Kalafai
I have to mention one aspect that hasn't been adressed any. Prep time. Or more accurately, how you use it. Runescape: you carefully select your equipment, potions, foods, familiar, runes, and all such things based on where you are going, your levels, risk, and everything. Possibly do some dailies, or grind a couple levels. WoW: you are already wearing your best armour, carrying your best food, now spend two hours finding a group. I'd sure perfer two hours of preparing, than lookin for mah peeps.
dargonhuman
I'm a multitasker, so being able to switch tabs/windows to do other things while grinding out some automated xp (mining, smithing, etc.) is a plus. Additionally, the low system requirements make it run decently while doing other things on my dinosaur rig. Also, RS is a simple game to pick up and therefore easy to set down. Sometimes I've only got as few as 10 or 15 minutes to play. That's not enough time to do much on other MMOs, but in RS 15 minutes is more than enough time to get a load of ores, charge an inventory or two of Fire Orbs or run a round of my active Farming patches. And those are just the things I do on a regular basis. As already mentioned too, RS is cheap. $5/month means giving up one combo meal a month at a fast food restaurant for me, not a problem. Paying $15 or $25 a month means giving up some groceries or toilet paper or some other necessity that I need to survive. I'm not willing to do that for a mere game. And if things do get real tight for me and I can't afford even the $5 for a month or two, then there's still the extensive f2p area that I can hang out in until my situation improves.RS is flexible for people with all kinds of schedules, needs and circumstances. Players are allowed to come and go as they please or need, and it will be relatively unchanged. In the same light, the gameplay is extremely flexible for a multitude of play types - pvp, skillers, merchants, combat monsters, hybrids of two or all three are all welcome and supported.Simple, cheap, flexible, convenient. That's why I don't play other MMOs. Part of the Star Traks network. (^^Clicky!) Irony: An amnesiac rediscovering they have an eidetic memory. Ezz
Played WoW a bit back in 2007. Got to level 70 on my Undead Rogue and after that it just became boring. A lot of people at the max WoW level say "that's when the game begins", but that's extremely superficial. It becomes exactly like the endgame in Diablo II where you just do X instance over and over again (Baal runs anyone?) to gain better gear so that you can gain better gear. And the PvP is fun for a little while, but quickly loses purpose (I'd rather play MW2 for the same kind of "feeling"). So really, WoW was only fun for me in the beginning where I was a newb and grasping all the new concepts and interesting environments, but after that it just became boring and addicting at the same time. I prefer RS way more since to me it's not as addicting, but when it becomes addicting it's actually quite fun to me. I also quite like just the general feeling of the game, which has never really disappeared for me (like it did with WoW). But WoW vs. RS is really just a matter of preference and mind set I'd say. [insert birds flying in a circle here]Yes, that sig was annoying.
pulli23
Normally I would play "league of legends" - a purely PVP game based upon DotA (defense of the ancients, a mod for warcraft 3), you have to team with 4 others vs 5 opponents in a battle ground.. - THIS requires a lot of coordination & strategy (you have to complement each other, keep notice of the map/changes, use spells in the correct order such as not stunning the same target twice and amazing positioning game -the ones with high health are in front so they get seen & thus targeted first, then the nukes who just have to have that half a second to launch all attacks and finally your dps comes who has little health). That game has weekly tweaks (things like: reduce the cooldown of a spell from 10 seconds to 9, increase the range by "1 field") just to keep everything balanced. Runescape's PVP & PVM simply pales in comparison with this (heck even WOW is badly as it's imbalanced for pvp a lot). However, like every "team based" activity: it gets frustrating when teaming with "randoms". That is when I go back to play rs again: simply to relax a little bit while skilling! First they came to fishingand I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing Then they came to the yewsand I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews Then they came for the oresand I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak out for me. elucin8er
Play Starcraft then. It's hands down the most skillfull game in the world, and regarded as the most balanced game ever. There's massive competitions with huge prize pools, and best of all, you don't have a team to rely on, it's up to you alone in 1v1. LoL is a bit toned down in relation to DotA. There's no denying, and lane control is quite easy. I've played both, and DotA remains the highest skill level, the most balanced ( argueable with the new heros ) and still the main tournament played game. But that's it for me. Starcraft, Dota and Runescape. Skill skill chill, haha. Proper Daily blogging including Starcraft 2! Includes goal for 80+ all stats

Crimecraft is a good shooter to play (on the Unreal 3 engine) that doesn't really cost any money if you play it casually like I do. As for your fantasy-based MMO, Alganon and LOTRO for more traditional MMO, and Dungeons and Dragons Online for more action-paced. Xsyon is currently closed beta, and FFXIV is in open beta. Alganon has no subscription, and the cash shop is 100% unintrusive.
dargonhuman
I play runescape because: 5: And this is the single most important one. I can play runescape and maintain a full conversation with my girlfriend so she doesent feel like i am ignoring her. Rule 5 is the big one for me. I actually started playing wow a few months back and my girlfriend actually begged me to go back to runescape the other day. Dunno how I missed this post last night when I posted, but definitely +1 to this! ATM my girlfriend and I live somewhat far from each other so the majority of our interaction is on the phone, and there are times when she doesn't even know I'm playing RS when we talk. When I do other things (read/post threads, look at webcomics, etc.) she notices because I get quiet and sound distracted when I do say something.Interestingly, I've got mild ADD (which is why I tend to multitask) and RS distracts my ADD enough that I can focus on her better.Even more interestingly, as I was writing this I realized that RS is the perfect game for ADD people - there's such an abundance of content that, unless you're bored with RS in general, there is always something to do, from D&D's, activities and minigames to the plethora of varied skills (and the wide variety of ways to train them) to the quests and PvP content, there is literally something for almost anyone and never a shortage of things to do. If you get bored in RS, you're either not suited for MMOs, your character sucks, or you're not looking hard enough for something to do. Part of the Star Traks network. (^^Clicky!) SwreeTak
I play RS because I find it to be a challenge more than other MMOs I have tested. I love the puzzles and the logical thinking within the game. But also the variation, that you can choose to train so many different skills and that there are so many different quests, is a big reason to why I play this game. By now I have been playing RS for a long time too and I have put down a lot of time into my account, so that is of course also a reason. Finally I love the humour within the game :D All these penguins and crazy ideas Jagex have. Add me if you so wish: SwreeTak

Aside from the ADD, I have an identical situation with my girlfriend, and I have to say that it's certainly much easier to concentrate on her while playing Runescape than while playing, say, Modern Warfare 2. When we lived together, though, it was a different story. I only played Runescape when she wasn't home or had a lot of homework, 'cause the last thing I wanted was WWIII in my apartment. Maze
The RS Community is notoriously the worst MMO community of all time.I'd actually have to agree. When I played WoW, when I asked for help, people would come help me and even sometimes give me gold. Nice people. I was just Dungeoneering in RS, and I don't do it often. I was asking why they wanted all the rooms open. The response: "LOL. Noob, you probably bought ur acc. Do you no how to dung?" But fansite forums and fansite clans have a good community, though.
