Can pain affect sleep?

Featured Replies

Just wondering, cos its almost 6am and i havnt slept a wink in 2 days. Have got an extremely painful throat infection :/

can it?

Yes it can. If your in pain, it's hard to relax to fall asleep.

Yes I've had the very same happen to me. In fact, throat pain (is it where every time you swallow it feels like you're swallowing razor blades? I hate that....) is the only pain to keep me up.

Muscle and general body soreness makes me fall asleep right away.

I'll disagree since I tend to have no problems when I'm in hurt / sick.

The only time I have trouble sleeping is random :-?

I'd suggest taking some flu-like tablets; they tend to help throat pains and some make you drowsy.

kinda depends i mean when its like anoying sore like a cut in the top of your mouth or when i got braces agais ago then i find it hard to sleep.

but after like a hard days work/parties or when i busted my leg up i had no probs getting some shut eye.

Try some of those throat losenges, they work wonders for me whenever I have a throat infection or whatever.

i've had sleeping problems for the past 3 years, being in pain certainly stops me from sleeping and if in pain it will awaken me.

i injured my shoulder, and as a result i find it hard to sleep as i can't get a comfy position. plus i have had a bad cold for last 2 weeks, so thats been a pain too

It all depends.People with stuffy noses or breathing problems find it harder to sleep and its not real comftorble.Others with fevers or a flu may find it easier since the medicine they use helps them go to sleep. As for injuries,it is hard depending the way you sleep. When I used to wear braces,I was playing football and got kicked in the face.Braces got impaled into my lip and and it had to cut off and they injected it with some sort of relaxer, which I found hard to sleep with a big puffy lip

Thinking about things can make it harder to sleep and if you are constantly thinking about your throat or about feeling crappy and uncomfortable then its very likely to affect your sleep.

Meh @ sleeping pills. Remember that any medication designed to help with sleep has some risk of dependancy

Are you proud of your ignorance or something?

Yep, it can. When I severely spraigned my ankle, I couldn't sleep for two or so days. Very hard to relax.

There's a difference between an opinion and a [bleep]ing ignorant statement; the latter of which you expressed.

If you have not slept in two days or the majority part of two days I would suggest contacting a doctor for medication for your throat and to help you sleep.

Remember the body needs rest to heal... its alright to take a medication (under parental or medical supervision) that is designed to help you sleep... you will not become addicted from using it once or twice etc. it is those individuals that use it for longer periods of time that are subject to become dependant.

Good Luck getting some rest and I hope ya feel better soon.

Just out of interest, what kind of (non-medical) remedies have you tried? I'd say a large cup of warm milk with honey would help both to soothe your throat and to make you more drowsy, maybe you should give that a try :)

Warm milk FTW! :D Though i'm not too sure about the honey

When i had tonsilitis i gargled with paracetemol, that was the best thing i ever tried. Not sure if that would work though because the pain is in your throat :?

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

The only time I can't sleep is with throat infections which can bring back mild asthma which I used to have and then I just find it hard to breathe. Fortunetly I just use my sisters inhaler to stop it.

Everybody lovin' it, but ain't no body touchin' it

I work in a pharmacy in the UK. You can buy special tablets which numb the throat. They are used for very painful throats. I suggest trying some of those

And no lol why do you always want to get stuff from John Lewis. Its over ̣̉300 more then than what i paid.

John Lewis is a great, great shop.
