If it happened naturally then I wouldn't have much objection to older parents but with IVF I think you have to draw the line because older people might not be able to care for children properly.

Well once you hit late 30's/early 40's chances of having a child with some kind of defect increases...not to say that always happens.

 

I think before 50 is ok - 35 is only old if that's what you think. I'd want to be done having kids by that time.

 

I mean, my dad didn't have kids until he was in his later 30's and now he'll be retiring when my youngest brother is still in elementary school....

I don't have a problem with 40 year olds, but fifty-year olds I do. By the time the kid is 15, you're going to be 65. What medical problems could arise from 55 - 65, which could completely ruin your child's childhood? What medical conditions are going to keep you from taking your kid (male) skydiving, boating, doing sports (can you even tackle at 60, without breaking something, and play for more than 20 minutes?). I don't know what females would want to do, but there's probably some limitation there too.

 

To me it feels like once you hit 60, your life is going to start being limited by dying. There's people out there who are healthy 60 year olds, but they've exercised and ate correctly throughout their life. The kid just won't have a childhood to look at. Also depending on how his/her friends treat them for having parents in their 60s/70s, has also got to be a huge factor in their mentality.

 

At 35 - 39, it feels like you're at the edge, do it or most likely force an unhappy childhood on your child. But if you know you're going to be able to keep up with the kid, and not be limited by health, then I guess why not?

I don't see any real harm in it. It's far better to have a 50 year old woman having a baby and putting her experience to good use than a 16 year old with no parenting experience at all. I mean, sure it's slightly weird to have such a huge age gap, but it's ultimately fairly harmless. Having a child at 70 sounds incredible though, I just worry that the parents won't live long enough to see their children grow up.

 

I won't disagree about the teen mother thing, but it can be harmful to have a child at such an old age. Complications become more likely the older you get, and I'd imagine that it gets a lot harder on your body at 50. Of course, if the woman is prepared for the possibility of having to take care of a child with a disability, they are free to do what they want. If not, well, they're still free to do what they want

Heh, you people talking about how 35 is too old. I am 24 now and am only beginning to begin to think about kids as a serious proposition maybe one day in the far future. When you're mid twenties and know it will be years until you have a stable job and a home conducive to bringing up a child, then you won't think that 35 is too old any more. I can easily see how someone could get to 40, spending all of their time and energy on their career, and suddenly realise that perhaps it's time to have a kid.

 

I think it's easier for teens to think "Oh [cabbage], thats old".

I find it funny how old some of your parents were when they had you guys. Mine were younger than I am right now when they had me.

 

As for the topic, I think it goes both ways. Having a child too young will usually mean financial struggles, lack of experience, lack of maturity, etc. And having a child too old will usually mean lack of energy and you will most likely die before they get their life started. As long as you are personally ready to have a child, I see no problem.

I actually care a lot about how hot his mom is, personally.

I'll just say that this was back in the early 90s. I don't see her looking good back then from an objective standpoint. 80s hairstyles and such just seem weird.

Health risks are why. And the fact that a child isn't even going to be 30 by the time their mother has reached her expected lifespan limit.

Hmm I always though that if I was going to have a family, I'd want to start having them by say like 26-27 at the latest. Maybe 30. I always thought that'd I prefer to be younger, rather than older when I have my kids growing up. I guess that's because I grew up with younger parents.

having kids in their early 20s like the last few decades.

my mom had me when she was 41.. i was 18 days premature but hey i lived. a teacher that i had last year remarried when she was around 45 and had a kid at 46 and 47/8. she brought them to school once.. it seemed like both of them had something wrong with them.. one was definately mentally handicapped.

Hell no. Children born from teen mothers also have disability risks. The fertility rate grows at it's highest around 25 years

which most women conceive.

Bad stuff happens but do you not allow people to have a kid in their 50's? Say would you like it better if the government came and said any women who is pregnant at 50 has to have a forced abortion? No im sure 99% of people reading this would say thats wrong.

No because a stateless society should be leading government, so of course not abortions should be forced.

My mom's 58. I'm only 16. Sometimes I wish she had me when she was younger, so that she could be in my life a bit longer...
