GalleonLevel 60- Dwarf WarshipLevel 60- Gnome WarshipLevel 60- FrigateLevel 70- Great Cannon BoatLevel 80- Man-o-WarLevel 90- DestroyerLevel 95- Zamorakian FlagshipLevel 95- Saradominist FlagshipLevel 95- Guthixian Flagship You will need a Hammer, saw, and new boat planks which can be crafted using a knife on the new plank logs in order to construct a ship. For sail boats you can also use the crafting skill to make new sails for your boats. New MobsDiscover new areas, and new mobs that drop special loot only findable out at sea. Player owned citiesPlayer owned Cities have now also been introduced with this release. Players will have the ability to discover unknown territory, and for those exclusively wealth enough to own it can purchase a land plot and build a city that everybody can visit. Do you think you have what it takes to be the most popular island? Create your own shop terminals, and stock them. New Slayer TasksThere's rumors of monsters at sea, you will be sent on a hunt to fight the seas largest creatures. If you think the great white whale is tough then this might not be the task for you. New FishNow you can use the fishing skill to find new fish that would not normally be found through traditional fishing. 99 Fishing 11/12/2006 790th fisher to 99Former Tip.it Events team leader

Serpent Eye
Of course it had to be Sailing... I think Sailing by itself would be a terribly boring skill, so I've tried to think of how it could incorporate some other skills: [hide]Combat: Dare I say it, the ability to engage in combat with other ships? Maybe as a minigame. Introduction of ship cannons. Construction - Allows you to build your own ship. Your level affects the size of ship you are able to build, as well as what type of wood you are able to build the ship with. Crafting - Allows you to weave your own sailing cloth/sew together your own sails. Your level affects what size the sails are (i.e., a Large ship requires 1 Large sail, 1 Small sail, etc.) Fishing - Sailing grants you access to new fishing locations in the middle of ocean waters. Your level affects what type of fish you can catch (i.e., deep sea fishing requires a higher level) Ranged: See Combat section above. Your level affects the distance/accuracy at which your cannons can fire. Smithing: Allows you to smith your own sea cannons, anchors, etc. Woodcutting: Not so sure about this, but maybe the introduction of a new tree, the wood of which you need to build your own ship.[/hide] Some other things: A higher Sailing level means you can travel longer distances, maybe even discovering a new island(s).A higher Sailing level means you can travel between any pre-existing location (i.e., travel between Port Sarim and Karamja)A higher level allows you to bring other players on your ship with you. The higher your level, the more players you can bring.
The Dark Lord
Well, I would advocate free-roam sailing in RuneScape's oceans. You move around just like you would for walking/running. You can encounter pirates (which appear like free-roaming monsters except one monster can move freely throughout the oceans, appearing like a random event.). You can fight the pirates and loot the ships. Random islands can be generated, and these islands can be looted. There could also be a PvP system where another player's ship can engage in combat with yours. As you progress through the skill, you can create bigger and stronger warships. A merchanting minigame can be tacked onto the skill where you have to deliver goods from one port town to another, kind of like Gnome Cuisine except with better rewards. There could be a PvP safe-zone near the coastal areas of some landmasses, but most of the open waters would be PvP (on every world). You engage in combat the same way you would another player on a PvP world. In order to construct a ship, you make use of shipyards (located in most port towns). You can also hire NPCs to help you construct a ship while you're offline. An NPC monarch might even privateer you and have you attack another kingdom's merchant ships. -------------- In all seriousness, this could potentially be a good skill. It just depends on how it is constructed and how rewarding it is. Short form of my suggestion:-Free-roam sailing in all of RuneScape's oceans-PvP combat (ship vs ship)-Progressively better ships for various functions (warships, merchant ships, etc)-Shipyards in every (or most) port town(s)-Hiring of NPCs-A merchant minigame (like Gnome Cuisine)-A privateering/piracy minigame-Ability to combat NPC ships and raid islands SWAG Mayn U wanna be like me but U can't be me cuz U ain't got ma swagga on. The Dark Lord
Hmm. Just thought of a money-drain for this skill. In order to get supplies for ship-building, you must purchase timber. Timber would be sold in an infinite bulk, but it would also be untradeable among players. If a player wishes, they may also hire an NPC crew in order to protect the ship while it's docked or to help board another ship. However, mercenaries must be paid (like a butler). Payment will be demanded by mercenaries only when the ship is at a port. Port towns can also sell a limited supply of cannonballs and repair kits. Junkmutt
Has anyone here seen waterworld? The inclusion of sailing could lead to player-owned-cities (or player stocked NPC ran cities <--probably this one). Kata_Phfract__the_slayer
Aviationair sailing? posable stunt, you could sail your ship at high speed in to a ramp to jump over things. might be skillcape emote. with construction, you can but a ship portal in your portal room. if you have a butler he/she/it can take loot and bank it for you. arr! level 1, bronze cannon / cannon ammo.it does not take a lot of guess work where the rest of the metals go... ammonormal cannon ball. all rounder, cheap.chain shot. extra damage to anything that is not the ships hull, eg people.grape shot. weak but very efective v people and small objects.heated shot. normal cannon ball, but has a chance to set things on fire for poison like damage, fun to aim at the opther ships gun power hold...heavy cannon ball. powerfull vs ships hull and hard objects. sailing related quests.the archyologist's (finealy) plan to sail to the kudos iland, but something goes rong and you have to sail your way there and save them. reward is part of the pirate treshure found on the iland + some sailing xp. billions of pirate quests. billions more pirate v ninja quests. the pirate from pirates treshure, after helping him with the first quest, takes you on another quest. this time your not looking for treshure, he's geting revenge on a gang of pirates that you have to help him defeat. reward is an untradeable sailing item, idk what it should be. even more pirate quests. somewhere, a blockade has stoped who ever your helping, from geting somewhere or something, and you have to sail around the blockade (maybe defeat a ship or 2) and then attack the army from behind. makeing a land baced combat quest with sailing as just a side skill. I'm a Brony and proud of it!
SwreeTak
Seems like a lot of tiffers have thought a whole lot about sailing. Myself I have, after have read so many threads about it, thought about it a little as well. I have read through the suggestions this far and I think that they all are awesome. Great work TIF :).I have two suggestions myself. The first one is that the skill would be member's only. Since sailing would be such an awesome skill it would make a lot of F2P's becoming members :D  The second suggestion I have is that the ports and shipyards you are able to use depends on your level. When you're level 1 you can just use say Port Sarim. Once you reach level 15 you can use the shipyard in Catherby, and when you have achieved level 25 you can use the port in Brimhaven. And so on.I don't think all ports should have shipyards. Some ports should be just ports, but you should be able to buy material at every port. Great thread! Add me if you so wish: SwreeTak

