January 25, 201016 yr I'm not sure if this has been posted if it has please delete this topic. [hide=answer the questions first]LONDON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A survey of British youngsters suggests 26 percent of the country's under-16 population erroneously believe bacon comes from sheep. The survey of 800 children and adults, conducted for the Home Grown Cereals Authority and the National Farmers' Union, also suggests 29 percent of youngsters believe oats grow on trees and 17 percent of both children and adults are under the false impression that eggs are a necessary ingredient in bread, the Daily Mail reported Thursday. "Everyone should know where primary foods like cereals are grown and the role they play as part of a healthy, balanced diet," said Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers' Union. "More than half the food consumed in the U.K. is produced on British farms, yet the public, and especially young people, are unable to make this connection."[/hide] Call me crazy but if you don't know where something comes from then I don't think you should really be eating it.I don't know whether its the fact I've been brought up near farms or the fact I'm a fussy eater, but I find the results of the survey extremely worrying. I mean one of the most commonly eaten cuts of meat and people don't know the animal it comes from. I'm also curious on the results tip.it gets too as I'm sure it can't be as bad as the results in the article. Anyone else worried by the results? January 25, 201016 yr I could answer all the questions correctly, but I dont know, I'm not really worried. [Maybe because I dont live in the UK...] Perhaps all these "youngsters" are just lacking in common knowledge ?
January 25, 201016 yr I wasn't sure about the eggs in bread..I've never made bread and don't know too much about it, I was leaning more towards 'no' though. I wonder in which areas they conducted these surveys? January 25, 201016 yr I could see the egg question confusing people (not everyone bakes), but there's no excuse to not know what animal bacon comes from or whether oats grow on trees. The question is where does the blame for this failure lie: with the schools or with the parents? Or is it a little of both? Apparently common knowledge isn't so common anymore. :wall: Check out my blog to read the Adventures of a Big Damn (F2P) Hero. January 25, 201016 yr The egg question caught me out to be honest. Thought eggs might have went into the bread dough (or whatever it's called, i don't bake much/at all). Thinking about it now, it seems a bit more obvious. There's no excuse for not knowing the other two, however. January 25, 201016 yr The bread one kind of caught me off guard, I had to give it a thought, but it still should be common sense though since bread is basically made up of flour + water + yeast.
January 25, 201016 yr I remember making bread with flour and water in Lumbridge. Who'd know Runescape would teach me something useful? This signature is intentionally left blank.
January 25, 201016 yr I remember making bread with flour and water in Lumbridge. Who'd know Runescape would teach me something useful?Yeah, I got that one wrong  I always thought baking = eggs, I guess not!
January 25, 201016 yr 3/3 here. If eggs were used in bread (which they can be) it would taste like quiche. And yes the results worry me, but its really nothing new. Nobody cares about basic practical knowledge anymore. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti
January 25, 201016 yr I've only baked pizza dough before which is close to bread and I believe I used eggs in it, but bread didn't seem like it would have eggs in it so I put I don't know.
January 25, 201016 yr I think when eggs are used it is to thicken up the batter like in pizza dough and pie crusts.

January 25, 201016 yr 3/3. I'm not too worried, but that's probably because I'm aware to the fact the common sense really is not common for quite a while.
January 25, 201016 yr I have to wonder if it would really matter whether or not young children knew this. I mean, I don't think kids are going to care what the food is as long as it tastes good. Still got 3/3, though. The idea of egg in bread is kind of disturbing to me. I painted some stuff and put it on tumblr
January 25, 201016 yr I got all of them right, except for the bread one. Hey, call my grandma crazy, but SHE makes amazing bread, and she always stuck eggs in it.

January 25, 201016 yr The Bread question was the only on that made me think for a moment. The rest, especially the bacon question, should have been common knowledge. January 25, 201016 yr Huh, The bread question was easily a no for me but I had to think on the oats... And I got it wrong  Ah well, I hate oats anyways. Also, it's possible to make bacon from other animals such as turkeys.

January 25, 201016 yr Woo. 100% I am pro with knowledge! #KERR2016/17/18/19/20/21. #rpgformod
January 25, 201016 yr You'd be surprised how much the general population doesn't know about where their food comes from. catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream
January 25, 201016 yr 3/3. I'm a vegetarian, always have been, and even I know where bacon comes from. Eggs can be used in bread, but aren't necessary. The oats question, in my opinion, was a no brainer.
January 25, 201016 yr 100% on this quiz. The general public don't have a clue about a lot of things. My favorite is watching "Jay Walking" on the Tonight Show/Jay Leno Show. He'd show different pictures of well known politics ( ie. Joe Biden) and many of the people wouldn't have any idea. I was embarrassed for them. Why do we give these people voting rights? January 26, 201016 yr 2/3, because I made bread with eggs in them before. Or maybe those were cakes
