I understand that RuneScape doesn't advertise in traditional methods such as television, billboards, or online flash ads (to my knowledge).

I also know that a lot of you old time 'scapers will remember when the floodgates were let open, and the miniclippers piled in. I remember reading many rants about this - believe it or not, I started out as a miniclipper.

 

Back on to the point, and the discussion I'd like to start -

Miniclip has changed the logo of Runescape, and has featured it at the head of the category for 3D- games. Its unclear if this was auto generated based on games I played at miniclip recently, or if they really are featuring it prominently again. To be honest, I'm not even sure how much traffic miniclip receives any more or generates for Jagex.

-Do you think this will start a flood of new players?

-What do you think is Jagex's relationship with miniclip, even though it has funorb?

We NEED a flood of new players. Nowadays I find Lumbridge in F2P worlds rather empty, or just full of PKer accounts killing cows with rune scimmies. The number of players online at any one time has been dipping. No doubt a good proportion of the younger players would be immature, but then again I'm not impressed with old players flaunting their 'experience' either.

I don't think it would have any new affects on the game since it happened before. I hardly doubt that any new wave of players that come through miniclip would be as noticeable as it was before because back when it first happened Runescape's general population was much small. Its like a premiere of a new movie, opening weekend is going to generate the most profit. Each following week is typically never going to be as strong as the opening weekend. I hope my metaphor was clear. :unsure:

Miniclip again? Ugh. So much for RS ever losing it's childish stereotype. I don't understand why Jagex doesn't resort to other types of advertisement. The lower aged audience cannot generate the type of long-term income that the older audience can.

 

When this happened sometime in 2004-2005... I ended up quitting because the game's in-game community just became too immature (not to mentioned botted) in general. The stereotype really got to me then. Hopefully this does not happen again. :( (Probably will not since I rarely have to interact with "strangers" thanks to the GE)

I don't really think this will have too big of an effect on the current community. To be honest alot of the younger players in my eyes tend to be more mature then some of the so called "veterans" of this game to begin with.

Some new faces would do the game some good in the long run.

I see just as much immaturity these days as I did then. Just a different brand of immaturity. Instead of a bunch of childish newbies we have a bunch of higher level players spouting 4CHAN esque garbage, engaging in e-thuggery, and generally just being a bunch of egocentric [bleep]s. Of course not all players are like that but really at this point I think that shouldn't need to be said, but I know if I didn't someone would be a smartass and call me out on it.

Runescape badly needs an influx of new players, we have not got anywhere near to reaching record players online since before the trade updates (which lets face it killed runescape for alot of people).

Yes, the 1st gen of Miniclippers have grown up, to become that brand you speak of. :P (That was sarcasm - before I offend anybody here)

 

It's just that first time... the worst years of RuneScape followed (2006-2007). Those years forced Jagex to make all those unwanted changes (removal of trade limit, wilderness, and etc). Updates which changed the game forever... I can't really say the first influx from Miniclip was the reason... but if there's a scapegoat for all that, Miniclip it is.

 

(I realize all this would have probably happened with or without Miniclip, so whatever is best for RS, I'm okay with!)

I beg to differ, I've seen a commercial on dutch television from runescape :P

 

Well i'll really be glad if there will be an influx of new players (finally!). Whenever i see low level accounts i usually ask if it's their first account (I asked someone just 3 days ago), they *always* have mains, this really saddens me as it seems the player base has been the same for years now. Past polls here on tip.it show this as well btw (source)

I would love it if there was a massive influx of RSers again. RS just seems too empty atm. :(

I agree that the beginners market is getting very thin at the moment in Runescape. It may be because i have finished school and cannot see players spreading word of the game or whether it just does not happen any more, but I have seen a decline in the number of first time players.

If anything, an influx of new players will just cause raw materials to drop in price, which I'm all for. I can handle some immature players if training becomes cheaper.

I began with miniclip as well, don't really see any big change.

It could be positive or it could be negative. Lets see how this plays out :P

I personally welcome a fresh batch of new players, even if it is from the so called "childish" Miniclip. It will be a breath of fresh air to see some newbies running around instead of the average player we have these days. I look forward to seeing its full effect. :)

I prefer genuine newbiness to the immaturity of those people who started playing in the classic era, considering they are more deserving because of that.

Always having the same people is boring.

You must see that Jagex is a company and having their game listed on one of the biggest flash game sites on the internet is a primary source of interest in their game. They need some way to advertise, and let's not be to harsh as you don't see their ads all over the internet and on naughty sites like some other games. All in all if you were head of Jagex, wouldn't you do the same thing? you need a steady influx of interest into your game to recover and add on from players that are lost. Now I don't agree with all the immature players finding the game but hey we all start somewhere.

In today's gaming industry, kids are expecting very flashy graphics in their games and even though RS released the "High Detail" version which is nice (compared to the old version), it just can't complete with newer games that are being released. People usually clump RS into the same category as WoW, which one do you think kids are going to want to spend their money on for a membership?

 

It also doesn't help that people bash on Runescape all the time, saying that if you play it, you're a [insert derogatory word of your choice]. For teen boys, this is very off-putting, to think that they will be thought of as [insert that word again] if they play this game.

 

It would seem that Jagex doesn't want to put too much money towards advertising (though, while I was in The Netherlands in February, I saw the commercial).

I wouldn't mind if more people started playing Runescape. The more the merrier I suppose.

While no doubt some immaturity will ensue, I'm still excited to see new people :)
