What kind of forum do you use?

The Observer

Recommended Posts

Well, there are many different forum packages out their that appeal to many different clans. For example: Invisionfree, Proboards, PHPBB, etc. What I'm asking is, what kind of forum package does your clan use? Why does that type of forum package appeal to your clan? Would you rather use another one for your clan?

IPBFree - the best out there IMO (although admittedly I havn't tried SMF yet). Has everything you need, and I'm looking forward to the next update in a couple of months time.

Invisionfree, couldn't imagine switching.

We currently use Zetaboards (pretty much IF2.0). Mainly because, of course, it is free, and with the re-work it's like a whole different forum system. Invisionfree was pretty much just a free version of Invision PowerBoards, but they made Zetaboards themseleves so it takes a lot of good features from multiple boards and brings 'em into one. ::'

In the past 2-3 years I have made about 10-15 different forums. The first 2 were Forumer forums :wall:. After that I did a few at some random sites... they were all terrible. Them I finally decided to go to Invisionfree Dun dun duaaa. I made 1 forum on Invisionfree... it was so awful...I could rant for pages and pages about how bad it was. Then I found Ipbfree, There is no going back now I love it so much.

Ipbfree all the way!

Psst... the new one we are thinking of switching to is ipbfree, even though now we've abandoned that option. I do prefer ipbfree though because of the fact that screwing up a skin code or switching something around can easily be changed again :) .

Though we still use invizionfree..

Zetaboards is an "upgrade" to InvisionFree, I don't use either one at this point in time though so I can't comment further than that. The clans I've been in are split pretty evenly between IF and IPB - from being an admin of several of those IF boards I can say that while they're pretty simple and straightforward to administer even for those who aren't ultra-tech-savvy, IPB definitely has a myriad of security features and whatnot that are quite nice. I was figuratively born & raised on IF boards, though, so I am still partial to them. <3:

Zetaboards' Administration Control Panel sorts everything out very nicely, neatly. It's easy to find stuff, and you can do a lot with the layout, make it your own. Though we have yet to make use of some of the features to their full extent (like Administration Assistants) it's good to know that they thought those things out, and gave us the options. Personal favorites include the Joinable Groups feature... decent alternative to creating forum ranks for each different sub-group.

My experience with InvisionFree was nice, but each clan site I went to; the skins were pretty much the same, but with different colors... Zetaboards is a nice change from that (or at least Instinct's forum is).

It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and the darkness, nothing more.

The true master of Death does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that he must die,

and understands there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying.

To the well organized mind death is but the next great adventure.

And now, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

lol... My clan uses a free forum that's supported by FreeWebs, I host the clan site there so it made sense just to have their tiny forums added to my site. I don't have many people in my clan so they don't see much use.

Clans using costly forums better have some wealthy leaders :P The free ones aren't that behind the pay-to-use forum software. Those kinds of forums are reserved for huge communities that require a lot of bandwidth.

A very big mistake on the folks at Invisionfree/Zetaboards fault is that it APPEARS to be just an "upgrade" but it really is a lot more than that. Invisionfree was basically a free way to get an already existing Forum software (Invision Power Boards v1.3 - just for reference, Invision Power Boards is now on v2.3 and v3.0 is slated to come out later this year). Because of this, they couldn't really UPDATE it... at all. Invisionfree (IF) was started in 2002, and I happened upon it in 2004 and having been using one board or another hosted by it since then. (I guess you could say I was born & raised on them, too ::' ). Anyways, virtually NO new features/upgrades had been added to IF since it started in 2002.

Zetaboards on the other hand, was written and coded BY the people at Invisionfree/Zetaboards. Because of this, they have the ability to add many new features, updates, etc. to the forum systems over the years. What it all boils down to is: if you're currently using IF, I HIGHLY suggest switching over to Zetaboards, if not now, sometime in the future.

I use Forumotion to host my clan's forum, very customizable and so far I have no complaints - www.forumotion.com

What I specifically like about it is that it offers an option of changing your forum address whenever you want so if you get tired of one name in URL, you change it and tell your members to update their bookmarks.
