Basically the chance of a black hole destroying the Earth in this manner is 0%. Even if the black hole did suck up the Earth, it's gravity would be exactly the same; the moon will still orbit the black hole-Earth and in turn orbits around the sun. All a black hole really does is compact matter to a tiny size.

I don't think people are as worried about destroying the Earth as they are of destroying all the life on Earth.

Ever since I read Angels and Demons, I knew CERN would be the first to do something extraordinary.

Oh ya, that Dan Brown... he knows his stuff.

at least something came out of his books...

i also read somewhere that they are making another one close to 50km in length..

personally, getting sucked into a black hole would be sweet... that would be a cool way to die..

That's the way I look at it. Instead of dying from cancer or in a car wreck, I died by being sucked into a black hole along with the rest of the world. Awesome.

If they didn't know what they were doing, they wouldn't present a figure.

I see you have a lot to learn about politics and statistics yet. :D

Oh I'm sure that they think that the chance is rather small, just as I'm sure that they can't give an actual estimate for how small it really is, considering they have no clue what may happen at all.

In the end it either goes wrong or not anyway. ;)

Ok, I'm going to leave you with the last laugh on this issue. Explain to me the political motivations to come up with such a statistic.

Atheism is going to destroy the world
The only way atheism specifically would destroy the world is that if there really IS a god and whatever deity is the right one decides to smite everyone for being non-belivers.

And if there is, fair call. I mean, if I went out on a limb to create life, do a smeg load of work, and then some punk doesn't believe in me, I'd raise hell!

The life time of a black hole is proportional to its mass. This would mean that heavy black holes live for an extremely long time and black holes made in a particle accelerator would evaporate almost instantaneously.

I should print out a copy of this article and use it to help convince girls to sleep with me on the off-chance that the world will end.

Can't say that the girlfriend would be too happy with that, though...

Printing.

1/1,000,000,000,000,000,000...something like that

how do they know their calculations are right? they are they going to make something that has a 'chance' of destroying the planet..

Every nuclear bomb ever detonated had the minute possibility of destroying the planet.

I wouldn't mind. If it's everybody at a time, of course. We'll live in heaven and everything would be better.

Hm. I believe the earth will end when Jesus comes back...don't believe me? Read the book of Revelation.

laugh as you may..but this is what I believe

*Sigh*

Prove the book of Revalation is true.

But do it in a different topic, because this has nothing to do with religion.

And FYI, the Bible says nothing about the "Earth" ending. It'll still be here.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

I really hate to interrupt your incessant bashing of my faith, but metaphorically speaking:

How does one prove Apocalypse when it has not happened yet? That's like asking me to prove that something random is going to happen next Tuesday.

And I must say "good form" to the last comment, since the Earth will go on after the Tribulation.

I'm not bashing your faith, I'm questioning it.

Templar - Why would I not "know"? Because I'm not a follower I'm not entitled to realize that the world is full of evil and the Bible says it will be cleansed? The point is you can't prove that anything the Bible SAYS is going to happen actually WILL happen. The Earth isn't going to end when Jesus plops down from the sky, 'kay? You SERIOUSLY need to read the Bible if even a non-follower knows more than you about it. Talk about BLIND faith.

They developped the internet. Isn't that a bit extraordinary too?