Peronix
As interesting as the whole sailing idea is, I don't think "sailing" is a general enough aptitude to be adopted as a RS skill. And besides, several of the components of the "skill" would seem to fit better into other skills. Building the ships would seem to fit better into construction. Firing cannons into ranged. Balancing on beams and swinging through the air on ropes into agility. Not that I'm opposed to the idea of player owned ships, it's just that I don't think it should be a skill. So most sailing items are made from other skills but give sailing xp that unlocks the new boats new ports and new game areas. So ways to train Sailing and what skills they fall under:Smithing- cannons, cannon balls, other cannon ammo, armor for the higher leveled sailing vessels, weapons and armour for your crewCrafting- Making and patching sails, fancy cloths for your wenches and seamen, low level leather armor, high level sniper/ranger armor for crew.Construction- making the boats hulls and other parts of the shipsFishing- if using your vessel for deep sea fishing(new fish?) Herblore- potions for you and your crew (special new sailing potions) maybe better vision temp boost in your line of site and so on...Woodcutting- add on to the sawmill mini game where you cut the long beams for use on sailing vesselsCooking- foods you carry with on your sailing journeys heals injured crewmenHunter- used along with fishing catch whales(give hunter, fishing, and sailing xp)Magic- help type spells to use on the ship and crew (like vengeance can only be used once every so often)Sailing- doing tasking and missions for various NPCs results in direct sailing xp.(much like slayer tasks rewards from smoking kills) (edit for for spell checking) http://www.clanhavok.net/

Tact
The entire system of free-roam sailing reminds me of catching Pokemon. You (the trainer) sails (walks around) the ocean (the tall grass) until you encounter a pirate (a wild Pokemon), which takes you to a battle screen (a battle screen). Cannon salvos (Pokemon attacks) are exchanged. If you defeat the pirate (the wild Pokemon), you receive some experience and loot (some experience and a Pokemon). Rinse and repeat. This would open the way for a lot of Pokemon puns, but I shall resist.
