Leesters
Well, I just read the post about the guy losing 20 mil in a duel arena scam, and it makes me remember all the scam posts I've read on here, so I'm going to build a guide for the Archive of Wisdom sticky warning ppl about common scams. And your input will be appreciated, and credited in the guide. So please post any scams you are aware of that is not already list. Staking "Player Switch": This scam happens at Duel Arena. A low level person stakes a duel, and declines the final duel accept screen, stating lag, or oops, or mis click or something of the like. Then someone with a very similiar name, and a much higher level, offers the same duel, while the victim thinks they are dueling the lower level. "Three-Item" Wilderness Scam: This is a luring scam, where a player will lure a victim to the wild with valuable 3 items, and will offer you a gift of dragon longs, or mystic robe tops. With this gift, the whip is no longer in the "3-item" list, and a death by the victim will cause the whip to drop, and the gift items to keep. Trade Screen "Switch": This is a commono trade scam, where the trade items are "switched" at the last second before the final accept button is pressed. Common ones are switching big bones from Dragon bones, switching GP amounts, switching rock hammer for a granite maul, etc. It is always vitally important to double check the final trade screen on all trades. Trust Clan Scam: This scam starts by a player asking his victim if he wants to join a clan. In order to join the clan, you must show your "trust" and give him a valuable item. After the item is given, the scammer simply logs out. Password Scam: This scam is nasty. They player will tell you that your own password is blocked by the sensor, and then tells you to test it. You type in your password, and now its on the chat, and it IS NOT blocked by the sensor. You have just given your password away. Alt-F4 Scam: This is a way to get a player to log out. If you hit Alt-F4 your current window will close. (Please post related commands to close your Windows) Lame scams include "If you drop an item, and hit Alt-F4, you can dupe it". The person drops his item, hits Alt-F4, and he's out of the game, out of the website, and will probably take longer than 30 seconds to log back in. Free Tinted Armor Scam: This is when a player offers to "tint" your rune armor for free. Tinted armor comes from treasure trail clue scrolls, and players cannot tint armor. The victim hands over his rune items, and the scammer simply logs out. Pure Essense Scam: This is common at Runecrafting companies that trade essence for crafted runes, like at the Law Altar on World 66. The person will trade the victim non-pure essense in exchange for the law runes. Always make sure you are getting PURE essense if you are a crafter working at one of the company set ups. Can't think of anymore, but I'm sure you can. Please post any scam you can think of, and I'll add it to the list, and credit your name. Be careful out there! A circus in Runescape?? Oh my. REMEMBER RUNESCAPE KARMA! Be a nice player, and nice things will come back to you.I'm back, add me if you deleted me. :)
SirHartlar
Edgeville Scam: If you are making a trade in Edgeville I have seen this happen and heard about it. The scammer asks you to take him to the monastery to recharge prayer, while his friend waits in the wilderness to kill you. You can lose your stuff you were going to trade + more if you are not careful
r2-pleasent
Well, I've been playing F2P a lot lately and I find everyone there tries to pass their items off as Rare, or Discontinued. Popular items that are advertised as Rare are Muddy Keys on F2P, and Hollow Reeds on P2P. An easy way to avoid any scams of this fashion are to follow the Rare Item List: - Santa Hat - Pumpkin - Easter Egg - Green Halloween Mask - Blue Halloween Mask - Red Halloween Mask - Purple Party Hat - Yellow Party Hat - Green Party Hat - Red Party Hat - White Party Hat - Blue Party Hat - Christmas Cracker - Disk of Returning - Half-wine Another popular scam nowadays is Luring. People will offer a really good deal for your expensive item, and will tell you to meet them right near the Wild. They will begin moving into the Wild, and then open the trade screen. While you are in the screen, their friend pops up and begins attacking you, usually with Ancient Magic. I've known people who lost Party Hats to this trick, so I'd be very careful if someone tells you to meet them in Edgeville. The only other effective scam I've seen that's not on this list would be Unidentified Herbs. A friend of mine was selling a Blue Party Hat, and someone put up a ridiculous amount of Unid'ed herbs (like 20K) and said they were Ranarrs. My friend did the usual anti-scam maneuver, he bought 2 of them, identified one, and then held the other Unid'ed herb as a note in a full inventory. However, when he made the trade, he somehow ended up with 20K unid'ed Marentills. The basic moral of this is not to accept Unidentified Ranarrs in massive quantities. jwrm22
Trust Clan Scam: This scam starts by a player asking his victim if he wants to join a clan. In order to join the clan, you must show your "trust" and give him a valuable item. After the item is given, the scammer simply logs out. or go pk with your new clan and get killed by clan leader and some other clan members for only full rune... and more things like lure etc. I didn't want to put the "why" in the guide, because then it would have taught ppl how to do it. I'll add that one with your credit. A circus in Runescape?? Oh my. REMEMBER RUNESCAPE KARMA! spuriousmonkey
A very simple scam. A friend asks if he can hold your whip. And says: don't you trust me/I'm your friend. He is playing with your conscience. Just say that you don't loan out stuff out of principle and that it is not personal. Or at least, don't do this with anything you are NOT prepared to lose. edit: i guess it is close to the clan scam.
