Can we LIE in Runescape?

Featured Replies

Seems to be more and more reports of people being banned by "confessing" to a crime. This creates a problem and brings up an interesting point of debate: Are we allowed to lie?

Example, some idjit is pm'ing me claiming that I hacked his account. Now, instead of ignoring him I go into sarcasm mode:

Idjit-Xtreme: Yes, you hacked my account cause I lured you.

Nuke-Marine: Yeah, I hacked your account

**Idjit reports at this moment**

Nuke-Marine: I somehow figured out who you were in real life, walked to your house,

Nuke-Marine: got on your computer and installed a keylog

Nuke-Marine: then to get your bank pin, hid a mini-camera behind your seat.

Nuke-Marine: MORON! You have to download a keylogger or tell your friends your pass to get hacked.

Nuke-Marine: guys you lure can't do it since they don't know you in RL.

Now, I was being sarcastic as the last part shows. However, if Jagex saw only the first part in a snap shot, I could have been in trouble. But Jagex apparently is banning people that lie or be sarcastic. Seeing that the ENTIRE GAME has you pretending to be a fantasy character, then you're allowed to lie and be sarcastic.

Is Jagex using self-confessions that may be out of context to ban people? If that's the case, should they make it PLAIN AND CLEAR that lying about activity even in jest or sarcasm can get you in trouble.

Jagex does not have a sarcasm detector. You can lie, but do not pretend to break the rules or something.

I guess not being sarcastic is a small price to pay to keep your acc though. :?

Quit. PM me if you play The Conduit to exchange friend codes.

hmm, if i say anything sarcastic, i make sure to end the sarcasm in the same message it started in..

they cant really do anything about it then..

ya just gotta be carefull... allthough they do say clearly in the rules that doing what you described WILL get you into trouble....

Stop thinking. It's Runescape.

I've heard loads of people get banned for being sarcastic. :?

In the future for sarcasm, pure a [/sarcasm] or something to point out it's a sarcastic remark. If you get banned, tell Jagex what you said in the end. They'll probably understand. I think they not only take a snapshot of one minute before, but also one minute after, but I'm not sure.

You're allowed to lie, it just depends on the context. I mean in real life it's not against the law to lie in some cases, but some cases it is. If someone catches you on tape confessing to a crime, that could be used as evidence. It's just up to the courts to determine if the evidence is valid. With jagex, it's up to them to tell if you were being sarcastic or not when referring to breaking a rule. From what I've seen with ban cases, they don't acknowledge sarcasm often, like you said. So I'd go back to my initial statement: It depends on the case. Assume you're always being tape recorded, and whatever you say goes to an incompetent judge.

90% of people lie in runescape, rl and online are two different things

As stated, Jagex does not have a sarcasm detector. (For all you American people), when you go in to an airport terminal and shout, "I have a bomb! Look at me, I'm gonna blow up the plane!" you'll get arrested. Whether or not you were kidding or not, you'll get arrested, because the police (*cough Jagex cough*) can never be too careful.

If you're replying to what I said, learn to read. I never said they were the same. It's called analogy.

Exactly. And you'd get arrested in England too, not just the United States. And other countries too. -.-

  • Never trust anyone. You are always alone, and betrayal is inevitable.
  • Nothing is safe from the jaws of the decompiler.

Well, I just know the American side of it, since I was around to experience 9/11 and I travel quite a lot.

I think losing your account is a small price to pay to keep being sarcastic.

Anyway, if the last part with you admitting to being sarcastic was in the evidence of the report, you could point that out to them and maybe get it appealed, but I doubt it.

Supermonk, proving you wrong since 1992.

Supermonk rocks, I want to have his children.

Music is like candy. You always get rid of the rapper.

A friend of mine got perm banned for saying he bought his phat on ebay. He told this to some noob who wouldnt stop asking him "how do you make money???"

So, in my opinion- just dont say stuff like that, theres no reason to.

Are you asking in theoretical terms or practical terms?

Theoretically, yes, you can be banned for anything or nothing. But you already know that.

Practically though, there's no way you'll be banned for that. There's maybe a 1% chance that the report will be seen by anyone (unless it was a p-mod doing the reporting, which I doubt), and if anyone sees it, there's maybe a 5% chance they'll be some humorless scrooge who doesn't recognize irony.

So let's see:

.01 x .05 = .0005, or 1/20th of one percent chance you'd get banned.

Don't worry about it.

There are 10 types of people in the world:

* Those who understand binary

* Those who don't

i wasnt replying to you, i was replying to the title -.-

hmmm interesting..

well religious people shouldn't lie but i'm not sure that lying is right if you are religious or not so it shouldn't happen.

i'm sure though people are allowed little white lies but just to be safe make sure the person you are talking to knows it is sarcasm otherwise you could get into a stick situation as you described.

Runescape probably doesn't know whether its a lie or not until it's too late
