*downloads AlphaVespucci (mapping program)*

*tries to generate a map of my current (new) world*

*it generates a 19,552x33,232 pixel map that none of my image editors can even open*

... Well, then o.o

EDIT: GIMP's opening it, but it's using over a gig of ram to do it >_>

EDIT (again): Nope, it froze up at 1.2 gigs of ram usage. From what I saw of the Windows preview program (before it locked up on me), it seems that there's a bunch of singular map chunks waaay out in the middle of nowhere that I haven't explored, yet they're lit up like I did. That accounts for the titanic map size, but I'm playing around with the options to see if I can get it to just generate a map of the actual area I've explored.

EDIT 3:

*sets AV to split the map into 30 pieces*

*now has a folder that's slowly generating 900 images, 100 ish so far are almost completely blank*

... *headdesks repeatedly*

Go 18MB image, go!

The big yellow pillar is my home finding beacon, and my spawn point, and that's all that may be confusing, or so I think. Ask if questioning.

So-o, I finally got Cartograph to work (had to install some weird C++ thing), and checked out my world for caves. I have a pretty massive one under my base, but in it I've discovered nothing higher than Iron. >_>

There were two pretty massive cave clusters in the NE and SE corners of my rendered map, so I went to check the NE one out. It was across the ocean, so I ended up building myself a pretty little dock. :3 I sailed the ocean, and landed right next to an open cave. I dove straight in, and it turned out to be the most glorious cave ever. The coolest part was where like a lavafall met a waterfall and they fell together just seperated by some random cobblestone. The lava broke off somewhere else, but the water met the bottom where it just ran out before touching a massive pool of lava. I screwed up while trying to damn the water and ended up putting out all the lava, which gave me some black stone which takes forever to break and didn't give me anything with an iron pick, so I decided to give up for a while. I mined around, almost getting myself killed by unleashing lava flows several times, and then I fell into a cave system below the one with the waterfall, which pretty much had lava everwhere. But there was also the motherlode. 22 diamonds. Three-ish stacks of red dust, and gold. As well as the several metric tonnes of coal and iron. Then I made myself a Diamond pick (woo!) and found I could mine that black stuff. So, today has been pretty awesome. Found a massive cave system that actually has lava and water in it, instead of just pansy rocks, found four rock types I've never seen before, and... well, that's about it. Minecraft is [bleep]ing awesome.

Can the black stone stuff be used for picks/armour and everything, or is it just for show? I have no idea what to do with the red dust, either. I'll probably end up snorting it.

The black rocks are obsidian, their only use right now is to create portals to the nether (frame uses 14 blocks arranged in a 5x4 vertical box, taller than it is wide, also need a flint and steel to activate it). And yeah, they take ages to mine, 15 seconds or something with diamond pick, 55 seconds ish with anything else (and no drop). Oh, and obsidian is nigh unbreakable by tnt/creeper explosions, so they could be used for creeper proofing buildings as well, I suppose.

Red dust is used for making circuitry so you can connect levers/pressure pads/buttons/etc to doors and various other things. Anything beyond connecting stuff together is beyond my understanding, but this page describes the various circuits you can make:

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Redstone_Circuits

It's well beyond my comprehension for most of the circuits, but I can at least replicate a few of them >_>

I personally can't install the C++ version of Cartograph, it won't let me dl the C++ thing off the Microsoft website. So, I just use Minutor instead :P works just as well for finding ore. Which I'm doing now, since I'm sick of nearly lighting my sorry ass on fire from the branch mining I'm doing at bedrock level.

Once I have enough diamond for my purposes, I'll be heading back to the surface. I'll provide a loot screenie then, I suppose >.>

And yes, finding massive caves is always fun :P one of my favorite things to do, wander in a cave and see what I can dig up.

EDIT: The section of the branch mine I'm currently working off of:

mcbranchmine.png

I see plenty of diamonds, but none are particularly close, apart from a couple deposits. Well, at least I know where they are now >.>

Man, those circuits look complicated. ._.

Is the Nether accessible in Peaceful mode? I'd assume so, but it sounds like it's supposed to be a Risk v Reward kinda thing, so it kinda defeats the purpose if there's no enemies. Also, found out how to make buckets. There is so much in this game I had no idea I could do, haha.

