das
As a serious dvd collector, I must ask - what is your stance on buying Blu-Ray? Obviously it's higher quality for films filmed in HD. But for Films like Casablanca or Animation on Blu (Charlie Brown on Blu for example) is it needed? When buying TV - Do you go SD or Blu? Sam
If it's available on Blu-Ray I tend to buy it (if it's cheap). I have a decent home cinema system with surround sound, so why not put it to good use? 2257AD.TUMBLR.COM
Hobgoblinpie
Sometimes I actually prefer DVDs over Blu-ray. Blu-ray makes it much easier to spot mistakes in Post Production. An example I have noticed is the sequence with Tobey Maguire in Spiderman 3, where he struts down a New York street. He enters a shop to buy some new clothes, and the doors swing open as soon as they close. In the Blu-ray version you can see where they've faded the shot out (you can see the doors open past the fading doors of the shot they replace). If I've ruined your viewing experience of Spiderman 3, I apologise. I do like the increase in Sound Quality however, as DVDs hooked up to my system don't have the same 'oomph' as Blu-ray disks do. My only 'Full HD' screen is m Laptop's screen, and at 15.6 inches, isn't easy to watch from a distance, so Blu-Ray versions of animated features look so much better. I probably wouldn't bother though if I had a much bigger screen. POH Agility Course, Please Support!
Verminox
I rarely buy films, but when I do I'll go for Blu Rays. The image is so much better, they're releasing the Alien anthology on Blu Ray in October and from the screens it looks like they filmed it last week. Nadril
I have a Blu-Ray player (PS3) but I don't really buy movies. If anything I watch much more digitally on my TV (Through my media server) than from a DVD or something.

I say 'nearly' because I had all but 2 episodes, but I seem to have a lot less since I started lending my brother tapes and one of them broke... but the answer is in a cupboard, all stacked up :P Seeing as there was 2 episodes to a tape.... buuuut, I got a lot of episodes on recorded VCR. I used to record them off Sky when they were on, and on Super Long Play you could fit 10 episodes on a tape. To be honest, though, when I have the chance I'm gonna buy it up on DVD :P Just to save a HELL of a lot of space. I edit for the [Tip.It Times]. I rarely write in [My Blog]. I am an [Ex-Moderator]. tripsis
I download most of my movies these days, and if I have the option, I always choose HD. Mr_Adam
I rarely buy videos unless I get them used or something (but I should get Netflix), or borrow from my friend. Of my 2 tvs, one is NEAR HD, but not HD, and the other is old HD (no LCD or anything) but the space it's in is godawful. I've watched Blu-Rays on it, but I can't compare it much to DVDs. Although, I'm sure if I thought about it I would notice. All I definitively notice now is that new Blu-Rays are like $40 :-|
Shazarabbit
I own 40 blu-rays as of the moment. But I stick to buying the big blockbuster movies, and buy everything else on normal DVD. Having said that, some shops here are starting to sell blu-rays cheaper than DVDS! If they keep going like that i'll just buy everything as a Blu-Ray. indy500fan
Blu-ray all the way. If you have a decent setup the difference between their quality and DVD is staggering. If the transfer is good you will notice a big difference in old movies as well, Casablanca looks beautiful on blu-ray. Your other example of animation is hit or miss, once again depending on source and transfer. Almost all movies are better on blu-ray though. I still do buy very, very occasionally a DVD if for some reason I really want it, it is cheap and the blu-ray isn't out yet.
Skeptical
I've never found the increase in quality enough to justify the increased expense. I've got a PS3, but I've never bothered buying a Blu-Ray movie. "Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security." das
Casablanca looks beautiful on blu-ray. But is the difference worth upgrading from say the standard Disk "Ultimate Collection 3 Disc" to the new Blu-Ray version? Where is the line drawn? Shiny
I don't have a blu-ray player... yet. We recently got a 42" Plasma, 1080p, and we need to really utilise it. With my home-theater system, i'm hoping I can slot my blu-ray player right in. However, I think I will need to buy a rather good palyer, with an ipod dock and a DVD port. Regarding DVDs vs Blu-Ray, seeing as when my big brother moved out, he took our families movie collection, minus the VHS. Funnily enough, I'm the only one in my group of friends who still has a video-player. I am in need of replacing the DVD collection, so I think I may as well do it in Blu-Ray. Either that or download 'em in HD. Hah.

RpgGamer
Blu-ray is kind of a waste of time to me. it's slightly more expensive, and I'm perfectly content watching TV in standard def. It's how I grew up, it's how I like my TV. slightly blurry. All these defined borders and lines hurt my eyes, I like a little fuzziness to ease into it. Also, flat screens bother me. I need a nice rounded screen, for maximum viewing angles. Quote Quote Anyone who likes tacos is incapable of logic. Anyone who likes logic is incapable of tacos.
