I dont think that a good answer. Its compleatly possible to colonize the moon very soon, but the moon colony would still be dependant on the earth, since no rescources we need are there.

That's what I figured; I wonder what parameters he's using for his predictions. Maybe global peace and harmony, everyone working together for the common good... If it's left up to just one country or people group, I think it'll take much longer, and maybe never happen.

I really doubt that we are going to be able to start colonizing in the next 20-40 years. When we land on Mars, we first have to build a atmosphere to make it suitable for life and thats going to take a while.

Look how far technology has come since 1980 and I don't mean commercial side, the proper technological experiments that some nations and companies are doing must be outstanding.

I think it would take us much much longer to colonize another planet.

I wonder what he means by a base and colony - especially colony. Because there's no way in 40 years we find a way to heat up Mars and make the atmosphere livable for humans (same for moon as well, I guess). So what are we talking about? Building a building there that is similar to our spacesuits so that astranauts can stay up there longer? Would a colony just be a building stocked with lots and lots of food so people stay there for virtually forever?

I think he's right... we CAN go to the moon again and mars for the first time in around 40 years. The real question is if we will WANT to go there.

 

 

 

Let's look at the current issues facing the world. Terrorism, the U.S. is preoccupied with a million and a half things, and there's proverty and homelessness on every corner. Unless there's a large shift in the state of the world, I don't think we'll be going anywhere other than Vegas any time soon.

 

 

 

In the 1960's, the space race was a central issue to world leaders. Now, it's playing fifth fiddle to the problems here on earth. Let the debate begin as to whether or not this is good or bad...

If people could just act like relatively sane human beings, we could do it. The big problem is definitely terrorism, though. As long as everyone's running around our world trying to find people, they won't have time to be running around another world trying to find people :wink:

I believe we shouldn't travel to other worlds until we solve our problems down here first. These include: Famime, Limited supply of water, poor people (the ones in Centeral America, Asia, Africa) etc. Might take a while but I hate for the US to colonize by itself. Thinking the world should be changed to "United States of America"

All we need inorder to colinise anouther planet are robots that can both build structures and repare themselves remotly, we can do both today. I think we should build atleast a small lunar base on the moon in the next few years, the lower gravity will mean we can transport materials much easier than from the Earth.

I can see getting a bit bored of earth after 20 or so years. I'd consider going up there. :D

the moon has gravity. its like 60% of the earths or something like that. when you are in space between the moon and the earth there is a very weak gravitational pull, so it seems to be no gravity.

Exactly. We could get there to Mars in the predicted time but we won't. Why? It simply isn't important to the powers-that-be.

Technology has been growing more in the last 50 years than in the entire history of Earth before 1950. At the rate we are going, I believe it may be possible to begin colonization on the moon and mars. I think it may take a little longer than 20 - 40 years but it will come soon enough.

There's no point in going to the moon. Maybe mars, not the moon. If this so called increasing risk (where the hell did this come from? how can it be increasing? does he have knowledge of a world-ending astroid headed at us and he isn't telling?) it would destroy the moon too, or cut off supplies. To make a permanent base on mars, you need to make like life there. This isn't Spore. You can't just get life where you want it. And you need to think about how to get a massive colony there. When we've never actually been there. I'm thinking +100 years to have a place that isn't limited to astronauts.