Believe me, Minecraft is far more complex than it first lets on, lol >.>

And yes, the Nether is available on peaceful mode, nothing will spawn there. So, your only danger is lava, fire, lavafalls, falling into lava... you get the idea :P honestly, I didn't find much of anything interesting in there (besides the new blocks and a crapload of mushrooms, anyway), but it's still a new area to explore. I'm sure I can find a use for the different blocks, though. Such as the slow sand block - slows anything walking on it down to the equivalent of sneak mode. Placing a block of slow sand in front of a 2 high, one wide hallway entrance will make it one way, since you sink in enough that you can't walk over it, and jumping means you hit the edge of the ceiling. Can't get very easily, but it's possible if you edge along the side of the block instead of approaching it head on.... there I go, rambling again >.<

Pretty much the only thing I learned how to do properly with redstone circuits is how to use two inverters to extend the 15 block limit on how far the charge in the wire will go. Other than that, not much. Gonna look into (like I said earlier, I think) trying to use the clock generator circuits to make a working drawbridge and portcullis with the ControllerBloc mod, though.

Using the map I posted last time, I've found... quite a few diamonds, lol. Once I finish clearing the map of diamonds that I can easily access, I'm headed back up to the surface. Finally.

Reinstalled BiomeTerrain mod since I wanted to crank up the size of my biomes and have the evergreen trees back. The mod works fine with my current copy of Tree Decay/Tree Drops merge mod, Zilla. It's lagging a bit atm, but I generally hit that after playing for a few days, a reinstall of everything fixes it.

Link to the specific mod I have installed: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=71819 - the TreeDrops mod that this modder has merged with Tree Decay is at the bottom of the list of mods. I have the basic drops version installed atm, it's working fine. Dunno if it's the result of the merge of the two mods, or an update, or just your comp, Zilla. Still, worth a shot :P

Playing a new world with Cadde's ore distribution back in, and biomes set to 15.0 (10x normal size). Should be interesting once I reinstall and get rid of this lag.

The most I ever got was 4 diamonds :(

Well, I'll be damned. I was mining through some caves far away from my base, getting loads of iron. On the end of a tunnel, I saw a single water spring falling down to a 5x5 hole in the ground. I got curious so I started mining arround the spring, when I realized that there was a single block hole inside the hole going further down. Supidly enough, I jumped in, but soon regreted it. The water pushed me down and sideways, there was no light whatsoever and I couldn't get back, and to make it worse, I was drowning. Turns out the water stream actually took me to a further down in-cave, which I'm exploring right now, while trying to figure out how to get out of this place.

So Minotaur makes underground cave maps? If so, I definately have to look into that. I'm seriously completely lost in my mine, I'm considering just mining upwards to the surface. (AGAIN)

I always get biomes in my non-modded game files. :-P Though on this map I have yet to find a desert biome.

Haven't been playing Minecraft too much lately due to college, but I read a few suggestions on the official forums and I thought that the Aether & Kyther realms (Heaven/Sky & Ocean, respectively) would be not only amazing expansions, but also complementary to the Nether realm and in namesakes.

I can't find any logic behind the name given to the Ocean Realm, though. But if Notch adds any realm, I'd want him to add the Aether, as it is a more direct opposite of the nether (Above vs Below), and just add ocean biomes instead of the Kyther. Speaking of ocean biomes, natural rivers would be nice too...

I agree. With everything.

Oceans: Definitely need to be more explorable. I understand some seas you just cannot sea deep enough but others (tropical ones) you can see clearly for several feet under.

Heaven: Counter-part of the Nether. Awesome.

Guys, images really need to be in hide tags. I'm on dial-up speed 25 days of the month. That's if I don't torrent anything or download big files.

I'm on dialup all the time, and I find that hide tags do nothing to stop images from loading >.>

Maybe it's just my internet/browser, though.

Regardless, I'll stick whatever images I post from now on into hide tags (assuming I can find the button again).

stop being a download [bleep] ryan? ;)

I can't help it if 1GB/day is what I use on general internet. Find us a place and fix both our problems. Somewhere with the space to hold regular LANs is a necessity.

Got myself killed with lava. I was screwing around with an above ground flow I found (Making lava springs from random places is pretty much the funnest thing EVER), and I dropped it off a cliff, and it hit a tree, and it looked like it wasn't moving. I sigh, and jump off the cliff (because I am stupid) and land near the bottom. I climb back up with the whole jump->place block-> repeat method, looking at the ground below me. Then things around me start to get lighter (was at nighttime). Confused, I look up and oh[cabbage] the lava had like poured over the tree, and that gave it the mass needed to cascade down pretty much every side of the cliff much wider than it was when I placed it. I freak out, jump off and land in a pool of lava that had already formed around my tower. >_>

Nothing important was lost. On a more positive note, I'm expanding my one guard tower into four, each twenty paces apart, linked with a three block thickness of cobblestone. Since I'm incredibly stubborn, I'm pretty much mining through the mountain that's in my way.