genju24
I actually thought I was scam proof, I've been a target of several of those simple tries, changing money ammount after first trade screen mainly. Once someone also tried to sell me willows instead of yews. I felt very safe because I read about most scams here on Tip.it forums (btw, thanks people). But yesterday they tried one on me I never read about. I was selling some runes on a forum and some guy says he'll buy. He asks me to go the range guild, says he's training there. I go ok, it's fairly close to a tele spot. I've never been in there before and go in without thinking twice. I see the guy waiting for me at the base of the center tower and he immediately goes up the stairs. I follow, not knowing anything about what happens there. Up there he trades me and immediately runs outside. I like to take things easy and I smell something fishy, so he doesn't get me. But after a few seconds of him being outside, I move outside too to trade, and immediately get attacked. I get downstairs just in time to survive. Now at this point I'm still not sure it's a scam, mind you. Yes, I am that naive. So I go back upstairs but stay inside safely. At this point a lvl 22 comes and starts saying that it's perfectly safe to go outside, IF I turn auto-retaliate ON. If I do, the archers will stop attacking me. At this point I pack up and leave, and the guy that first got me there either logs out or puts me on his ignore list. And that's my story. I didn't die because I was lucky enough to have auto-retaliate off. I would have lost 2k nats and the black cav I was wearing. Sorry for the long post, I've wanting to tell my whole story but didn't feel like it was worth a topic on it's own. I think you should add this scam to your guide. And great idea on the guide, definitely something everyone should read:) Current goals: Going for 80 80 80.Recent goals achieved: 70 70 70 done. Major Achievement: Fire Cape at 79 combat. LordSoultar
Old Fashioned Team Scam: Let's say that item X is worth 5m. Two friends, scammer A and scammer B, will be sitting in a crowded bank a ways apart from one another. Scammer A will be selling item X for 7m, which is 2m over it's actual value. Scammer B will be buying item X for 9m, which is 4m over the current value and 2m more than his friend is selling for. Some innocent person will come by and notice it, then realise that they could make an easy 2m in a matter of a few seconds by buying item X from Scammer A and selling it to Scammer B. He puts up the 5m, buys the item, and turns to sell the item to scammer B. When he does he finds that they both logged and he lost 2m. Random PM Team Scam: This one was pulled on me one day while I was trying to sell a guilded skirt from a treasure trail. I get a message from some random person saying "Hey, long time no see!" and nonsense like that. He asked me if I would buy a master wand for him while I was at Fally Park, and that he would trade me a halfwine for it. Then he says that they sell around the santa hat area. I go over and look, already knowing something was not right, and sure enough thereis someone selling the master wand for 30m more than it is worth. I tell him I know what he is trying to do, and he blocks me.

Silverchipmunk
The "make you a member for free scam". Simply, a person says that if you give them your password, they will make you a member. They might also offer items or gp. Another version is to say someone did this for you and give them the username of the person who can "make you a member". Rebdragon
And of course, the "My Dad/Uncle/Whatever works at Jagex and will give you free stuff if you give me your pass. I remember when I was at the Yew trees a few months back some lose was saying that his uncle was Svulle to some newbs, and that all they had to do was give him their pass and he'd give them a chain and whatnot. O_Qp
I don't think this is a common scam, but I've heard about it: Someone wants to buy your edible rare (Pumpkin, Easter Egg, Half Wine). When you get to the trade screen, the scammer quickly closes the chat window, making you eat/drink your rare if it's not noted. 228/228 Qp

kwimbob
On the free "tinted" armor I'd go ahead and say "tint" or "trim" your armor for you. You can also get rid of some of the extra typo size closing tags  Combat 116+; Total 1900+; All Hard Tasks; (Nearly) All quest points; (Nearly) All skills 60+; An aquatic moose ninja.Currently: Using 63 hunter to get some of those "Chins", then I'm going to range stuff down. Interruptions of agility when I feel like it, as well. And lucky enough to get 4 Dragon and 6 Barrow Drops.[hide]Kwimbob now looks exactly like me in real life except for hair color. Yes, this means I look exactly like the protagonist of that certain anime that my second character, Faye_V is also named after. Yes, I bought a jacket that also looks like his. No in real life I don't have a slain bear to sling over my shoulders. Yes, I'm that skinny even if I no-life it for years in basements. No, I can't shoot a gun. Yes, I can win any other strategic video game you have never played - because I probably have, ahahaha. And yes, I also have brown eyes, yet one of my eyes looks different from the other. And yes, I'm completely oblivious to the [real] world around me as I constantly engineer new solutions to daily problems in my head. When I get hungry, all that isn't food can wait. When I'm sleepy - nothing is of any priority in front of sleep. But at any other time, I never slow down. Never give up. Never Surrender. Pathetic people, actually think I will fall for it. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
