[hide=answer the questions first]LONDON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A survey of British youngsters suggests 26 percent of the country's under-16 population erroneously believe bacon comes from sheep.

The survey of 800 children and adults, conducted for the Home Grown Cereals Authority and the National Farmers' Union, also suggests 29 percent of youngsters believe oats grow on trees and 17 percent of both children and adults are under the false impression that eggs are a necessary ingredient in bread, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

"Everyone should know where primary foods like cereals are grown and the role they play as part of a healthy, balanced diet," said Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers' Union. "More than half the food consumed in the U.K. is produced on British farms, yet the public, and especially young people, are unable to make this connection."[/hide]

Call me crazy but if you don't know where something comes from then I don't think you should really be eating it.

I don't know whether its the fact I've been brought up near farms or the fact I'm a fussy eater, but I find the results of the survey extremely worrying.

I mean one of the most commonly eaten cuts of meat and people don't know the animal it comes from.

I'm also curious on the results tip.it gets too as I'm sure it can't be as bad as the results in the article.

Anyone else worried by the results?

I wasn't sure about the eggs in bread..I've never made bread and don't know too much about it, I was leaning more towards 'no' though.

I wonder in which areas they conducted these surveys?

I could see the egg question confusing people (not everyone bakes), but there's no excuse to not know what animal bacon comes from or whether oats grow on trees. The question is where does the blame for this failure lie: with the schools or with the parents? Or is it a little of both?

Apparently common knowledge isn't so common anymore. :wall:

The egg question caught me out to be honest.

Thought eggs might have went into the bread dough (or whatever it's called, i don't bake much/at all). Thinking about it now, it seems a bit more obvious.

There's no excuse for not knowing the other two, however.

3/3 here. If eggs were used in bread (which they can be) it would taste like quiche.

And yes the results worry me, but its really nothing new. Nobody cares about basic practical knowledge anymore.

The Bread question was the only on that made me think for a moment. The rest, especially the bacon question, should have been common knowledge.

Huh, The bread question was easily a no for me but I had to think on the oats... And I got it wrong

Ah well, I hate oats anyways.

Also, it's possible to make bacon from other animals such as turkeys.

True but the bacon you would get at a supermarket would be Pig.

100% on this quiz.

The general public don't have a clue about a lot of things. My favorite is watching "Jay Walking" on the Tonight Show/Jay Leno Show. He'd show different pictures of well known politics ( ie. Joe Biden) and many of the people wouldn't have any idea. I was embarrassed for them. Why do we give these people voting rights?
