There's always traces on your harddrive. Something like dban makes it alot more difficult to extract info, but there's still a possibility. Just a normal formatting is no match for those tech guys to dig up the info. And also, the internet provider, if they save their data, you also have to calculate them.

They can still check your download history with your ISP.

 

Personally, I don't know how I feel about it, but I rarely download anything anyway.

First off, I am going to say that piracy is not theft. It's copyright infringement. It doesn't make it any less of an offence; I even think that it should remain as such, even if they reform the law. Ideally, I would be happy with a good compromise between the entertainment industries and the pirates, but both sides have such silly arguments that I just can't see it happening. It's a shame that it has to come down to things like this and the Digital Economy Bill, to say the least.

 

I think this thread is somewhat of a sad reflection on today's society as well. I wonder, just how many of you have actually bought physical copies of albums? I'm not talking about those digital downloads either; there is zero sense of ownership in some music you have bought from iTunes. If you're going to pull the "they're not worth my money" argument, use this terrible hypothetical as something to think about - if you were an independent artist on a small label, how would you feel about people saying that music you put a lot of care, time and attention-to-detail into and performed, mixed and mastered it to the best of your ability, how exactly would you feel if someone told you that your music "isn't worth the money"? Probably pretty damn horrible. Don't get me wrong - I download a lot more than the average person, but I daresay I also buy a lot more than the average person too.

 

That "imminent infringement" stuff is pretty terrible showing though and that is exactly why this won't pass. I just wish we would actually get some co-operation between the two sides of the piracy argument for once.

It's about financial recompense through asset seizure & wage garnishment. A court decision is just the first step of the process.

But yeah. I'm not going to rationalise it as trying to 'fight against capitalism' - most people just file share because they can't afford the things for themselves. What is the true harm in someone getting something that they wouldn't have bought anyway?

 

The whole anime industry in the west owes it's thanks to the copyright infringement of people who upload and subtitle episodes on the internet. If people didn't copyright infringe to do this then many, many anime would never see the light of day in the west since a lot of animes only get licensed and distributed worldwide when a fanbase has been established. Can't establish a fanbase if nobody can see the work. This is just an example.

The lower price won't be worth the "hassle" of illegal downloading because a lot of people download and get half-assed results. A cheap, simple, fast media distribution system is what companies need. The principle rule of capitalism: invention is the mother of nessesity. Comapnies will need to make this new system when they need the money. Not the case right now, is it? So the companies are crying to Obama because they get a couple of billions of dollars a year when the average person gets faced with unemployment and bills. [bleep] them.

A large, extremely powerful magnet would be sufficient to do that. Every file that has been on your computer has left a trace, and the only way for this to be erased is multiple fills and formats. Or, just buy an external hard-drive and use that.

The people who hold the files and share it do (Pirate Bay), not the downloaders. From my experiences, most people don't seed (share) what they download. Plus this just shows that the efficient ones won't stop. It's like banning beer or pornography, it will continue forever.

 

So instead of banning it completely and crying to Obama, media companies should try to draw consumers away from piracy. It's like competition that can never go away so: when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Honestly didn't expect [cabbage] like this from the Democrats. Canada's new bill the conservatives want is actually decent, it makes using p2p software completely legal, at least for music, although the fine for breaking DRM is ludicrous.

 

On iTunes there is a button to de-authorize all computers, so when you transfer your music, your new computer will be the only authorized one. What I hate though is when you move an iPod touch to a new computer, all apps get deleted. You can restore them, but you loose all your data.
