War Films

Anyone know any good war films? In particular I'm looking for a film about special forces like the SAS, Navy Seals, or general spec ops-y sort of stuff. A nice movie about the Africa Campaign from WWII would also be cool, especially about Rommel's exploits. However, anything that's just particularly interesting is welcome.

I've already seen a lot of the more famous ones like:

Saving Private Ryan

Black Hawk Down

Pearl Harbor

The Hurt Locker

Platoon

Thin Red Line

Miracle at St. Anna

We Were Soldiers

Windtalkers

Flags of our Fathers (Haven't seen Letters for Iwo Jima yet though, anyone seen it?)

The Pianist

Defiance

Valkyrie

Inglourious Basterds

Enemy at the Gates

Jarhead

The Kingdom

Battle of the Bulge

Most of the above list I've seen multiple times. I've also rewatched Band of Brothers a whole bunch of times and am working my way through The Pacific (Not as good as BoB imo).

I've also actually watched most of Downfall, even more than the small clips that get turned into "Hitler gets banned from Runescape".

There have been movies I'm interested, but haven't gotten around to watching:

Schindler's List

Top Gun

Kelly's Heroes (seen a tiny bit of it)

Devil's Brigade

Das Boot

In the Valley of Elah

Full Metal Jacket

Apocalypse Now

If anyone could give a recommendation or review on any of the above movies that would be great.

Finally, I'd just like to discuss war films in general. From a modern perspective, I'd have to say Black Hawk Down is my favourite one, followed by maybe Hurt Locker. From a WWII perspective, it's hard to beat Band of Brothers even though it's not really a movie. The Pianist was a really good non-combat WWII movie. I haven't really taken a liking to the Vietnam films out there, but We Were Soldiers was alright for its action scenes and Platoon for its "zomg war is hell" motif.

Have you wateched "Joyeux Noel"? We've actually just started watching it in our history class, it is really interesting. It's about a ceasefire the German/Scotland/French troops had on Christmas Eve. I think it's pretty cool.

Really recommend Come And See. Really violent, very true to what they did to my people, my Grandparents lived in Belarus at the time, and the stuff in that movie could of happened to them.

If you do things right people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

All Quiet on the Western Front? You covered a big chunk I can't think of any others.

Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/

It's like the Korean equivalent of Saving Private Ryan in terms of action, and it's shot quite well. Lots of hand to hand combat in trenches (hitting with guns and bayonets), which you never see in war movies.

Basically, two South Korean brothers get drafted into the army to fight the North, and the older brother wants the younger one to live so that he can go to school and make the family proud and all that. So he starts taking on all the riskiest missions in the hopes that he will get a medal and use HIS free ticket home for his brother.

9/10, the subtitles are way worth it

A few more:

Hamburger Hill

The Patriot

Behind Enemy Lines

Enemy at the Gates

Cold Mountain

The Pianist

I'm reading a Vietnam book right now called Matterhorn...I really hope it gets made into a movie. The story has the potential to be in the same caliber as Platoon and FMJ.

Not what you are looking for, but check out Talvisota (Finnish winter war), there's also a tv-version which is 265min long. It is really really good.

I actually remember someone recommending something of the sort to me. They also seemed to agree that it was worth watching.

Schinder's List is a must-see.

In terms of older movies, I'd say watch "the longest day" and "the great escape".

EDIT: Ahh yes, and TORA TORA TORA. Couldn't remember the name of it.

i consider that action and not a war.

I own sniper 1-3 three though and find them greatly entertaining.

You could try "The Pacific" (was this shown in the US, avid TV watchers of MM&T?). Produced by the same guys who did Band Of Brothers, but just in the pacific theatre of WW2.

TORA TORA TORA. great movie. the pearl harbor attack from the Japanese POV.

lol @ "the patriot" mentioned earlier. that was a crap movie. i saw Glory, great movie. Gettysburg is good also. Schindlers iist isnt realy a war movie, just set in WWII time. still, one of the greatest movies of all time. what was that movie set in the philippines about that prison rescue? that movie was good.

EDIT: this one is a must see: the grave of the fireflies. not a war movie, but takes place during a war. literally made me cry.
