I have to wonder if improving the way media is bought can compete with piracy. Isn't the whole appeal of it that it is free? Especially when pirates can and chances are will outdo whatever features the payer model has. EX would be crippling DRM in a game where a pirated version has the DRM removed.

If the media makes a simple, assessable, quick, and cheap way to give customers it's products, the product won't be worth the hassle of illegal download, since lots of people hardly knows how to use a computer.

I hate the idea of getting in trouble for putting something in my search. The government has no proof of what your real intentions were. It is very possible that I could search "How to make an explosive" out of pure curiosity and never even want to make a bomb.

I'd say it's unlikely that something like this will pass. You can't arrest everybody.

See, this is why you buy a bunch of blank CDs and just burn your collection for later transfer. Not like they can really trace that, right?

It's not whether or not this bill will actually be enforced if passed that bothers me. It's the principle that government has any right to interfere so intrusively. While most likely this may not get passed and if it even does it will not be enforced, I hate the idea of it for the same reason I hated the principle of the patriot act whether or not I was directly affected by it.

The way I see it after a few seconds of thinking, the problem with the music industry is that those who are making a lot of dough right now are making a lot of dough, and those who don't, don't. Maybe if the salaries were more equalized, then piracy wouldn't be such an economic blow to those who work in the background. An artist being paid in the millions is just as bad as a CEO accepting ridiculous perks and bonuses.

These two both make a lot of dough as far as I'm concerned. I'm talking about people who make just enough to live a decent life, and who are actually affected by piracy. If the salaries were more equal, they would not be affected by it, or at least not as hard. Clearly you can't kill piracy, and changing the music industry, as explained earlier, would only amount to amputating it further, so that's the only solution I see.

I love being prosecuted for my thoughts. Next it's going to be "if you're within 50 feet of a park and you don't have a child/are over 6 you will be charged as a pedophile." At the age of 13 I didn't have money to buy every CD I wanted to listen to. They just need to face it that P2P networking has become socially acceptable. You can't ban it, only put limits on it. Watching a movie on your computer can't compare to seeing the movie at a theater, and while some people will go with the former, most will go with the latter.

We've also got a huge population and I'm pretty sure one of the 'A's in RIAA is America, so piracy's probably the lesser of two evils for a big part of it.

Piracy is terrible for the economy, and turning a blind eye to it is like telling all the people who work for these companies that they don't need to feed their kids.

 

It might be easy to say that movie + music stars dont need the money, and you might be right, but there are hundreds of other people who are involved in the production of the product, and will suffer with continued piracy.

There is actually no conclusive proof that piracy has hurt the music/media industries profits by significant amounts. A lot of their 'evidence' is biased and used just to lobby Governments and show people "LOOK WE CAN'T AFFORD TEN NEW CARS EACH IF YOU POOR PEOPLE DON'T START PAYING UP!!" The thing is a lot of the 'music industry' are just executives and people with no talent. The actual artists and musicians that we support and like won't get a lot of the money we pay for their album. It'll go to the fat cat sat at the top of their music industry empire. To me, it would be *much* better to download an album and then, realising that you like the band, go to a concert and buy merchandise. These things are where the real people that deserve the money get their money from.

It is pretty much a fact that the MPAA and RIAA are basically dangling money under US politicians in an effort to get what they want. It's ridiculous that people like that could influence the political system so much.

Problem with this is, if the label doesn't sell records they won't pay band-x to go on tour.

Personally i see illegal downloading as a crime, which seems to be a minority opinion on this forum.
