Bmw
SEOUL, South Korea North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test. The country's official Korean Central News Agency said the test was performed and that there had been no radioactive leakage from the site. "The nuclear test is a historic event that brought happiness to the our military and people," KCNA said. "The nuclear test will contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and surrounding region." South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has convened a meeting of security advisers over the issue, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, and intelligence over the test has been exchanged between concerned countries. The North said last week it would conduct a test, sparking regional concern and frantic diplomatic efforts aimed at dissuading Pyongyang from such a move. North Korea has long claimed to have nuclear weapons, but had never before performed a known test to prove its arsenal. Wow, could it be true? It's breaking news I saw while browsing CNN within the last hour. It's unconfirmed by anyone besides the DPRK officials, so we'll have to wait and see. I honestly believed that North Korea, as usual, was bluffing on their nuke test threat. What could this mean for the world, coping with a nuclear North Korea? Will Japan begin to mobilize in the near future as a result? Discuss! North Korea says it performed its first-ever nuclear test North Korea Confirms Nuclear Test North Korea in Nuclear Test Claim

Giordano
Your point? The US did hundreds on nuclear tests during the Cold War. No one bothered them. bjbj1991
North Korea today, Iran tomarrow. Just wait till the draft starts. PS; Why does everyone freak out when they hear of a nuke? It's only when a country has hundreds of them that people should get scared like in the Cold War.

Barihawk
Your point? The US did hundreds on nuclear tests during the Cold War. No one bothered them. Until the numerous SALT treaties and banning of nuclear tests. We have not had a nuclear test SINCE the Cold War. North Korea was one of the original SALT nations and this test is very dangerous. It would probably be a Japanese or South Korean operation to destory the nukes, but bet your best nickel the US will support either. Zonorhc
China isn't going to be happy about this. Put it this way: in the international playground, Pyongyang is like Beijing's [developmentally delayed]ed little brother who shows off like a prat and picks fights with Beijing's friends while it's having lunch with them. Honest1
One less country American is going to try and push around. Good stuff. I find that a tad bit insulting. Ok mabey we have a crazy government, but most people in the United States could give a crap less what the other counties are doing. Most of us just wanna live our own lives away from all that outside drama. Mabey to rephrase One Less person for the government to push around, but our govermnent specifically our president has lost support of last I heard over 60% of the country. 99 Fishing 11/12/2006 790th fisher to 99Former Tip.it Events team leader
jak722
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale A 1 kiloton bomb makes only 4.0 on the richter scale and thats pretty much the lowest yeild you can get... (edit: okay what I said was not exactly accurate since one of the smallest nukes ever create, the US Davy Crocket, had a yeild of 10-20 tons -- but still, North Korea would have aimed for a better yeild for sure. Having such a low yeild isnt exactly a strategic deterrent... this looks more tactical...) North Korea said they were hoping for at least 400 kilotons... Heck, if you piled up 1000 tons of conventional TNT, you could get the same result as a 1 kiloton bomb... Its a bad bluff. :shame: The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. Militaris
This should be the perfect time for the Bush administration to get same guts and take out Kim Jong-il, might as well do Ayatollah Ali Khamenei while they are at it. Any protesters should just be given a free ride to North Korea and left there.

Even if he is as nutty as Kim, running him out of office would lead to a HUGE problem with the Islam world. Remember that he is the center of extreme Islam in the entire middle east. We might get retribution that would make 9/11 look like an ice cream social (possible nuclear...). jak722
China isnt that crazy. They're worried about this just as much as Japan and South Korea... Plus this is just a "test" so they don't have piles of it yet. (Probably) If this ever erupts into WW3, it would be everybody else against NK. China would most likely remain neutral. Also it would be interesting to see how Iran would react to the world's reaction towards NK. Would they continue? or back down? :-k The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. Zonorhc
China isnt that crazy. They're worried about this just as much as Japan and South Korea... That's what I was saying. China gets annoyed every time North Korea decides to rattle its sabres, because its rapid industrialisation relies on regional stability, since it imports a lot of its fuel and raw materials. They didn't like it when Pyongyang fired missiles over in Japan's direction, and you can bet they won't like it when Kim Jong Il brings the wrath of the US down on the region again. China's economy relies on trade far too much to want the region destabilised by North Korea being stupider than usual. Good stuff. Atleast if America controls the world and pushes around countries that are places of refuge for terrorist/countries with evil dictators (Iran, North Korea, Iraq) than the world wont be in Nuclear War and in mass trouble with all out war.
